SPACE APPLICATIONS CENTRE AHMEDABAD Date: 8 th April, 2017 Story of the Week ISRO/DOS Organized 36-hours non-stop Smart India Hackathon-2017 (SIH) Grand Finale during 1-2 April, 2017, at Ahmedabad Nodal Centre, along with Gujarat Technological University (GTU), Gujarat University (GU) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under the aegis of MHRD. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space (DOS), organized Smart India Hackathon-2017 (SIH-2017) Grand Finale, at Gujarat University Convention Hall, Ahmedabad, Gujarat during 1-2 April, 2017 for Ahmedabad Nodal Centre. This Grand Finale was a 36-hours non-stop digital programming competition held simultaneously at 29 different nodal centers (26 Locations) across India. ISRO/DOS had been the ‘Premier Partner’ in this initiative of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under the aegis of Ministry of HRD (MHRD), i4c, MyGov, Persistent Systems, NASSCOM and Rambhau Mhalgi Pabodini. Smart India Hackathon 2017 harnesses creativity & expertise of students, builds funnel for ‘Startup India, Standup India’ campaign, crowd-sources solutions for improving governance and quality of life, and provides opportunity to citizens to provide innovative digital solutions to India’s daunting problems. The preparations for the event started from September-2016 onwards and for the first time ever, 29 different government ministries and departments came together and posed 598 problem statements to 30 lakh technical students from India. Smart India Hackathon 2017 has been billed as the ‘world’s biggest open innovation model’ that other countries can replicate. On this occasion, ISRO Chairman & Secretary, DOS, Shri A.S.Kirankumar said in his message that “There has been a significant rise in the use of cyber technologies in various space mission support functions within ISRO/DOS, which has posed new challenges to ISRO’s IT and space assets security apart from the usual dealing with highly confidential and sensitive data related to space missions. Thus, deterrent measures against cyberattacks as well as enforcing data security measures to create proactive security monitoring capability are vital for ISRO. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space (DOS), organized Smart India

Hackathon-2017 (SIH-2017) Grand Finale, at Gujarat University Convention Hall, Ahmedabad, Gujarat

during 1-2 April, 2017 for Ahmedabad Nodal Centre. This Grand Finale was a 36-hours non-stop digital

programming competition held simultaneously at 29 different nodal centers (26 Locations) across

India. ISRO/DOS had been the ‘Premier Partner’ in this initiative of All India Council for Technical

Education (AICTE) under the aegis of Ministry of HRD (MHRD), i4c, MyGov, Persistent Systems,

NASSCOM and Rambhau Mhalgi Pabodini. Smart India Hackathon 2017 harnesses creativity &

expertise of students, builds funnel for ‘Startup India, Standup India’ campaign, crowd-sources

solutions for improving governance and quality of life, and provides opportunity to citizens to provide

innovative digital solutions to India’s daunting problems. The preparations for the event started from

September-2016 onwards and for the first time ever, 29 different government ministries and

Information security experts from all ISRO-DOS centre have meticulously worked out 53 problems covering categories like Network and Email Security, Data Confidentiality & Leakage Prevention, End point/ Perimeter Security against Cyber-Attacks, Access control and Other Applications. These problems were posted on web and the 263 idea submissions were received. 51 ideas had been shortlisted for final round. Online training session was also organized by ISRO on 8th March, 2017 for training the shortlisted teams. During the ‘Grand Finale’ at Ahmedabad, on April 1 & 2, 2017, 49 teams consisting of 392 youngsters (6 students & 2 mentors per team) participated and worked nonstop for 36 hours to build innovative digital solutions for 21 out of 53 problems posed by ISRO/DOS. On the night of 1st April, 2017 (22.00-23.00 hrs.), Honb’le Prime Minister, Shri Narendrabhai Modi, addressed all the participants across India and also interacted via Live Video Conference with student participants of Ahmedabad nodal centre along with those of Allahabad, Coimbatore, Kolkota and Pune centres. ISRO Chairman/DOS Secretary, Shri A.S.Kirankumar and Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe, chairman, AICTE, especially flew into Ahmedabad on the evening of 1st April, 2017 to attend this event and encourage & motivate the student participants at night. Honb’le education minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendrasinhji Chudasma, along with Director-SAC, Shri

Tapan Misra, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Technological University (GTU), Dr. Navin Seth and Incharge

VC of Gujarat University, Dr. Himanshu Pandya were the chief guests at the inaugural function of SIH-

2017 on 1st April, 2017.

Chairman-ISRO/Secretary-DOS, Shri A.S.Kirankumar, Vice Chancellor of GTU, Dr. Navin Seth, and

Associate Director-SAC, Shri DK Das were the chief guests at the Valedictory function on 2nd April,

2017. Student participants had lively and vibrant interactions with Chairman-ISRO and asked many

questions related to ISRO’s current and future space programmes. Chairman-ISRO gave away the

certificates and Mementos to all the participating teams and had photo sessions with all the teams.

Shri A.S. Kirankumar also gave away the Prizes & Trophies, sponsored by ISRO/DOS, to the winner

team (Rs. 1 Lakh digital payment), first runner-up team (Rs. 75,000) and second runner-up team (Rs.

50,000) and two consolation prizes (Rs. 10,000 each from M/s. Persistent and M/s. Deloittee). Apart

from these prizes, winners also get a chance to be part of the NASSCOM’s 10,000 Startups program.

Dr. Haresh Bhatt, IT Security Officer, SAC and Shri Nilesh Desai, Deputy Director-SNAA/SAC served as

the main Nodal Officers from ISRO/DOS side for conducting this event and Shri Hiranmay Mahanta

and Ms. Tosha Shukla coordinated the event from GTU/AICTE side, while Scientific Secretary, Dr.

P.G.Diwaker, Director-SAC, Shri Tapan Misra and ISRO Chairman, Shri A.S.Kirankumar and GTU VC Dr.

Navin Seth provided the overall guidance. A panel consisting of chief judge Dr. Haresh Bhatt and 9

other Judges, all senior ISRO Scientists assisted by additional 17 domain experts drawn from among

various ISRO Centres, carried out 3 rounds of mentoring and 4 rounds of judging the participants at

regular interval during the event. Thus, it was continuous hackathon for the judges & expert. SAC’s

Local Organizing Committee under chairmanship of Shri Rajesh Khandelwal provided necessary

support to the main Organizers. In all around 200+ Volunteers drawn from GTU, GU, SAC/ISRO and

other agencies helped arrange the logistics (Help Desk, Registration, Accommodation, Food, Snacks,

Tea/Coffee, certificates, trophies, mementos, etc.) for the participants and the invitees and put-in

untiring efforts and worked hard for many days to make the conduct of this historical event hassle-

free and very successful.
