In April, SCAN relocated to a new office space at 205 S. Whiting Street in Alexandria, which includes a larger conference room. That room

has been renamed the Carol Cleary Community Training Room in memory of Carol Cleary, wife of SCAN founder Dave Cleary. This new space gives us the capacity to train more people, to protect more children, and to impact an even wider circle of our community. Darkness to Light trainings, CASA volunteer trainings and new volunteer orientations will all occur (and have the chance to grow!) in this space. Many thanks to those who donated at the open house and online during Spring2Action to support the new training room!

SCAN hosted a sunshine- and smile-filled Croquet Day on May 30, raising more than $30,000 to support SCAN’s child abuse prevention programs in the coming year. With support from lead sponsors Marc & Leana Katz, AT&T, Safeway and SCAN founder Dave Cleary, over one hundred players, guests and volunteers enjoyed an official croquet tournament,

lawn games, food and more at Hensley Park in Alexandria. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible!

PARENTING CLASS GRADUATESCongratulations to the 24 parents who graduated from our ABCs of Parenting Classes (offered in both English and Spanish) this Spring. We are so proud of you and thrilled for your children and families!

Update from the ParentEducation Program:

Dear Friends,

June marked the end of our program year. The year’s end always brings with it a tremendous sense of accomplishment. We served nearly 300 families through one or more of the 16 educational projects. From our evaluations we found that over 94% of parents felt they learned a new parenting strategy. They also noted feeling more connected to other parents.

This sense of accomplishment is wonderful, but we can’t help but feel a tremendous sense of GRATITUDE. The Parent Education team counts on a staff of two, and none of these accomplishments could have been possible without the support of our interns, volunteers and community partners.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life with a variety of skills. It was great to look back and see how each contribution helped shape and ultimately make SCAN’s Parent Education Program a success. For example, our friends from Deloitte stopped by on Impact Day (June 5) and taught us how to best use MS Access for our program data evaluation. For a Parenting Class series, Nancy Broff and her very talented team from Virginia Cooperative Extension provided cooking classes and healthy meals.

In addition to local businesses volunteering, 26 individuals donated 550 hours of their time. Some have been long time volunteers like Mary Louise Cohen and Candice Radoski, who facilitated ABCs of Parenting, while others joined SCAN only a few months ago. I invite you to visit our blog (scanofnova.wordpress.com) to read a post about new volunteer Lainie Morgan’s experience working with children and their unexpected impact on her.

To all our volunteers—you are the heart of SCAN and we thank you for all that you do! We look forward to seeing you in the fall!

If you have not had a chance to volunteer, please come out to our next volunteer orientation to learn more about the Parent Education Program and how you can make a unique contribution. Whatever time or skills you have to share, we hope you will come join us!

Update on the Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program:

Welcome to our Spring 2015 CASA Volunteer Class (pictured L to R at swearing-in ceremony): Paula Hayes, Bruce Neuling, Yeosang “Emily” Leary, Jacquelyn Jenks, Fernanda Howard, Denise Nazaire, Cynthia Mercer, Alexandra Clement, Pamela “Rana” Stewart, Phyllis Bailey, Nikkia Blackburn and Shawna Garrison.

Welcome New CASA Volunteers! Our newest advocates for children took the CASA oath on

April 14th, based on their passion for and dedication to providing a voice for the most vulnerable children involved with the Juvenile Court System. The Spring 2015 CASA class consisted of 12 volunteers from various walks of life, including a medical professional, attorneys, human services professionals and government workers. These highly qualified, motivated, multicultural and multilingual members of our community have taken on the mission of advocating for children by promoting safe and stable environments where they will no longer be subjected to abuse and neglect. During six weeks of intensive training, it was apparent that they were all passionate, capable and willing to give of their time and skills to ensure the children to whom they would be appointed would have a voice throughout the court process. We are proud to announce that almost all of these CASAs have already taken their first cases and are off to a great start!

Dear Friends,

The Alexandria/Arlington CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Program continues to provide a voice for children involved in the Alexandria and Arlington Juvenile Court Systems. Our CASA volunteers strive to make certain the voices of abused and neglected children are heard in an over-burdened child welfare system. Since July 1, 2014, the CASA program has served 191 children. 82 CASA volunteers have served and provided advocacy for services to enhance the future safety and wellbeing of children involved in the system.

The CASA program continues to grow and evolve: I joined the staff as the new CASA Program Mananger, and we welcomed 12 new CASA volunteers in April. We also have a new bilingual CASA Case Supervisor. Please welcome Liza Almo to the SCAN/CASA family!

The program continues to focus on recruitment of multicultural and multilingual volunteers to meet the needs of or culturally diverse population. CASA has an ongoing need for volunteers as we face rapid growth in the number of abused children in need of an advocate.

I am pleased to announce that CASA will celebrate 30 years of providing services to at-risk youth throughout the state of Virginia. The first CASA program was established 30 years ago and Virginia passed the first legislation for the CASA program 25 years ago. The governor plans to sign a proclamation and there will be a celebration of this accomplishment shared by CASA programs across the Commonwealth.

I am excited to be the leader of such an amazing program and to have the opportunity to work with a such a skilled and professional team of volunteers and staff members who share my passion for serving at-risk youth in our community. Thank you for the warm welcome and your support and

understanding as I learn my new role. The CASA program will continue to strive for improvement in our service quality and growth to advocate for more children.

LaTeeka TurnerCASA Program Manager

GOOD NEWS FOR CASA & KIDS:SCAN’s Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program was selected to partner in an ongoing collaborative effort sponsored through the Alexandria Juvenile Court Best Practices Team. We’ll help to develop policies and procedures that ensure all partners are working together effectively to improve the overall effectiveness of the Juvenile Court process. The team will

sponsor a training event around Alexandria’s “System of Care,” an opportunity for representatives from child welfare, Comprehensive Services Act, mental health, advocates, probation officers and educational staff to discuss youth in the city. CASA will be present to assist in identifying strengths, gaps in services and potential opportunities from our perspective as child advocates.

Update from the PublicEducation Program:

Dear Friends,

Many times, I am asked what Public Education means at SCAN. Simply put, Public Education is teaching everyone what their role is in reducing child abuse and neglect. And having just come off of Child Abuse Prevention Month (April, of course), our progress can best be seen through numbers:

- 525 adults reached through various trainings (including Darkness to Light and selections from our Fee for Service offerings) FY 2014

- 1,109 “Likes” on Facebook

- 799 Twitter followers on two different Twitter accounts

- 559 Connections Blog post views

- 9,981 unique visitors to our website

I do not end up with some of the moving stories that the CASA and Parent Education Programs get, but Public Education is the recipient of many “aha” moments. Those moments come because we are finding new, creative, and innovative ways to reach the public. These “aha” moments include parents who realize it is their responsibility to protect their children from child sexual abuse, from professionals who learn new ways to reach children by using activities with intention, teen moms who learn why a baby must be put to sleep on their back, and community members who learn that the symbol for child abuse prevention is no longer the blue ribbon, but rather the pinwheel.

I will take numbers and “aha” moments any day because I know that it all adds up to a reduction in child abuse and neglect andmore connections for kids.

NEW INITIATIVE: Operation Safe BabiesWith support from CareFirst and the Potomac Health

Foundation, and through a partnership with Cribs for Kids, SCAN is thrilled to be coordinating a new initative known as

Operation Safe Babies. The program focuses on educating new parents about safe sleep for infants, providing cribs for families in need and delivering resources for families and babies across Northern Virginia.

Through the assistance of community partner organizations like Inova Hospital, local health departments and various Healthy Families programs, SCAN will provide hundreds of infants with safe cribs. In addition to the cribs, SCAN and its community partner organizations will also provide parents of infants with specially developed educational materials and resources on Safe Sleep and Abusive Head Trauma. SCAN

has developed a “Safe Baby” pledge card, crying plan, refrigerator magnet and new fact sheets in both English and Spanish to be used with parents of infants.

If you are interested in hosting a training or learning more about the program, please contact Public Education Manager Tracy Leonard at 703-820-9001 or [email protected].

SCAN Hosts Faith SummitOn June 5th, SCAN and George Mason University’s

School of Social Work hosted Mobilizing Connections to Strengthen Families, a special dialogue between faith groups and human services organizations to discuss how to work together to keep children safe and support families. Speakers included Dr. Joseph Henderson, Bishop and Senior Pastor at Kingdom Family Worship Center in Fredericksburg, Va., and Doug Brown, acting director of CPS for the City of Alexandria.

“Without connectivity between faith groups and social services, you can throw resources at the problem but they won’t be received,” said Dr. Joseph Henderson. “When you bring faith groups and human services together, they both become stronger.”

Nearly 50 participants from a wide variety of faith and human services organizations broke into small groups for intimate discussions about the value of and challenges in building connections between the faith community and service agencies. We are thrilled at SCAN to have opened this dialogue among so many new contacts, and hope to continue the discussion -- and inspire action -- that will ultimately help more children and families in our community!

SCAN offers child sexual abuse prevention trainings and a variety of workshops that can be tailored for faith groups. Learn about all of our resources for faith groups by visiting www.scanva.org and searching for “faith-based groups.”

LaTEEKA TURNER joined SCAN in February as our new CASA Program Manager (replacing Diamond Vann) and led the staff and 12 new CASA volunteers through a new course of pre-service training. LaTeeka worked at Alexandria City social services in the CPS unit for 4 years as well as Fairfax County CPS, so she brings solid knowledge about local CPS policy, court procedures, and sensitivity to the issues our families face.

LIZA ALMO joined SCAN in April as our new Part-time Bilingual CASA Case Supervisor (replacing Delmira Morales who left after 4 years of service across all of SCAN’s programs). An attorney, Liza has also served as a volunteer coordinator, and volunteered with a family literacy program for immigrant families at her daughter’s school.

CANDICE LOPEZ joined SCAN’s Board of Directors in June. Candice is the director of the National Sexual Assault hotline for the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network, directly supervising bilingual program managers and supporting their teams of 200 individuals. She has a background in nonprofit management and a master of Public Administration with a concentration in nonprofit management from George Mason University.

CONGRESSMAN DON BEYER has returned to SCAN’s Honorary Board. The congressman and his wife resigned from the Honorary Board when he was appointed Ambassador but have reconnected since his election to represent the 8th District of Virginia in the House of Representatives.

Circle of Hope Celebration

SCAN Board Member Tim Gale and his wife Jennifer Gale opened their Alexandria home for a reception on May 15 to present Hon. Jim

Moran with the 2015 Cleary Award. The evening also celebrated SCAN’s Circle of Hope, a group of committed donors who each give more than $1,000 every year to provide critical support for SCAN’s child abuse prevention programs.

Congressman Moran represented the Eighth Congressional District for 23 years, serving as a committed spokesperson for child abuse prevention and as an Honorary SCAN Board Member for more than a decade. We were also honored to welcome Congressman Don Beyer, who graciously agreed to return to SCAN’s Honorary Board this year.

SCAN was pleased to meet new “friends” at the reception while also connecting with long-time supporters, including major donors Leana and Marc Katz. Leana delivered deeply moving remarks about her experience as both a donor and a CASA volunteer for more than eight years. She noted the stark contrast between advocating for abused and neglected children in the court and raising her own children:

“No child decides where they get to be born but every child deserves to have parents who have the tools to be their best parenting selves, a public who has the awareness to support them, and when things go terribly wrong, a mentally sound, determined individual in their corner advocating just for them.”

To learn more about Circle of Hope, please contact SCAN at [email protected] or 703-820-9001.

Congressman Moran Honored for Support of SCAN
