In addition, Spanish vowels do not change sound when they combine with another vowel. Regardless, writing “e” in place of “i”, or vice versa, is an extremely common error among students, especially those who have never studied Spanish in school. Fortunately, due to the simple relationship between letter and sound, the error is easy to correct. A always sounds like “ah”. Example: casa, caja, mala E always sounds like “eh”. Example: gente, mente, leer. I always sounds like “ee” in “meet”. Example: fin, sin, mil O always sounds like “oh”. Example: color, olor, honor. U always sounds like “ou” in “soup”. Example: luz, cuscús, tutú

Learning Outcomes: You will have

Know the Spanish vowels (vocales) and how they are pronounced

Section 1: Form

Spanish contains 5 vowels:

A, E, I, O, U.

In English vowels may have more than one sound depending on the word they are in, but in Spanish, each

vowel is pronounced only in one way, and no two vowels are pronounced the same. In addition, Spanish

vowels do not change sound when they combine with another vowel. In English, “e” alone in a word like “beg”

sounds different from “e” together with “a” in a word like “meat.” In Spanish, two vowels together will each

keep their own sound, as in “viejo,” which sounds like /vee-AY-ho/.

Regardless, writing “e” in place of “i”, or vice versa, is an extremely common error among students, especially

those who have never studied Spanish in school. Fortunately, due to the simple relationship between letter

and sound, the error is easy to correct.

A always sounds like “ah”. Example: casa, caja, mala E always sounds like “eh”. Example: gente, mente, leer. I always sounds like “ee” in “meet”. Example: fin, sin, mil O always sounds like “oh”. Example: color, olor, honor. U always sounds like “ou” in “soup”. Example: luz, cuscús, tutú
