Tissue paper flowers are a popular decoration in homes throughout Mexico.
Materials:
Four 6” x 12” sheets of brightly colored tissue paperOne green pipe cleanerScissors
Steps:
1. Stack the four sheets of tissue paper.
2. Starting at the long end of the sheets, fold the papers back and forth, like a fan. When you are finished, you should have a 12”-long closed fan, about 1” wide.
3. Round the ends of the closed fan by cutting off the corners.
4. Place the middle of the pipe cleaner around the middle of the closed fan and twist it to squeeze the paper. Pull both ends of the pipe cleaner down to create a stem.
5. Fan out the paper on both sides of the pipe cleaner. Gently pull each sheet of paper up to create flower petals. Rearrange and straighten the petals to your liking.
6. Twist the two ends of the pipe cleaner together to create a sturdy stem.
(Extra Credit)Hands-on-culture: Papel Picado
El papel picado (cut paper) is a well-known Mexican craft. Colored tissue paper is cut into small patterns similar to
making paper snowflakes. The cut paper is then hung on a string to make a banner to use as decoration at many
different celebrations. You can also find these directions on p. 240 of your
Realidades textbook.
Materials:
Colored tissue paper cut into 12” x 18” sheetsStaplerScissorsString
Steps:
1. Spread the tissue paper flat. Fold down 1” on the 18” side for making a hanging flap.
2. Fold the paper in half on the 12” side and crease on the fold to make a sharp line.
3. Fold the paper twice, diagonally.
4. Cut out designs along the folded edge. Experiment with snowflake or other geometric designs.
5. Cut a scalloped design on the outside edge.
6. Open the cutout and staple to a string to hang across a room to decorate for a fiesta.
