Dear Readers,Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of 2012. As I write this, Christmas is still two weeks away but I think it’s fairly safe to say that my New Year will start with a) a bigger waistline, b) a smaller bank balance, and c)

a huge list of New Year’s resolutions!

It’s a time to reflect and plan for the year ahead and we have some great articles to help you on your way. Our book review this month is all about self-help and there are some fab titles to inspire you. If the late nights and festive partying have taken their toll we also have some excellent beauty tips plus some useful advice on how to sleep better... that’s if you’re not sleeping like a baby (from exhaustion!).

New Year plans often involve home improvements and security should also be high on your list - read our article on page 16 to find out more.

Whatever your resolutions are, Red Fox Publishing wish you a very healthy and happy 2012!

When decorating a child’s bedroom, remember the three Fs: fun, function and flexibility. Children need stimulation – though too much brightly coloured plastic will make your eyes ache – and organisation, so that you can occasionally see the floor. But it’s flexibility that’s the most important. Unless you really want to redecorate every couple of years, keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral, just changing the accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers, bean bags, blinds and lampshades, as necessary. That way you’ll be able to create a room that will last right through from babyhood until your little darling leaves home.

NurseriesThe younger the child, the more ‘stuff’ they seem to have, and for a newborn storage is all-important. You could buy a

set of free-standing shelves (if the shelves can be raised and lowered when necessary, so much the better) or fix some ‘floating’ shelves to the walls. Better still, if you have a period house with alcoves either side of a chimney breast, consider turning them into conceal-all built-in wardrobes. Most baby toys can be stored in colourful, soft plastic buckets, or in drawstring bags hung from the back of the door or a peg rail. Avoid buying furniture that’s very baby-specific – he or she won’t notice it and it will date very quickly. Instead, choose well-made, simple pieces that will still be useable (even if they have to be given a lick of paint) in decades to come. Arrange the room to suit you – middle-of-the-night visits are even less fun when you stub your toe on a sticking-out chair, and instant access to the cot/bed, storage and toys will make your life easier.

As for décor, choose soft colours and ensure your lighting isn’t too glarey. Fitting a dimmer is a great idea – usually a quick and inexpensive job for a qualified electrician.

Older childrenThe storage theme continues as your children grow older, so increase the options (and avoid spending a fortune) by thinking laterally and visiting junk-shops for chests of drawers, blanket boxes and the like. Make sure they’re stable and don’t have any splinters; then simply sand and paint, changing any knobs and handles if necessary. For storage of small toys, felt tip pens and so on, use washed-up tins (no sharp edges, mind), ice cream tubs or shoe boxes, perhaps covered in offcuts of wallpaper for a unified look. Now’s the time to consider a raised sleeper bed – children of this age need plenty of space in

Decorating a child’s bedroom is all about flexibility – and with a bit of flair it’s easy to create a space that’s as practical as it is imaginative, and that doesn’t cost the earth

which to play. Keep furniture to the edges of the room, so there’s plenty of clear floor area in the middle. And for decorative interest, how about fixing a large magnetic board to one wall, or painting a wall or a cupboard door with blackboard paint? Wall stickers are great fun, or you could hang artists’s canvas painted in bright blocks of colour, or else camouflage nets, bunting, maps or flags. String fairy lights across the ceiling, or glue lightweight plastic toys in formation across it; on wooden floorboards, meanwhile, it wouldn’t be hard to paint paw prints, a race track or a giant game of snakes and ladders.

TeenagersTeenagers’ rooms need to be a combination of cosy den, chill-out zone and study area. You’ll need to provide zones for homework and hobbies, socialising and sleepovers – and good lighting in each area is essential. As well as general, overhead lighting,

desk and bedside lamps, consider adding something decorative such as a colour-changing LED light or a ‘starlit’ ceiling using fibre optics. Just like anyone working from home, teenagers need a good quality swivel chair, a spacious desk, plenty of plug sockets, an internet connection and storage space for books, files and so on. This could be in the form of built-in shelving or standalone units that can be taken with you

when you move. As for relaxing, a sofa, some bean bags or even a storage ottoman will come in handy. A well-lit dressing table (this could double up with the desk) is important, too, as is a good mirror. If you want your teenager to be organised, add a pin board or magnetic board on the wall, an accessible laundry bin and some open-topped storage for all those bits and pieces that you’d prefer not to end up on the floor.

Review

Feel the Fear And Do It Anyway. Susan Jeffers

They say a life lived in fear is a life half-lived and Feel the Fear is based on the principle that doing something that scares us, is a good thing. It promises to show you how to ‘turn fear and indecision into confidence and action’. Packed with real-life examples of people who have let fear dominate them, this is a very grounded and level-headed book. There are lots of practical tips and activities to help you start to face your fear, and end it.

This Book Will Save Your Life. A.M. Homes

Ok so it’s a fictional satire rather than self-help novel, but it most certainly IS life-affirming. Written with wonderfully quirky Los Angeles as a backdrop, it’s been hailed as an antidote to modern life. When reclusive stockbroker Richard Novak ends up in the

emergency room, he’s forced to open his eyes to the world around him. It’s the perfect accompaniment for welcoming in the New Year and seizing 2012 with gusto.

How to Win Friends and Influence People. Dale Carnegie

One of the most successful self-help books of all time and not to be confused with the film ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’, which could get you fired. Although the original was published in the 1930s, this master class in how to handle other people

continues to be relevant. With the exception of Willy Loman, there has never been a greater advocate for being ‘well-liked’ than Dale Carnegie.

Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps. Allan and Barbara Pease

I was going to go for the obvious ‘Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus’ here but decided instead to go for

the comical pairing of husband and wife team Allan and Barbara Pease. With chapters entitled ‘Women are Touchy-Feely’ and ‘Why Men Are So Thick-skinned’ you know you’re going to get an amusing and enlightening read. If this is ‘pop psychology’ then call me Frasier Crane. Let me point out here that my Dad mumbles so much we can’t hear HIM and Mum’s an excellent map-reader.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: 101 Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit. Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen

The brainchild of motivational speakers, Canfield and Hansen, the premise is simple: heart-warming stories will make us feel better, just as chicken soup warms the cockles in the winter. The original book sold millions of copies and spawned a series that’s been translated into 54 languages. We must all be suckers for a happy ending. Enjoy it curled up with a bowl of soup and you will be joy personified come February.

My boss gave me a self-help book for my 29th birthday. I was so appalled that someone had deemed me in need of ‘help’ that I quit and went to Australia. So you can say what you like about them, but they really do work…one way or another! Whether it’s a new diet, relationship or job, there’s a book that claims it’ll help you achieve it. What better way to kick-start 2012 than turning over a new page, and a new leaf?

New Year, New You!

The Italian Diet. Gino D’AcampoThe Dukan diet claims ‘three million French women can’t be wrong’ but I say, one gorgeous Italian man who encourages us to eat cheese and pasta…is definitely right! The diet book that looks like a recipe book, this is all about eating healthily without depriving yourself of the things you love the most.

WEBSITES FOR ALL!Having an attractive and professional website is essential to promote your club, business or interests. Without a website, a small business has reduced presence in the market place and is missing an opportunity.

But in these difficult economic times, the very thought of spending hundreds or even thousands of pounds on a website is somewhat daunting and it is this fact alone that deters most small or new set-up businesses from commissioning one.

But Ringstones Media of Winterslow have now made websites available to everyone. From small businesses, entrepreneurs, clubs and individuals at the one end of the spectrum, to retail chains at the other, the objective is to bring stylish and professional websites to all, at a fraction of the cost one would normally expect to pay.

Graphic designer, direct-marketing pro and IT buff Chris Hardwick has enjoyed a colourful career in creative media since the early 1980’s and has an intuitive feel for what the client wants. Working from his office in Winterslow, Chris believes in providing value for money and prides himself on delivering a highly professional product for a very low price. But he finds the creative process the most engaging part of any new project.

“Designing a new website with a client is a collaborative effort and seeing the ideas and creative objectives come together is hugely exciting” says Chris. “The process is something of a ‘voyage of discovery’ for both parties. You know when you get it right.”

Chris also appreciates that these are challenging times, and his ‘unique selling proposition’ is very simple; offering a low monthly payment scheme of £25.00 a month, spreading the cost over a

announces Ageas as its new Principal Sponsor and launches highlights for the 2012 Festival (Fri 25th May - Sat 9th Jun 2012) Salisbury International Arts Festival is delighted to announce Ageas as its new Principal Sponsor whilst launching a fantastic array of highlight events that will feature in the 2012 Festival.

This new Principal Sponsorship will see the Festival rebranded to become the ‘Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival’, commencing in 2012.

The two-week long arts Festival will present a wonderful array of events, where classical and world music share the limelight with international theatre, dance, film, visual arts, children’s events, free outdoor events and a full literature programme. The Festival brings the best artists from around the world, commissioning and creating work unique to the region.

Ageas is a leading insurer providing Motor, Household, Travel, Business and Life insurance to around 8 million customers in the UK. Ageas employs over 5,500 people nationally, with almost 800 at its office in Gloucester, over 1,000 in Bournemouth and over 1,000 employees at its head office, twenty five miles from Salisbury in Eastleigh.

Of the new Principal Sponsor Maria Bota, Festival Director said “We are delighted to welcome Ageas as the new Principal

Sponsor of what will now be known as the Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival. They join us at a time when the Festival is on the move. Audiences have doubled over the last three years and the majority of attendees experience the Festival for free through our outdoor events and free installations. Our Principal Sponsor plays a major part in enabling us to sustain the success of the Festival. We are really enjoying working with Ageas”.

Barry Smith, CEO at Ageas UK adds: “We are delighted to be partnering with the Festival team to launch the Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival. It has been a momentous year for us under a new brand and this sponsorship deal provides us with an excellent platform to raise the profile of the Ageas brand in our local area and internationally through alignment with this world-renowned arts festival. We very much look forward to continuing to work with the Festival team on what will prove to be a very exciting partnership”.

Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival is also pleased to welcome new sponsors and existing sponsors including Friends Life, who continue their long-term support of the Festival as event sponsors in 2012.

The 2012 Festival programme is inspired by the themes of Brazilian culture, fire and

celebration. Highlights launched recently include the free opening night, Le Concert de Feu where ever-lasting memories will be made as world-renowned French Company Les Commandos Percu dazzle audiences with magical music and flames in a pyrotechnic extravaganza. The opening night will also play witness to the unveiling of a new sculpture created by QinetiQ’s young aerospace engineering apprentices, who have been working to create a spectacular sculpture since September 2011. QinetiQ, defence and technology experts are one of the areas largest employers. Ever rich in variety the Festival also comprises a world première composed by the internationally celebrated Jonathan Dove, The Walk from the Garden, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre performing Henry V, extraordinary theatrical juggling by Gandini Juggling and classical music with particular performances celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations at Salisbury Cathedral.

In 2012, the Festival will also present Fire Garden at Stonehenge for the London 2012 Festival at dusk from Tuesday 10 July to Thursday 12 July. French outdoor alchemists Compagnie Carabosse will create a magical, glowing fairytale of fire sculptures that dance in the landscape.

Think like a burglar

Stand outside your property and imagine that you were trying to break in. Where would you start? Flowerpot on the front step? Remove that not-so-secret key that’s underneath. Downstairs loo with the window that is always left open? Buy an air freshener instead! Full height ladder stored at the side of the house? It’s like a written invitation.

Security basics

It doesn’t matter how expensive your alarm system is or how strong your door locks are, if you don’t employ the most basic security measures you are just asking for trouble. As you leave the house or are preparing to go to bed, get into a routine of thinking about each room in turn and whether the windows or doors are likely to have been opened that day. Around 20% of burglaries don’t involve any force – the intruder has simply walked in the unlocked door or climbed through the window. You should extend this mental check to your car and garage too; easily overlooked because they are out of sight once you are indoors.

Remember too that more break-ins happen during daylight hours, so vigilance then is every bit as important as night time.

Good locks = good securityEach of your windows should have a key locking mechanism fitted – standard with most double glazed units these days, and the key should be stored nearby but not within reach or visibility of the window itself. If you have nothing like this at the moment, and can’t afford to upgrade your windows just yet, make it a priority to have locks fitted on all the downstairs windows at least.

Doors should have a good locking system such as an automatic deadlock or a mortise deadlock. Check too that the frame is solid and the glass panel is laminated.

Be flashy – but only with your security80% of burglaries are spur of the moment so the only thing you should be showing off is your security measures. Don’t display your worldly goods to attract the opportunists in the first place. If you have an expensive bike keep it out of sight; don’t leave mobile

phones on the windowsill; and don’t leave the empty box for your flashy new flatscreen TV standing by the bin for days.

The same rules apply with your car. Don’t think that robbers don’t break in just to steal a handful of loose change. They do.

Tell-tale signs

When you are away from home, don’t leave the curtains drawn all day – nobody does that if they are in the house. Use inexpensive timer switches for table lamps and a radio to come on when it’s becoming dark, both downstairs and upstairs. And ask a friend or neighbour to move your post each day particularly where you have an outside box or you can easily see if the post is ‘on the mat’.

These are all basic measures and will go a long way to ensure that your home and property stay safe.

Next month, taking security seriously - back up these basic measures with a solid line of defence.

Your home is not just the place that you keep your belongings and sleep at night. It is somewhere you feel safe and secure, and where you go to take a break from the outside world. So to be the victim of burglary is to suffer more than simply loss of your property and personal effects; it’s a violation of your sanctuary. Prevention is better than cure so put these measures in place before you are caught out.

You’ve had a fantastic Christmas and a fabulous New Year but as great

as all those champagne-filled parties were, the late nights, weeks of socialising and care-free indulgence will have taken its toll on your skin, hair and, not to mention, your waist line.

The seasonal vacation from watching the calories, skipping the daily skin-care routine and using heat styling tools excessively on your hair, leaves us all crying out in January for some products and a routine that will put back what the partying took out.

So, it’s definitely the right time to detox. Firstly, getting rid of the telltale dark circles that have emerged after countless late nights will immediately create a fresher looking face. Use a specialised eye cream and remember to apply lightly, not rubbing or pulling at the delicate eye area.

Putting much needed moisture

back in to dried-out skin, instantly reveals a more youthful and refreshed look. Alcohol consumption, harsh winter weather and centrally-heated rooms sap essential oils from the skin - with all three combining at this time of year, fine lines and wrinkles are sure to appear.

Refreshing the skin with a detoxifying and cleansing face mask is the first stage for post-party pampering. Thoroughly removing deeply ingrained make-up, lurking in the pores, will ensure a blemish-free complexion and a perfect base to absorb much needed moisture.

Gentle exfoliation removes blackheads and prevents the on-set of blemishes, but can be harsh on sensitive skin, so use a fine grain and apply carefully.

It’s easy to assume that oily skin doesn’t need to be moisturised, but it certainly does. Always choose specially formulated products that won’t be too rich

for greasy skin.

Typically defined by having dry and oily parts, combination skin has a greasy T-zone (forehead, nose and chin), combined with flaky, dry cheeks and needs to be treated with special care. It’s worth investing in quality products that will address this problem without exacerbating either part of the skin. In extreme cases though, the only real solution is to treat sections separately.

Always speak to a specialist skin care consultant to find out what will work best for you. Expert advice and free samples that you can try at home will be sure to save you money in the long term.

It takes time to improve the look of tired, battered or blemished skin, but with perseverance you’re sure to look glowing.

To complete your newly refreshed and rejuvenated look, turning attention to your locks

is vital. Left frazzled after weeks of curling, straightening and styling, hair needs to be nurtured back to health.

If you’re finding that dry, split and unsightly ends are making your tresses totally unmanageable and unsightly, then now is the time to book your stylist and try a whole new look. Losing a few inches will greatly improve the appearance and feel of your lengths.

Forget home hair colouring and instead opt for a salon applied colour that will even out dry hair and instantly add a shine. Avoid blonde and instead choose light-reflecting hues of deep brown, red and copper for sumptuous locks.

Use intensive conditioning treatments weekly to repair weak ends and ensure that you make time to properly care for your hair.

Remember: a glossy mane is key to creating a youthful appearance so when it’s combined with a fabulously refreshed complexion, it will leave you looking totally flawless for the coming year.

Going Green by James baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Top tips on turning your motoring life ECOTHERE are some eco-warriors out there who believe the humble automobile is the devil on wheels. But in recent years car manufacturers have worked hard to change the car’s planet killing image with hybrids, electric vehicles and fuel-sipping eco models like VW’s Bluemotion range.

But what if you can’t afford a new car and still want to go green? Well, fortunately there are ways you can cut your carbon footprint – and it doesn’t have to mean walking!

Simply thinking about how and when you use your car, the products you use and the way you look after your vehicle can make a real difference.

Simply planning trips to coincide with one another, not going out especially to buy fuel, and sharing a commute can all help. But it’s not just about how and when

you use your motor – just as important is the way it’s looked after. Here are our practical tips to make car ownership greener.

CHANGE YOUR STYLENo one likes to be told how to drive – but if there’s one guaranteed way of slashing your CO2 output it’s by changing your driving habits. Avoid harsh acceleration and braking, drive with the windows up to avoid drag and remove any unused extras such as roof racks. Stick to the speed limits and change up at the most economical point – roughly 2,500rpm for petrols and 2,000rpm for diesels. And

think about switching off the engine if you’re going to be stationary for more than two minutes.

GREEN OPTIONTry a fuel saving tyre - such as the Michelin Energy or Firestone Fuel Saver - which claim to reduce fuel consumption by adding silica to their

compounds. And you could

try ‘green’ cleaning products, like the CarPlan EcoCar range which offers a host of environmentally-friendly products derived from vegetable and plant extracts.

IN A LATHERA clean car might be a pretty car, but do you need to do it every week? If you really must spruce it up, use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose to save water or cut it out completely with a waterless cleaning agent like Miracle Drywash which lifts dirt with a cloth.

SPRING CLEANCarrying around your golf clubs and a set of tools can seriously inflate your fuel consumption – 100kg of unnecessary extra weight can increase it by as much as six per cent. Have a clean out of any unneeded kit in your car and stash it away in your garage instead.

CHECK IT OUTWhen your car is serviced regularly it’s not only less likely to break down, but it’ll be more

Motoring

26 | The SP5 Magazine

Page 27: SP5 Jan/Feb 2012

environmentally friendly too. Good quality oil, fresh spark plugs and air filters are all essential – neglect any and your fuel consumption will be worse and your carbon footprint higher.

PLAN AHEADUsing sat nav is not only a great way to make motoring less stressful, but it’s green too! By avoiding getting lost and taking the most direct route to your destination you’ll cut fuel bills. Use one with traffic jam detecting capability and you’ll cut CO2 even more.

HOME ALONEBy servicing your car at home you can ensure all parts used are recycled. Fluids, such as waste oil and antifreeze, should be taken to a specific recycling centre. Starter motors, alternators and some bulbs can also be recycled. Check tyre pressures as part of the service, and periodically in between – correctly inflated rubber saves fuel.

AT YOUR SERVICEEven things as simple as insurance, breakdown cover and vehicle inspections can be green. The Environmental Transport Association provides all of them in a carbon neutral way.

A Proverbial Life...

CrackedThere’s a broken tile in my bathroom that’s about to cause a major incident.

This isn’t any old tile; this is the tile that despite my best efforts has remained broken for three years. This is the tile that may just signal the end of my marriage, my descent into screaming madness and the end of peace in this household. This is the tile that haunts me with its broken corner and cracked face.

Over the years repeated requests to replace this tile have elicited a variety of responses from Mr Fixit (otherwise known as Husband).

Promises have been made to fix it: ‘Tomorrow, at the weekend, when I get a spare minute.’ Multiple reasons have been given as to why this tile has not been sorted out: a lost tile cutter, a lack of adhesive, a slip of memory, a dearth of daylight (apparently tile fixing can only occur in optimum weather conditions).

I’ve even offered to do the job myself. This was met with snorts of laughter and comments about my inability to change a light bulb; which is unfair as I can change light bulbs in an emergency...as long as there is a

step ladder to hand and someone to catch me if I fall.

I’ve been a reasonable woman – so far.

I’ve left a respectable interval between tile fixing requests; I haven’t tutted, rolled my eyes, muttered under my breath or screamed at the top of my lungs - yet. In the normal course of events a broken tile wouldn’t overly bother me, but after three years I feel I’ve got just cause for grievance.

Therefore, I have now decided to take matters totally, completely and utterly into my own hands. I’m going to take unilateral action to bring ‘Tilegate’ to a satisfactory conclusion – I’m going to get someone in to do it. This is something I’ve previously offered to do, only to be met with looks of absolute incredulity and horror that I would even consider such disloyalty to this home’s Mr Fixit.

However, I’ve been driven to take this action by a nugget of information that came my way yesterday. My Mr Fixit

has offered

to do some wallpapering in our son’s home. Now, not only has he offered to do it but he’s set a firm date

for work to commence. I’m dumbfounded, flabbergasted and livid. I don’t begrudge our son his father’s help; however, I want this tile fixed!

Therefore, I’ve already phoned up a very nice man who advertises locally. He’s coming next week to replace the tile, and he’s also going to have a look at the carpet that needs fixing down, the sticking door in the kitchen and the loose blind in the living room. I’m on a bit of a roll now.

I have no intention of telling my beloved Mr Fixit that another man will be trespassing on his territory. Instead I intend to wait until he notices that the offending tile has been replaced; then I shall casually say: ‘Oh yes, I got someone in to do it.’

I can’t wait.

The straw that broke the camel’s back...

Sign up to the Green Manifesto...Green print doesn’t have to cost the earth

The next time you buy print, think ‘environment’. That’s the message from Foundry

Press, the Horsham printers that have just launched their Green Manifesto under a continuing drive to meet and exceed their obligations to the planet.

Foundry Press are breaking the mould of print industry traditions by developing a programme of environmental management regimes, right from paper supply through to finished printed product, that includes sourcing vegetable rather than oil-based inks and recycling aluminium printing plates and waste paper.

Since taking over the reins of the business, Managing Director Bruce Phillips and business partner Alan Houliston are committed to gaining the best possible green credentials, at a time when buyers are growing increasingly choosy about where they source their print. They have also invested nearly £2m in cutting edge technology, including a 10-colour

Heidelberg press - and a folding and stitching machine that alone cost £350,000. Already accredited with ISO9001/2000 and ISO14001 management standards, they are now one of only 180 printers in the UK that have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

“We take our environmental obligations seriously” declares Bruce proudly, “The FSC certification sets us apart from virtually all of the UK’s 10,500 printers and is acknowledged to be the most important printing environmental scheme currently available”.

Under FSC certification, Foundry Press are pledged to source their paper only from the world’s ‘responsibly managed’ forests, Bruce explains. Approved by the World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Woodlands Trust, the FSC is an international, independent body dedicated to promoting such woodland areas, he adds. Foundry’s Green Manifesto goes

further though, Bruce adds. Now certified as ‘carbon balanced’, by reducing and compensating for the carbon dioxide emissions generated by the business, the company aims to achieve a zero carbon footprint in the near future.

That’s not all that’s changing in the print world. Customers want the assurance of knowing that a printer can deliver on quality, consistency and price. Bruce told us “...the industry is moving strongly towards a service-oriented sector, first impressions count even more now and green credentials are an important part of the mix, as are value for money and a consistently high quality of finished product.”

Whether your requirement is for business stationery or sophisticated, high-end literature...

We spend approximately a third of our lives asleep. It is as important to

our bodies as eating, drinking and breathing. Sleep helps to repair and restore our brains and bodies. Poor sleep can affect mood, concentration, judgement and reduce our immune system’s ability to fight off minor ailments such as colds and flus. Long-term sleep deprivation can lead to health problems including diabetes, heart disease and clinical depression.

Eat breakfastDid you know, skipping breakfast can put you on the path to poor sleep? It all starts with eating breakfast within 30-45 minutes of waking, as there is a biochemical link back to our sleep.

“Your levels of adrenalin are increased if you do not eat breakfast and your brain starts to shut down non-essential functions including the production of the hormones, serotonin and melatonin,” says sleep expert, Dr Nerina Ramlakhan. “Melatonin is the hormone required at the end of the day to sleep. By skipping breakfast you produce less melatonin and as your adrenalin levels are higher, you will feel

more anxious towards the end of the day and therefore less able to sleep.”

Keep a watchful eye on your caffeine and sugar intakeEnsuring you eat healthily and minimise sugary snacks is essential for keeping your brain and body contented. Sugar causes the body to run on a higher energy pattern, which creates highs and lows as the quick-fix energy hit wears off. This, in turn, sparks a need for more sugar in the body via drinks and caffeine.

Eating little and often and keeping hydrated with water, herbal teas and fruit juices, while minimising your intake of fizzy drinks and caffeine, will help ready mind and body for sleep. Nerina recommends avoiding caffeine after 2pm each day if you are having trouble sleeping.

Don’t eat too lateEating your main meal earlier can also help with improving sleep. A large meal can impact on your digestive system and cause heartburn. Leave three hours before having a meal and going to bed.

Make time to unwindAs we rush through each day,

balancing a busy lifestyle and juggling responsibilities left, right and centre, finding time for a rest can feel impossible. However, if the mind has no opportunity to process information from the day, it waits until bedtime to recap, when the frantic pace of the day has finally stopped. This results in a poor, restless sleep. Nerina suggests trying to build rest into your day by meditating or power napping. The 15-minute time out from your day will create that internal chemistry that is just right for sleep. Additionally, deal with worries or a heavy workload by making a list of things to be tackled the next day.

Make your bedroom a sleep havenCreate a restful space: your bedroom should be as quiet and dark as possible. “Managing technology is very important as you need a break from TV, computers, emails and mobile phones, before going to bed. Without this break, you are over stimulating your mind and it will be unable to find processing time,” says Nerina. Set boundaries with technology and keep all gadgets out of the bedroom.

How to Sleep BetterSleep is an essential and involuntary process that is vital for maintaining good mental and physical health. one in four people are thought to suffer from sleep problems at some point in their lives, including deprivation and insomnia.
