SPAPSD: Student Services
Updates
June 2018
Strategic Plan and Moving Forward
● Mission, Vision, and Pillars
○ Fostering Student Engagement, Growth and Learning:
Improve student engagement and achievement in an
inclusive environment focused on literacy and the
development of the whole child
Behavioral &
Mental Health
Needs
WI Mental Health Needs Assessment
After review of behavior incidents, mental health occurrence,
and social emotional well-being of students, what do you feel is
working in your building related to prevention and intervention?
● Most staff are developing relationships with their students and are discussing and reinforcing positive behaviors. Teachers are improving with managing minor behaviors in the classroom. Staff are willing and eager to implement CICO for students who require it.
● SIP goals and meetings which focus on these items plus the dedication of the staff in this area
● teachers developing relationships with students; student services staff working with students in "crisis" and "at risk" , portions of PBIS , collaboration (to some extent) with outside agencies
In your opinion, what needs to be improved to increase student
social and emotional well-being in your school?
● Time for SW's and psychs to meet with students and groups (social skills, SAIG, lunch bunches, etc.), PD for staff to understand the needs of students and the function behind behaviors we are seeing in the building, understanding from central office of continuum of understanding in our buildings, current reality of district and respect of the efforts we have put in to support our teachers and students. Universal tools for supporting SEL needs within our classrooms.
● Consideration of adjusted roles/responsibilities to allow for more expansion of tier 2/3 SEL interventions, as well as time carved out for tier 1 SEL instruction
● Time-more opportunities for adults to connect with students (teachers are very scheduled and focused with curriculum and certainly do their best in building relationships but have limited time to extend the connections); review of student services duties or additional student services staff to allow more time for support groups and prevention activities- to allow student services the time to be proactive vs. reactive (i.e., preventative interventions at universal level vs. reactive "crisis" need )
● More curriculum and teaching of replacement behaviors. I think we still assume that students understand how they should be acting and choosing the "naughty" alternative.
