White Belt Syllabus

On this course you will learn how to:

1. introduce yourself and ask other's personal information

2. talk about your daily routine

3. talk about friends and family members, and

4. talk about common actions like eating, buying, practicing a sport, hobbies, etc.

After completing this level, you will speak slowly and your understanding of slow-paced speech will be limited; you will have a good pronunciation of vowels. Furthermore, your vocabulary will be limited to most common verbs, nouns and adjectives. With this vocabulary, you should be able to build basic sentences (subject, verb and object, and time expressions).

My, your, his, her, our, their are modifiers used to show ownership, as in: my house, your car or her book.Let's see their equivalents in Spanish:

English singular plural

Examples:

my house = mi casa

my houses = mis casas

your car = tu carro

your cars = tus carros

his book = su libro

his books = sus libros

her pen = su lapicero

our tables = nuestras mesas

their computer = su computadora

their computers = sus computadoras

Su, like tu, can mean "your." The difference lies in the degree of formality the speaker wishes to convey. Youuse su in formal speech and tu in informal speech.

Note:

In "tu carro", tu = your as in "your car"

In "tú corres", tú = you as in "you run".

Su has four meanings: his, her, their and your (formal)...

Luis helps his mother. Luis ayuda a su madre.

Carla talks with her boyfriend. Carla habla con su novio.

They look for their sister. Ellos buscan a su hermana.

Your mother looks for your sister. Su madre busca a su hermana.

If the meaning of su is not clear from the context a phrase consisting of de + pronoun may be added to clarifywho is referred to.

I need his book Necesito su libro.

His book or her book? ¿El libro de él o el libro de ella?

Marta and Javier wrote a lot of articles. Marta y Javier escribieron muchos artículos.

Her articles were published in Spain and his articlesin Chile.

Los artículos de ella se publicaron en España y losartículos de él en Chile.

Mi, tu and su do not have masculine and feminine forms. They stay the same, regardless of the gender of thenouns they modify.

Nuestro means "our” and has four forms, depending on the noun they modify.

our car = nuestro coche

our house = nuestra casa

our books = nuestros libros

our pens = nuestras plumas

Tarea de preparación: (hacer en casa, antes de clase)

1. Study the following greetings. Try to pronounce them in front of your tutor when you get to class.

2. Try to write simple sentences describing pictures of 4 famous people you like or admire. Bring thepictures of these famous people to share with your classmates and/or teacher. Be ready to read yoursentences in class. Example: Su nombre es Jennifer Lopez. Su profesión es actriz. Su nacionailidad esamericana, etc. These sentences do not need to be perfect. Please do not use a translator or ask the help of alatino friend. Try to guess what the words to use are. Your tutor will then adjust his or her teaching basedon the input gathered from this activity.

Actividades: (en clase)

1. The instructor introduces himself saying: Mi nombre es..., then, you are asked to use the same structure inorder to say your name. Then, the instructor uses the form: Tu nombre es.... in order to mention yourname and asks you to repeat the same process in order to mention your instructor's name as well. Finallythe instructor points at another person saying Su nombre es... in order to mention his/her name.

2. Read Hola, mi nombre es.... Then make your own paragraph using your personal information.

3. Share your pictures and sentences about the famous people you like with your classmates and/or tutor.

4. Your instructor will ask you specific questions using the following Tarjetas by chance. Then, you willchoose the cards by chance and will ask him/her questions using what you practiced recently (Minombre/apellido/teléfono es...). You can work in pairs if taking group classes.

The words "I", "you", "he", "she", "we", "you-all", and "they" have the following corresponding words in Spanish:

"Usted" is more formal. "Tú" is more familiar and is used among friends, coworkers, relatives, or when addressing a child.

Spanish is more gender-specific than English. So, in Spanish, there are two ways to say "we":

Translations of I, you, he, she, it, we, you and they are many times omitted in Spanish because the action word shows who is performing the action.

In Spanish, you will never use the auxiliary do/does/did when forming yes/no questions. The order of the elements of the question, though, is not important. Look these examples:

In Spanish there are two action words that mean TO BE: Ser and Estar...

Ser is used when talking about characteristics that are Permanent.

Estar is used when talking about characteristics that are Temporary.

Permanent characteristics tend to be permanent in the long run while temporary conditions normally change in the short term (are volatile). Ser and Estar cannot be interchanged.

Look at the following table to see how these two actions change when describing different people:

You would always use Estar with locations, though, despite the fact that locations could be considered very stable.

There are some characteristics that can fit in both cases. You'll choose the best description according to the situation you want to describe.

In English, words that represent things do not have gender. In Spanish, in contrast, wordsthat represent things are always either masculine or feminine. The word "jardin" (garden), forexample, is always masculine and the word "pelota" (ball) is always feminine.

In Spanish, in most cases, it's very easy to know which word is masculine or feminine. Mostwords that represent things including concepts that end in –o are masculine:

Most words that represent things including concepts that end in –a, in contrast, are feminine:

Words that represent people match the natural gender of the person. If it ends in o refers to amale individual or animal. If it ends in a refers to a female individual or animal.

More than one

Words in Spanish change to their plural forms by adding the letters -s or -es.

If the singular word ends in a, e, o we make the plural by adding –s and using los, las,unos o unas instead of el, la, un, or una.

To answer to the question what time it is, use:

Notice that all times are feminine, therefore, use either la or las in front of them.

What time is it? ¿Qué hora es?

It's one o'clock. Es la una.

In contrast, to talk about schedules or say that something occurs at a specific time, use the formula a + la(s) + time.

The movie begins at ten o'clock. La película empieza a las diez.

The equivalents of English a.m. and p.m. in Spanish are the phrases de la mañana, de la tarde and de la noche added to the expression of time.

Capítulo 10: Speaking about Daily Routines.

In Spanish action words have two parts: the base (the part that won't change) and an extra part that consists in the ending -ar, -er, and the -ir. This last part will help us classify the action words in three groups: -ar action words, -er action words and -ir action words. Like in English, the action word will change according to the person that is conjugated. Let's see in the following charts how these changes happen.

1.- Action words that end in -AR:

These two groups will be conjugated sharing the same form. However, -IR action words won't be able to follow the pattern -er with Nosotros. Instead it will be necessary to add an I instead of an E.

In order to conjugate verbs that end in -er or -ir we drop the ending -er or -ir and we add the following endings for each person:

Action words whose stems (roots) change when used with different type of people are calledirregular action words. Good news is that there are only a few irregular action words inSpanish. Observe that, no matter the verb, the nosotros form is always regular (doesnot follow the irregular pattern).

Irregular action words can be grouped according to how their stem changes, as follows:

The -ando/iendo form in Spanish corresponds to the –ing form in English when used with the action "Estar".

In this form, ...

the actions that end in -ar ... ... will now end in -ando instead of AR.

the actions that end in -er/-ir... ... will now end in -iendo instead of ER or IR.

Irregular verbs (recommended for orange belt):

To form the -iendo form of -ir/-er irregular verbs, change e to i or o to u in the stem, and then add -iendo to the stem of the verb.
