Criteria for Selecting Eighth Grade Algebra I Students A seventh grade student qualifies to enroll in Algebra I in the eighth grade if he/she meets 4 of 5 of the following criteria.

1. Receives a score of IV on the math portion of the Alabama Reading and Math Test (ARMT-6th grade).

2. A math average of 90% in 7th grade math. The average will be determined by

computing the first three nine-week grades. 3. A minimum score of 90% on the Orleans Hanna Algebra Diagnostic Test (third

edition) using straight scoring (45 out of 50). 4. A minimum of 82% on the Madison County Algebra I Pre-test without the use of

a calculator. 5. A teacher recommendation that addresses the student’s study habits, work habits,

and their consistency in completing homework. If the student meets 4 of the 5 criteria, parental permission is required to place the student in Algebra I. Students who meet 3 of the 5 criteria may be enrolled in Algebra I on an individual basis if the principal determines that Algebra is the most appropriate placement. Parental permission is required to place the student in Algebra I. Transfer students will be evaluated on an individual basis for placement. Students enrolled in Algebra I in the eighth grade: 1. will follow the Alabama Course of Study for Algebra I, 2. will use the high school Algebra I textbook, 3. will not receive a high school Carnegie unit, and 4. will be required to complete 4 math Carnegie units in high school. Students who successfully complete Algebra I in the eighth grade will have the option of enrolling in Geometry or repeating Algebra I in the ninth grade.
