SPARK! Discovery Boxes

The Spark! Discovery Boxes are a series of themed science and discovery kits produced by Children’s Discovery Museum (CDM) in collaboration with Randwick City Council Libraries. The boxes are intended to enhance child, family and community access to age-appropriate, quality scientific equipment.

The boxes are designed for use by children aged 8 to 12 with adult supervision and participation expected.

Each box is designed to provide an authentic scientific experience. An activity guide sheet is provided to get users started. Some libraries use these boxes to run their own science club activities, others include them as part of their borrowing collection (e.g. expanding on their toy library offerings).

Ownership and management of the boxes is the responsibility of the library or community centre. Libraries are responsible for loaning the boxes to their community, managing returns, repairs and restocking as required. Children’s Discovery Museum can provide a list of suppliers for each item. On occasion CDM can order replacement items on behalf of the library.

Additional resources may be added to each box by the library. These may include reference books, CDs, DVDs etc.

All activity guides are provided in soft-copy so that libraries can update, add logos, etc.
