City watering restrictions lifted The City of Merritt has announced that all watering restrictions in the City have been lifted, effective immediately. The Coldwater river is ‘still chal- lenged’, but with the move into fall the lower temperatures and increased rain dramatically reduces the stress on the river, and the water levels are far higher than they were in August and September. Pile burning planned for Merritt area The BC Wildfire Service plans to burn 520 piles of wood debris in 3 locations in the Merritt area over the next few months to help manage wildfire risk, rehabilitate the landscape, and reduce accumulations of forest fuels in interface zones around the community. The first burn is scheduled to start as early as Oct. 5, and will continue period- ically until Dec. 20: Fox Farm – 154 piles east of Hwy 5 at about the 5km mark on Fox Farm Road; Rodeo Grounds – 326 piles southwest of town, about 2km up Lindley Creek Rd; North Nicola – 40 piles along North Nicola Rd, between the 2.5-km mark & 3.5-km mark. Smoke from these burn piles will be visible from the City of Merritt and sur- rounding areas. The goal is to reduce the threat of erosion & promote the re-estab- lishment of vegetation. The exact timing of the burns will de- pend on site, weather, venting and snow conditions. Burning will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow smoke to dissipate. Staff from the BC Wildfire Service will carefully prepare, control and monitor these fires.
