Spain Claims a New Empire (1500s)

1. Spain was the first European country to colonize and explore Americas, controlled land from Mexico to tip of South America

a. Conquistadors- Spanish explorers who claimed land for Spain with help of superior weapons, Native Americans allies, and spreading disease

b. Hernan Cortes- conquers Mexico and Aztecs with 600 men, 17 horses, and 10 cannons

c. *Spain’s control of Mexico made Spain wealthy and the strongest country in Europe

What’s happening in the US?

1. Spain explores US southwest (CA. AZ., TX.FL.) but finds little gold– *Spain focuses on converting Indians to Christianity

2. Missions- plantations designed to convert Indians while making a profit off Indian labor– *Helps destroy Native American culture and leads

tribes to rebel• Pueblo and Pope- lead 17000 Indians in 1680 against

Spanish in New Mexico that kicked Spanish out for 14 years

• **Lack of wealth and Indian rebellions helped shift Spain’s attention away from North America allowing other European countries to set up colonies in the present day US
