Welcome toHighlandArchaeology Festival 2018

Fàilte gu Fèis Arc-eòlais naGàidhealtachd2018I ampleased to introduce the programme for this year’s Highland Archaeology Festival

which showcases all of Highland’s historic environment fromburied archaeological

remains to canals, cathedrals andmore. The popularity of our annual Highland

Archaeology Festival goes on from strength to strength. We aim to celebrate our

shared history, heritage and archaeology and showcase the incredible heritage on

our doorsteps aswell as the importance of protecting this for future generations. The

educational and economic benefits that this can bring to communities cannot be

overstated.

New research is being carried out daily by both local groups and universities aswell as

in advance of construction. Highland Council is committed to letting everyone have

access to the results of this work, either through our Historic Environment Record (HER)

website or through our programmeof events for the festival. Our keynote talks this

year provide a great illustration of the significance of Highland research to thewider,

national picture. These lectures, held at the council chamber in Inverness, will cover the

prehistoric period, the earlymedieval and the industrial archaeology ofmore recent

times. Our conference continues this themewith a look at how far we have come over

the past 25 years since the festival began.

For thosewho like a challengewe have an extended geocache trail and a photographic

competition and for thosewhowant to get stuck in further, there is awhole afternoon

of fascinatingworkshops.

I would like to thank all our event organisers for their time, imagination and effort as

the festival would not be possiblewithout them.

I wish you all a very successful and enjoyable festival.

Chair of the Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee

HAFGeocachingTrailGeocaching is a popular hobby where people

find hidden caches, armed only with grid

references. We’ve hidden a number of HAF

geocaches this year throughout the Highlands,

and have signposted people towards others

hidden near archaeological and historical sites.

To find out more, see the HAF GeocachingTrail

Archaeology does not belong toarchaeologists; it belongs to all of us.

Public archaeology should balance the twin aims offree and open participation for all, and sound researchquestions.

We work with communities and groups to help themdiscover our shared heritage through thedevelopment and delivery of innovative, ethical andexciting heritage projects that have public engagementat their very core.

We offer support and mentoring in the areas ofproject development and project management andcan advise on often complex funding processes. Wehave delivered community archaeology projectsacross the UK, from Sutherland to Sussex, investigating everything from prehistoric burialmonuments to post-medieval cornmills. Ourparticipants have included toddlers and octogenarians, and everyone in between!

Drawing on our extensive range of in-house skills, your public archaeology project could include:excavation; survey; geophysics; schools involvement;post-excavation and specialist training workshops;talks; laser scanning and LiDAR; museum displays andinterpretation; web design; and printed media.

Whether you want to initiate a new communityarchaeology excavation, run an education initiative, design a new community museum display or create anambitious heritage landscape study, we can supportyou by providing innovative, ethical, sustainable andpractical solutions to heritage development.
