Space activities at KTH
Co-ordinators Yifang Ban, Christer Fuglesang, Göran Marklund, Mark Pearce, Carl-Mikael Zetterling
• Approximately 50 researchers working on space-related topics • Experimental space activities have been present at KTH since
1960s, inspired by Nobel Prize winner Hannes Alfvén. • Research areas: astrophysics, space and plasma physics, Earth
observation, satellite navigation, physiology, technology development and education.
• Collaboration with industry
• Funding: Swedish National Space Board, Swedish Research
Council, ESA, Formas, Wallenberg Foundations, VINNOVA.
• A new development – co-ordination: • Lead by Christer Fuglesang, astronaut and professor
in space physics at KTH. • Aim: to improve co-ordination at KTH. • Aim: national co-ordination for Horizon 2020.

KTH participates in the MMS project
• 4 satellite constellation. • Launch in 2014. • Budget > 1000 MUSD. • Goal: to understand
‘reconnection’ – a key process för energy conversion in space.

• Mapping global urbanisation.
• Monitoring environmental changes.
• Natural disaster monitoring.
• Temperature measurements of land areas and climate
• Support for urban planning
Stockholm
Shanghai
• Opened on 6th Sept 2013 by ESA’s Director för manned spaceflight, Swedish National Space Board’s Director and KTH’s President.
• Unique compentence in Europe. • Contract with ESA to support the implementation of ESA’s human
research programme on ISS.
• Research, development and teaching for manned spaceflight (important for space tourism!)
Human centrifuge Bed rest studies Medical consequences of G-forces and inactivity
Centre for flight- & space physiology
• Programme responsible: Prof. Christer Fuglesang.
• Approximately 50 students per year.
• Well established programme (one of KTH’s oldest). High quality.
• International exchange – a ‘student-magnet’.
Four themes
Close contact with industry / commerce.
Aerospace Master’s programme
• GPS & acceleration data from 4 probes. • Data for density height profile and temperature. • Launched 9th May 2013 – worked as planned!
MUSCAT 2013-05-09 REXUS projects at KTH
REXUS: bilateral agreement between Swedish and German space agencies
Latest experiment: MUSCAT

Multidisciplenary international team of students
Education and outreach • Space figures in
several of KTH’s education programmes. Strong and growing interest from students.
• Space stimulates
public interest in science and technology.
