audio language instruction, but it also harnesses the incredible power of your subconscious mind to help you to learn a language without your even being aware of it. This comprehensible language input that we all need in order to become proficient at speaking and understanding a new language is presented to you in the format of Audio Snapshots and other presentations in the program. For this reason be sure to listen closely when prompted to do so, always repeat when prompted, and always attempt to make your accent sound exactly like that of the native speakers. And welcome mistakes and learn from them. In foreign language learning you literally fail your way to fluency, each time failing a little bit less and correcting your mistakes a little bit more until you are proficiently speaking in your new language. At times when learning to speak your new language you might think your program goes too fast. Not true. Don’t quit. Practice every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes to keep the ball rolling. Keep listening, repeating, and remembering with your program every chance you get. And before you know it what used to be impossible for you to say or to understand becomes easy and a normal part of your daily routine if you just take daily action to achieve it. And I know you will!

You are handsome. You are beautiful. Forgive me. I’m sorry. Out of sight, out of mind. Eyes that don’t see, heart that doesn’t feel. to get engaged. He is engaged. She is engaged. to get married I’m going to get married. How did it go for you? ¿Cómo le fue? Fantastic! ¡Fantástico! Congrats! That was really good! Now, let’s return to our lesson. Lesson 1 - Section 5 (audio minutes 45:46 – 58:56) love Love is blind. There are actually several ways to express the idea of love in Spanish. One is the standard form which is the same verb as ‘to want’ …… And then there’s a deeper form of spiritual love which is expressed by another verb, which is …… So if you were to say to someone in the familiar, standard way of saying ‘I love you’ it would be ……

Eres guapo. Eres hermosa. Perdóname. Lo siento. Ojos que no ven, corazón que no siente. Ojos que no ven, corazón que no siente. comprometerse Él está comprometido. Ella está comprometida. casarse Me voy a casar. el amor

El amor es ciego. querer amar Te quiero.

Page 15: Spanish for Love

And if you really wanted to be a little bit more spiritual about it and love them from your soul you would say…… Great. And if you wanted to say, for example, ‘I love my family ‘ it would be the same as ‘I want my family’, but it literally means ‘I love my family’. My family loves me. Okay. And now the standard way, the most common way, to say ‘I love you’ in Spanish in the familiar would be …… And there are lots of songs in Spanish entitled, ‘Te Quiero’. And if you want to say, ‘I love you a lot’ in the familiar, of course, you would say…… If you want to get deep about it, spiritual, once again you would say a different form which would be…… And, you know, we almost don’t even have to say ‘Te amo mucho’ because ‘Te amo’ is almost like you’re already up there, so why add to something that’s already so intense. Now, if you were to ask someone if they love you, in the familiar, you would say…… Do you love me, or not? How would you say, ‘We love each other’ in the standard form?

They love each other. I love him. (standard form) I love her. I love them. (masculine, plural) I love them. (feminine) I love everybody.

Te amo. Quiero a mi familia. Mi familia me quiere. Te quiero. Te quiero mucho. Te amo. ¿Me Quieres? ¿Me quieres, o no? Nos queremos. Se quieren. Lo quiero. La quiero. Los quiero. Las quiero. Quiero a todo el mundo.

Everybody loves me. That sounds slightly pretentious, but anyway, I think you get the idea. How would you say …… a kiss And you’re standing in front of a little baby and you want the baby to give you a little kiss. …… a little kiss So you tell a little baby, ‘Give me a little kiss’. Okay, and as we evolve here, how would we say …… a hug Hug me. Give me a hug. Hug me. a smile Give me a smile. There’s a really cool verb in Spanish for ‘to fall in love’…… I fall I love. I’m falling in love. I fell in love. Okay, so how would you say …… I fell in love. I fell in love with a beautiful girl. I’m falling in love. Say,

Todo el mundo me quiere. un beso un pico un besito Dame un besito. un abrazo Abrázame. Dame un abrazo. Abrázame. una sonrisa Dame una sonrisa. enamorarse Me enamoro. Estoy enamorándome. Me enamoré. Me enamoré. Me enamoré con una muchacha hermosa.

I’m falling in love. ‘I’m falling in love’ option 1 and 2, please repeat…… Now say …… I fell in love. Now, how would you say, in the masculine, I am in love. I’m in love. (feminine form) Now let’s assume that cupid really hit you directly in the heart with a good arrow, and …… I’m very much in love. (masculine) I’m really in love. (masculine) I’m really in love. (feminine) I’m very much in love. (feminine form) I’m falling in love with you. (And this obviously has to be in the familiar form.) I’m falling in love with her. I’m falling in love with him. They’re falling in love. They’re in love. the lovers (physical) And this kind of refers to physical lovers, which I guess they all are. Or you could also say in a less physical way, ‘the in-love ones’, ‘the ones who are in love’, ‘the lovers’, more spiritual than physical. Now say …… You’re handsome. (masculine familiar) You’re beautiful. (feminine singular) The road of love is seldom a smooth one. How would

Me estoy enamorando / Estoy enamorándome. Me estoy enamorando / Estoy enamorándome. Me enamoré. Estoy enamorado. Estoy enamorada. Estoy muy enamorado. Estoy bien enamorado. Estoy bien enamorada. you say ……. Forgive me. (familiar) Lots of songs in Spanish with that title. Say …… Forgive me. I’m sorry. Eyes that don’t see, heart that doesn’t feel. Literally, Out of sight, out of mind. Love at a distance, all four are happy. to get engaged. He is engaged. Or we could even bunch them together and say …… Curiously enough, ‘novio’ and ‘novia’ can mean ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend’ But it’s not a frivolous relationship; ‘el novio’ would be a serious boyfriend and ‘la novia’ would be a serious girlfriend. serious boyfriend serious girlfriend So you kind of have to use it in context to know what it really means. Let’s go negative for a moment and learn how to say …… to get a divorce He is divorced. She is divorced. I am divorced. (masculine) I am divorced. (feminine) to have a date I have a date. tonight I have a date tonight. to stand someone up (masculine) to stand someone up (feminine) Okay, a girl’s talking and she says …… He stood me up. Listen and repeat …… He is flirting She is flirting male flirt female flirt He is a flirt. He is a big flirt. Here’s one of my favorites: ‘careful’, literally ‘eye’ …... Careful! Careful! She’s a big flirt. ‘Careful’ in this case literally means ‘eye’ as in e y e –lookout. Lookout! Lookout! He’s a big flirt. Now repeat these two side by side …… He’s a big flirt. / She’s a big flirt. We’ll do a couple here. But bear in mind, you’ll probably have to learn this when you go to the country. In Mexican Spanish you would say …… I have a hangover (masculine-ending in ‘o’) I have a hangover (feminine form-ending in ‘a’) to have a hangover - Colombia to have a hangover – Ecuador or Peru So there are lots of different variations. How would you say …… I don’t drink. or …… I don’t smoke. How would you say …… to have a disagreement to have a quarrel We ended it. We broke up. to cry

(familiar form) Am I pleasing to you? or, Do you like me? Do you like me a lot? Do you want o go out with me? How would you say …… I think you’re alright. I think he’s alright. / I think she’s alright. and… I really don’t think he’s alright. He rubs me the wrong way. / She rubs me the wrong way. a house We had kids. We are happy. Parting thoughts from Mark Frobose (audio minutes 2:10:29 – 2:12:04) Time is getting short, and I would like to leave you with a folk expression – an idiomatic expression – that perfectly states my philosophy on what is required to learn a foreign language: There is a price to be paid, and if that price is not paid the benefit is not received. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Literally…… He who flees from the cost flees from the benefit. The cost in learning how to speak and understand a foreign language is simple: You must continue to practice and review until you’re speaking and understanding your new language. Well, mis amigos and amigas – my friends – our first language experience together is now coming to a close. I hope we have many more. But your door to language opportunity is just beginning to open. Keep it open by continuing to review daily and enjoying your program every day. And as we say in Spanish: ¡Buena Suerte! Good Luck! Y que Dios le Bendiga. And may God bless. Adiós, amigos. I’ll see you in our next review. Language Audio Books Spanish for Love and Dating Copyright Mark Frobose 2012, All Right Reserved End of Audio Script – Spanish for Love and Dating
