A beautiful group
of young ladies
participated in the
Miss Saraland Middle
School pageant on
February 2nd, and all
of them showed grace,
beauty, and poise.
Congratulations to
the sixth grade
beauties, Genna Myers
and Callie Grace
Allen. “When they
called my name out, I was
very excited! It was a lot
of fun with my friends,”
said Genna Myers, who
also received the award
for Miss Photogenic. Miss
Congeniality was Allie
Sayasane.
Our seventh grade
beauties were Madi Wade
and Cassidy McDonald.
Madi Wade said, “I will
remember my seventh
grade pageant, not
because I won, but for all
the fun I had with the
girls and fundraising!”
Miss Cassidy
McDonald reminded us of
how much confidence and
practice is required to do
well in this line of
competition. She said, “I
was kind of nervous at
first, but once I got on
stage I forgot all about it.”
Also, kudos to Taylor
Cox, seventh grade Miss
Congeniality, and Lacie
Domingue, seventh grade
Miss Photogenic.
Finally, a big
congratulations to Miss
SMS, Logan Carter, who
was very appreciative of
the chance to represent
Saraland Middle School
and considered it a
privilege to be named
Miss SMS.
“I have little girls
looking up to me and I am
a leader for the school… I
am so proud and
honored.” Hannah Koger
was the second runner up
and Hannah Mceachern
was first runner up.
Madilyn Watson won
Miss Congeniality and
Savannah Zellers was
named Miss Photogenic.
The Saraland Middle
School Pageant was a
great way for all of the
ladies to express
themselves and also to
show their inner beauty. It
isn’t all about winning but
the fact that they tried.
Congratulations to all
of the Divas who
participated in the 2013
SMS Pageant!

The Spartan Baseball team is made
of talented players. The players have to
have a lot of dedication to their team.
They have hard workouts and long
practices almost every day.
Assistant Coach Pierce feels the
team will have a respectable record this
year.
“Our returning eighth graders are
stronger,” he said. “They have great
arms, great speed, and they really step
up to show the younger players what
they should be doing and to encourage
them.”
As his first year with Saraland, Coach
Pierce has been impressed with the
team’s work ethic and their unity.
“We have a lot of leadership,” Coach
Pierce said. “There are never any
arguments on the field.”
Coach Pierce is very optimistic about
this year’s team and feels they will have a
good season.
“All of our outfielders can make it from
the fence to the home plate in one throw,” he
said. “We have great arms in our outfield
and great gloves in our infield.”
Congrats to the players who made the
team: Justin Farmer, Oliver Richardson,
Austin Hicks, Hunter Tangle, Tyler
Soccer is not just a sport, it is also a
great way to meet friends.
“My position is right-mid fielder,”
said Maranda Hill. “I like this position
because I get the ball a lot and get to
run. I also get nervous when the ball is
coming to me because all the pressure
is on me!”

The girls’ soccer team has worked
super hard this year and never stops
practicing. The girls practice everyday
after school at the high school until five
o’clock.
“My favorite part of being on the
team is it makes me closer to all the
girls in middle and high school,” said
Savannah Fendley.
little bit of pressure, but the girls say
they still love it.
“Playing with high school girls
makes you feel a little small, but we
have someone to look up to,” said
Savannah Fendley.
There are three girls on the high
school team that are eighth graders:
Savannah Fendley, Maranda Hill, and
Jennah Lee.

Strutting your stuff wasn’t just for the ladies as 22
lucky guys found out while serving as pageant escorts.
The gentleman selected for this honor had the privilege
of dining with the ladies over a fine lunch. They then
escorted the contestants on stage and even got a chance to
show off their own dance moves in their uniquely
choreographed routine to the song, “Don’t Stop the Party.”
Blake Morrison was crowned Mr. SMS after a secret
ballot vote by the contestants. He said he was glad he
decided to be a pageant escort and would highly
recommend the experience to next year’s group of eighth
grade guys.
“We met about five times to learn parts of the dance
and we had to learn how to waltz. We were assigned a
partner based on height. We had to pull out a chair for the
ladies at the tea,” Blake said of his experience. “My
favorite part was definitely our dance, making it special for
the ladies and making everyone laugh.”
On the evening of the big event, the escorts made sure
they looked their best in their tuxedos and then stayed busy
seating the audience before the show. They also had to
escort the contestants out and waltz with the ladies as well
as show off a few of their own dance moves.
Blake was surprised to be crowned Mr. SMS at the end
of the special evening. “I was shocked and excited when I
heard my name,” he said. “ It was adrenaline, I guess.”
Blake was awarded a $30 gift card to Academy and a
crown, which is on his dresser.

The pageant
isn’t just a bunch
of pretty girls
walking on a
stage. Every
grade level of
contestants
participated in
charity work.
The sixth
grade contestants prepared a meal
for the Saraland Firefighters.
Sixth grade contestant Callie
Grace Allen said of the meal, “It
was good because now the firefighters
have something to really remember!”
Our entire school raised $835.98 for
the Saraland Animal Shelter thanks to
the seventh grade pageant girls! This
money will be used to buy food and
supplies for the animals.
The uniform drive, led by the eighth
grade contestants, replenished our
uniform closet for our school with over
100 uniform items.
Not only did the pageant benefit
these areas, but it also raised money for
our school’s general funds.
Overall, the SMS Pageant did a lot
of good in the community.
For guys considering being an escort next year, Blake has
these words of advice, “Be yourself, have fun, and remember
it’s for the girls.”

Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Dixon’s eighth
grade classes sparked creativity when
they made their balloon racers. They
were required to create an original
racecar powered by a balloon. Students
were encouraged to use multiple
materials to create their car. The project
required lots of thought and
experimenting. It also took a great
amount of effort.
The students had to follow
multiple rules: the car must be powered
by no more than 2 balloons, must have
