A very warm welcome to the 5th Edition of the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival; time to catch up with the most recent and significant cinema titles in Spanish. I am happy to announce a vibrant and energetic programme in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling for all ages.

We are proud to make our Festival accessible, inclusive and diverse for all audiences. Giant, a very moving drama about a man who never stops growing, is our opening film. The diverse showcase includes: Comedy: Lots of Kids, a Monkey, and a Castle. Thrillers: Marshland, Mist and the Maiden. Drama: A Fantastic Woman, The Summit. History: Militiawomen, One Day I Saw 10,000 Elephants and many more!!!!

Welcome Andalusia will be the focus for our Gastronomic evening and the comedy, Hopelessly Devout, breaks through the traditional taboos around Catholicism and Andalusian traditions towards women.

We are delighted that actors and film directors will be presenting some of the films: José Ramón Chávez, Jon Garaño, Íciar Bollaín, Ana Murugarren among others. Also, our local cinema “experts”, Dr D. Sorfa, Professor N. Capdevila, Dr J. Saval, Dr A. Grohmann, will be here with us again sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for the films.

Massive thanks to everybody who has been involved in this edition and above all, to the sponsors who have trusted us and helped to make this festival possible. Thanks also to ESFF team and volunteers.

Finally thanks to you all, our great and loyal audience who support us once again.

We hope to see you at our screenings and events!

The Bastards' Fig Tree La higuera de los bastardos Ana Murugarren · Spain · 2017 · 103' · Comedy / Drama · Cast: Karra Elejalde, Pepa Aniorte, Carlos Areces · Cert. +12 · Spanish with English subtitles. Edinburgh · Filmhouse Sunday 07/10/18 · 17:40h Followed by a Q&A with Ana Murugarren (Director) and Dr José Saval Monday 08/10/18 · 20:30h Followed by a Q&A with Ana Murugarren (Director) and Dr José Saval

Near the end of the Spanish Civil War, a “trigger happy” fascist soldier turns into a singular hermit. He gets caught up in the care of a fig tree after the look in a ten year old child’s eyes, the son of one of his victims, awakes in him the certainty that the kid will kill him as soon as he reaches sixteen years of age. “The most delightful thing for a director is to be provided with a good story and a good cast to entertain the audience. In “The Bastards Fig Tree” I have the fortune of having both, an excellent novel written by Ramiro Pinilla, hard and crazy at the same time, and a troupe of amazing actors. Karra Elejalde, in an incredible moment, has found in the character of Rogelio his match to gift us with one of those wonderful performances that movie making holds from time to time.”
