‘Traces’ is a group mixed media exhibition by four artists interested in integrating their varied
practices and backgrounds towards the exploration of a shared theme. Each artist has
approached the theme from an individual starting point, reflecting physical or historic realities
and personal or shared interests in the imaging of evidence.
Mary Brady’s work is based on the traces of people left behind in worn clothing and old faded
photographs and the memories and feelings they evoke. Pauline Crothers uses textiles to
reflect the timeless art of Newgrange. For Lynne Foster Fitzgerald ‘Traces’ represents an
indication of existence or occurrence of something. Biddy Scott draws on insignificant ‘Traces’
of past presence. ‘Traces’ runs from 14 -26 August 2012 at Signal Arts Centre, Bray.

Carol Boland
he idea of a Metropolitan Arts Centre for
Belfast was first discussed in the late
nineties. Back then, it was to be an
ambitious coalition of various arts and
educational organisations housed in one
building. After years of negotiation,
appraisal, planning and re-planning, the
£18.4m MAC has emerged.
The MAC takes us into a whole new realm of
city centre arts space. With its quirky design,
by local architects Hackett & Hall, and
situated on the north side of St Anne’s
Square, this ‘world-class venue in Belfast’s
Cathedral Quarter will be home to all kinds
of exhibitions, blockbuster performances,
experimental works and endless goings-on.’
The opening of the MAC marks the continual
development of the arts infrastructure in
Belfast, and shows the level of support from
Government towards arts and culture.

LOVERS: Winners & Losers
Brian Friel’s two short plays from show the
fallible hopes and disenchantments love can
bring.
Winners is the story of a young couple
preparing for their final school exams and an
imminent pregnancy. In Losers, the lovers
may be older, but their passion is no less real
- a passion which Hanna's bedridden
tyrannical mother is determined to frustrate.

The History of Shaving
What hirsute could compete in this cut throat world
where close shaves are a daily event?
The mirror tells me what has changed,
a temporary reprieve from the rough,
skin soft as lips, opened to the sharp.
A cut without resistance is all that is required,
the honing stone readied,
the blade moves again, hearts beat, time passes.
I see her tears running down the glass,
rivulets of rejection.
Her eyes do not look at me
and I realize what I can no longer face.
Water scalds where cuts are deep,
the bleed takes a long time to stop.
