If you cannot intend to have a good talk, then you should remain silent and that i s good by itself. This is because the Prophet (S.A.W.) says reported by Imam Bukhar i and Muslim, "Whosoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him say good or remain silent." Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet said: ³A man may utter a word pleasing to Allaah without considering it of any significance, but for which Allaah elevates his ranks (in Paradise); another one may speak a word displeasing to Allaah without considering it of any importance, but for which he would be plummeted into Hell.´ [Al-Bukhaari] Bilaal Ibn Al-Haarith Al-Muzani reported that the Messenger of Allaah said: ³A man may speak a good word without knowing its worth, for which Allaah records for him His good pleasure until the Day he will meet Him; another man may utter an evil word without realising its importance, for which Allaah records for him His displeasure until the Day he will meet Him.´ [Maalik & At-Tirmithi] Hell and are thus a main cause of gaining entry into Paradise. The Prophet also said: ³In Paradise are rooms, the inside of which can be seen from the outside, and the outside of which can be seen from the inside. Allaah has prepared them for those who offer food (to the needy), are soft in speech, who frequently fast, and who pray at night while the people are asleep.´ [Al-Bayhaqi & Al-Haakim] Lowering one's voice: Allaah Says (what means): ³«And lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.´ The Prophet (s.a.w) said :  You must speak the truth for the truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise. One who always speaks the truth and means the truth is recorded as truthful with Allah. Keep away from the lies, for the one who continually tells a lie leads to evil and evil leads to Hell-fire [Al- Bukhari & Muslim] From the Quran, Luqman advices his son:

(Son) and be moderate in thy pace, and lower your voice, for the harshest of sounds without doubt isthe braying of the donkey [Luqman 31:19]

*Imaam Maalik Rehmatullahi ·Alaih narrates that Hadhrat Eesaa alayhissalaam said: "Do not speak in abundance for your heart will be hardened." In

other words, fear and humility will be eliminated from the heart.Experience confirms this fact.

We have been warned by the Holy Prophet in an equally forceful manneragainst the curse of bad manners. He has said:³A man with bad manners and a bad moral conduct shall not enterParadise.´³No sin is more detestable to God than bad manners.´

Quran declares:Speak fair to the People. (II: 83)We have it from the Prophet that:³To speak politely is piety and a kind of charity.´

³And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the mostdisagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys« But of the people is he whodisputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlighteningBook.´ (Qur¶an, 31:19-20)

Ibn µAbbas (ra) narrated, the Messenger of Allah said, ³And when you get angry,keep silent.´ (Ahmad, Ibn Abi Dunya, al-Tabarani, and al-Bayhaqi)

A nomad said to the Messenger of Allah ³Advise me.´ And he said, ³If a mandefamed you with what he knows about you, do not defame him with what youknow about him. For the sin is against him.´ The nomad said, ³I never abused any person after that.´

Al-Hasan (ra) said, ³He that did not safeguard his tongue did not understand hisreligion.´

The Messenger of Allah said , ³Kind speech and feeding (the hungry) guarantee you Paradise.´ (al-Tabarani) 2. ³And speak nicely to people.´ (Qur¶an, 2:83)

Anas (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, ³ Verily there are chambersin Paradise; their insides and outsides can be seen ± for him who spoke kindly andfed (the hungry).´ (al-Tirmidhi)
