PERSPECTIVES

Be of service to the peopleSunday, 1 April, 2012

“Leave your pride and luxury at your home.” Theplacard is very common at most of buses in Myanmar. It is second only to the phrase, “Please don’t ask time,”as Myanmar drivers have long believed telling time toa passenger may lengthen the trip. But I do notunderstand why they do not prefer to let passengers’feelings and indulgence enter the doors of their buses.

For years, Myanmar people were quite a strangerto service industry. And they are naturallyunproblematic. They will never express rage if thetrain is half a day late or if electricity cut lasts a week. They are too contented. Less than a decade, someentrepreneurs have chosen to add the word “service”at signboards of their businesses. But, do the peoplereally access the comprehensive services yet?

An internet cafe in Yangon will still ask you to pulloff your footwear outside the door. A teashop waiterwill still ask you, “Are you going to pay bill, Sir?” if youhave spent over half an hour there. A salesgirl ofsupermarket will still tail you with suspicion. With orwithout the placard, it is sure that they could notguarantee the quality customer services. They areseemed to be more determined to require customers toadapt to their services, rather than adjusting theirservices to consumers. Don’t they really know thatcustomer is always right?

Now, the government is committed to provideadequate public services. It is made clear in eachspeech of the President. A series of reforms in theservice sector is tangible.

The service industry is seemed to become morelively in the country. Unfortunately, it still shows somedisregard of consumers’ feelings. However good wecould produce a goods, if with poor services, it wouldbe undervalued. Have a heart, the service industry!

Both drone strikes are understood to have beenconducted as part of a long-running campaign intended to killand disrupt al-Qaeda using missile-firing drones operated bythe Central Intelligence Agency, which declines comment onsuch operations. US officials cited the latest drone attacks asa refutation of recent news reports suggesting the UnitedStates was curtailing drone operations.

One report, which US officials denied, said that earlierthis year, the United States had offered a suspension of droneattacks in Pakistan in connection with efforts to improvestrained bilateral relations. Scientists warn of‘emergency on global scale’PARIS, 31 March — Leading scientists on Thursday

called on the upcoming Rio Summit to grapple withenvironmental ills that they said pointed to “a humanitarianemergency on a global scale.” In a “State of the Planet”declaration issued after a four-day conference, the scientistssaid Earth was now facing unprecedented challenges, fromwater stress, pollution and species loss to spiralling demandsfor food. They called on the June 20-22 followup to the 1992Earth Summit to overhaul governance of the environment andsweep away a fixation with GDP as the sole barometer ofwellbeing.

“The continuing function of the Earth system as it hassupported the wellbeing of human civilisation in recentcenturies is at risk,” said the statement issued at the “PlanetUnder Pressure” conference. “These threats risk intensifyingeconomic, ecological and social crises, creating the potentialfor a humanitarian emergency on a global scale.” Theconference gathered nearly 3,000 environment scientists, economists, business executives and policymakers in therunup to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development inRio.

In a recorded message, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he welcomed the declaration, saying “its timing...

could not be better.” “Climate change, the financial crisis andfood, water and energy security threaten human wellbeingand civilisation as we know it,” he said. Ban added that he wasconsidering appointing a scientific board or a chief scientificadvisor to advise him and other UN organs. The conferencedeclaration said humanity’s impact on Earth was now so greatthat a new era — “the Anthropocene,” a term derived from theGreek word for human — had emerged. Warm, comfy mice makebetter lab specimens

LONDON, 31 March — Scientists hope to make micecomfier in their lab homes, not just to boost the rodents’ well-being but also to make them more humanlike and better modelsfor drug studies. The problem, they say, is that mice kept inlabs for medical studies are typically cold, and the resultingstress can change the physiology of the animal. The resultmay be one reason why nine out of 10 drugs that seem to workin lab mice and other animal models ultimately fail to work inhumans, the researchers add.

“If you want to design a drug that will help a patient in thehospital, you cannot reasonably do that in animals that arecold-stressed and are compensating with an elevated metabolicrate,” Joseph Garner, associate professor of comparativemedicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, said ina statement. “This will change all aspects of their physiology, such as how fast the liver breaks down a drug, which can’t helpbut increase the chance that a drug will behave differently inmice and in humans.” The solution may be easy: just providethe mice with nesting materials.

Hundreds of millions of mice populate the world’slaboratories, according to Garner who calls the rodents “one ofthe most fantastic animals on Earth.” Mice prefer somewhattoasty temperatures, between 86 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (30and 32 degrees Celsius), though US research laboratories areoften kept at chillier temperatures to abide by federal regulations— around 68-75 F (20-24 C). The cold temperatures can suppressunmanageably aggressive behaviors in mice; also female miceare better at lactating in cooler temperatures.

On the down side, when housed in temperatures of 64-68F (18-20 C), mice may show changes in their immune systemsas well as a slowing of growth. Many labs’ current chill factor,as such, is “right at that threshold,” Garner pointed out. “Thatmeans the mice may be compromised physiologically, potentiallyaffecting research results.”— Internet

The Girls Around Me app:Creepy, dangerous, and a

good reminder to update yourprivacy settings

NEW YORK , 31 March — It was only a matter of time. Cultof Mac has pointed out this incredibly creepy app, GirlsAround Me, which as you might imagine, takes social networkcheck-ins and a user’s personal GPS data to locate andbroadcast all the surrounding women (and men – althoughthat is not the app’s advertised purpose or generating as muchhype) in a given area.

From the minute someone coined the term “SoLoMo”(which is at once the quickest and most gag-inducing way toidentify this market), our collective privacy fears were piqued. These apps, though opt-in, could be dangerous. But really,it’s been a bunch of “could-be’s” — someone could use thisapp to find you or someone could unwittingly be broadcastingan embarrassing location. For the most part, however, it’sbeen a lot of hypothetical situations. Apps like Highlight,Glancee, and Banjo have spent tons of time talking aboutprivacy and safety in the wake of these concerns. Theyemphasize how you willingly opt-in to using them and featuresthat allow you to pause location recording. But make nomistake, Girls Around Me has no concern for privacy.

The app takes public check-ins and Facebook profilesand displays a girl’s photo via Google Maps, so you knowexactly where she is. You can then access her Facebook profileand peruse whatever is publicly visible. You might be quickto dismiss this as women who haven’t so much as glanced atprivacy settings that are getting suckered, but the app alsotakes into account when others check you in somewhere viaFacebook. Foursquare, for the record, pulled API access fromGirls Around Me in response to Cult of Mac’s story.

Really, Girls Around Me is just proving what we all knewcould happen when the power of social and location app APIscombine: people get weird and make a lot of us reallyuncomfortable. —Internet

Nokia and Apple squabblesdelay Sim card ruling

PARIS, 31 March — A decision regarding the next formatfor mobile Sim cards has been delayed after negotiations overpatents ground to a halt, French media has reported. Appleand Nokia, along with other manufacturers, are locked indispute over proposals for a new “nano-Sim”. Nokia hasthreatened to withhold crucial patents if Apple’s proposal isadopted, arguing that it does not comply with requiredspecifications. The ruling has been postponed until the endof June. All firms want to secure the new format to keep up withdevices which are getting ever smaller and slimmer.

The nano-Sim will be at least a third smaller than the micro-Sim commonly found in today’s smartphones. The EuropeanTelecommunications Standards Institute (Etsi) is the bodyresponsible for setting the global standard for the format. Bypolling its membership —which consists of telecoms providersand manufacturers — it aims to reach a consensus over theideal standards for future technologies. However, views overwhich nano-Sim should be adopted have divided the industry,

Preservation, Participation and Promotion of PublicAwareness on ICH in Myanmar

Nanda Hmun, Ministry of Culture

(Continued fromyesterday)

Efforts made by Ministryof Culture

The focal ministry to beassigned is Ministry ofCulture and mobilization ofimplementation ofsafeguarding measuresultimately lies with thepeople of Myanmar. Withthe assigned mandates, Min-istry of Culture nominatedthe Focal Points for CulturalHeritage and Natural herit-age as contacts for UNESCOand also formed the Com-mittee to carry out ICH Pres-ervation and Compilation. It is also meant to showcasethe diversity of intangiblecultural heritage manifesta-tions at national level andthen to inscribe on the Rep-resentative List of the Intan-gible Cultural Heritage ofHumanity. It is now prepar-ing those elements which arein need of urgent safeguard-ing too. As this ministrywhich focuses on safeguard-ing Myanmar culturalheritage and has a Aims andObjectives of: “To explore, preserve, sustain anddisseminate all forms ofMyanmar cultural heritage, and to nurture youngergeneration to be well-behaved and safeguardcultural heritages.” Mostcultural elements under TCHand ICH are under its nationalmechanism functions butstill awareness raising of thethreats to TCH and ICH,heritage impacts assessment, climate change factors andpreparation of disaster riskmanagement, providingoverseas trainingopportunities and ensuringof the adequate allocation of

budget are still underconstraint. Within itscapacity, all staff at differentlevels are enduringcontribution to its Vision: Tofulfill the social objectives ofthe state by implementingcultural activities such aspreserving, exposing andpropagating Myanmarcultural heritage towards thedemocratic state”

Since cultural processesare dynamic and everchanging, there is a bigchallenge to overcome alltypes of cultural preservationand safeguarding with ourown strength. Implementingthe policy on Myanmarcultural heritage preservationlaid down by the governingbody. Ministry of Culture isundertaking the safeguardingand awareness raising of ICHby establishing culturalmuseums in capitals ofrespective states anddivisions, schools anduniversities of arts to sustainMyanmar cultural heritage;preserving the customs andtraditions of Myanmarnational races by recordingthe information and data fromfield works anddocumentation; HoldingPerforming ArtsCompetitions at State levelfor bringing about newgenerations capable forpreserving and promotingcultural heritage and nationalcharacter.

For TCH which is clearlystated in its Aims andObjectives, Ministry ofCulture carries outimplementing the policy onMyanmar cultural heritagepreservation laid down by thegoverning body;establishing of the Central

Committee for MyanmarCultural HeritagePreservation, Restoration andConservation; preserving thesites and monuments inarcheological zonesundertaken by the Annualgovernment budget;recording the informationand data from field works anddocumentation of thecustoms and traditions ofMyanmar national races.

Implementing thenational policies on culture,we are also committed toexplore more pragmatic waysto expand global footprint ofMyanmar culture and itsdelicacies accompanied withremarkable blend of not onlyperforming and visual arts butalso our traditional ways andmanners including those ICHheritages. With those impact

of globalization, preservationand promotion of culturalidentity is necessary for thecountry like Myanmar. Themulticultural society isreaching us in manyperspectives and along withthis shifting social context, our living traditions and assetsare to be undertaken with highattention. Towards thoseemergence of safeguardingICH, it calls for creating moreopportunities to participateand promote publicawareness. The prudencebetween visions and realitieswill be covered with effectiveefforts which will bechallenges for new and oldgenerations.Traditional Assets: ICH ofMyanmar

In the memories of everyMyanmar, understandingand patience, engaging andcreating, modern andtraditional ways and meanswill enable all of us to sharethe legacy of Myanmarculture. The account of manyMyanmar traditionalseasonal festivals and thosein-house practice handeddown by our ancestors arestill harmony with our dailylife. We all fondly recall ourmemories which we took partin our childhood, teens, withfull spirit like thosetraditional games we played, and those bedtime storiesretold by our grandparents, elderly people and parents,

have been still remain inour hearts. Those nurseryrhymes and verses whichwe used to recite aloud arestill in our memory banks.Story telling is the effectiveteaching method not onlyto be applied for thesubjects like History,English and Myanmarlanguage but alsoconducting moral ethicswhich can easily adaptedby most school going ages.We have to reintroduce theStorytelling to be put intothe Curriculum for Primaryand Middle Schools. Soalso the Traditional Gamesof Myanmar to encourageour children in Myanmarto continue practicingtraditional activities asthey can help them todevelop their creativity, physical skills and moreimportant, their moral andmentalibilities.

The Traditional Game“Chinlon” ( cane-ball) isone of the unique gamesamong all and that is highlyattractive game for manyforeigners which can beplayed by single and in agroup. This kind oftraditional game has a longhistory in Myanmar and itis noted that it has beenplayed since in the reigns ofMyanmar kings. By thoserecords of ReverendSangermano from Italy whocame to Inwa Nay Pyi Taw in

Myanmar for missionary inthe year 1782, wrote abouthis account on the gameplayed by cane-ball. Withthose beautiful techniquesand lively movements andthose terminologies relatedto “Chinlon” are veryinteresting and like a livingtradition which is still beingplayed in all parts ofMyanmar among all walksof life.

Another memorableICH is unique way of rowingthe traditional boats withlegs in Inle Lake. Thosepeople inhabiting in InleLakes and its surroundings, used to travel from one placeto another by means of boatspaddled in this way is one ofthe ICH regional values. There is one famous festivaltoo: “Festival of Phaung-daw-Oo Images” in whichall racing boats which canbe rowed by hundred rowerswith that unique way ofrowing serve as tug boatstowing the ceremonialKaraweik Barge on whichthe images are put/tem-porarily placed forobeisance. In Inlay, anothersignificance of this region isthe famous weaving of LotusRobe, woven from the stemsof padonmar lotus. Thelegacy of this workingprocess can be seen only inInle lake of Shan state. It isnoted that to have a robe or

(from page 6)thin-gan (worn byBuddhist monks), 220, 000stems of lotus are required. Then the fibres are extractedfrom the stems to be joinedfor making a thread forweaving purposes. It takesabout a month to be finishedand its is highly appreciatedfor its rareness and delicatehand-made.

Putting the traditional“Thanakha” or refreshingpaste obtained fromgrinding a piece ofThanakha (Limoniaacidissima) on the grindingstone ( kyauk pyin) is a dailyfoundation used by everyMyanmar woman. With itssweet scent , making cooland soothing, the“thanakha” is a symbol ofMyanmar. There are manyMyanmar songs composedon “Thanakha” and thebeauty of woman who putson. The traditional way ofputting “Thanakha” is akind of legacy that everyMyanmar has to sustain.

Myanmar playthingslike “pyit-taing-htaung”( tumbling Kelly) , those toysmade of papier-mache indifferent sizes for variouskinds of animals likeelephant, tiger, horse, zebra, cow, etc. traditionalMyanmar kites, paperhelmet (helmet which wereworn by warriors) widelyknown as Bandoola helmet, painted wooden longswords, earthernwareminiature cooking utensilsand other kitchen ware(favourite for girls) , playingwith pebbles (or tamarind

seeds) as indoor games, themasks of tigers, monkeys, ogres, kings, miniaturewooden furniture, woodentop, etc. are being listed underplaythings. However, therecognition and its popularityis fading and instead childrenfrom urban areas know onlyPower Rangers, Baby dolls, those swords used by someChinese actors in their martialarts pictures.

Another breathtakingprocess is the production ofGold Leaf foils (shwe-zain),one of the remarkable arts andcrafts of Mandalay. This kindof beating the gold into foiland marketing it, has takenplace in one particular placein Mandalay and makeknown to its dwellers as “myetpa: yat”. The tradition ofoffering to the scared Buddhaimages, religious buildingsand shrines with gold leafwhich is so thin and light hasbeen handed down from thedays of monarchy. It is one ofthe well-known arts and craftsof Mandalay, where the heartof Myanmar cultural heritagelies.

In the field of Fine Arts, one of the unique and mostmelodious musicalinstruments is Myanmar Harpwhich is one of the oldestknown musical instruments. It is a boat-shaped woodeninstrument, highly decorated, and sometimes gilded. It canhave 7, 9, 13 or 16 strings. Themelody which is produced byMyanmar Harp is sooutstanding and there has beenstory on the playing of Harpwhich made the fighting oftwo great creatures to end up

in our chronicles. Anothermusic assemble, which is themost unique is “Saing-waing”(Myanmar musicorchestra). The grandeur of itsresemblance and themelodious traditional musicthat comes out by striking thoseseries of (pat-lone) drums ofdifferent sizes, is the musicwhich all Myanmar enjoy andproud of. There is no such kindof music assembly in this worldand those traditional ways tofollow while it is to beperformed. The anothersignificance is the “ pat-sar ” ortuning dough, paste of ricekneaded with wood ash usedfor tuning those drums”magically.

“Yote–thay” orMyanmar marionettes andthe art of manipulating thestrings of puppets is alsogorgeous. Those richly andornamented different puppetswith their distinctcharacteristics, have to followtraditionally acceptedpractice not only on stage butalso when they are kept intheir proper chests. Since itslong tradition of “A-myint–thabin” or performance to bestaged, it proceeded the dramaand performing arts ofMyanmar, Since Myanmarare fond of appreciationof “min-ga-lar” or“auspiciousness” in everyperformance they do, thereare “12 kinds of min-ga–lar”or “12 occasions ”thatevery Myanmar parents haveto do for their off-springs sincethey are born till to coming ofage. All those “12 festivals ofeach month Myanmar month”or Seasonal Festivals of

Myanmar are encouraged tobe showcase more at nationallevel. Myanmar “pan-se-myo” or arts and crafts arealso highly recommended tobe promoted of its legacy andalso their traditional ways tobe recorded and printed.Nowadays, traditionalcraftsmanship of goldsmithis being substituted withmodernized way of makingmore attractive and expensiveaccessories made of gold. Soalso the weighing andmeasurement system of oldendays are not known very welland instead of the traditionalway, digitized system hassubstituted in many ways.Way forward

Though our land and ourpeople possess manyheritages left and handeddown by our ancestors, therichness and abundance ofheritage still need to be putmore attention andpromotion of awareness hasto be widely made. The

possession of those richnesscalls for systematic way thatshould be enlarged toencompass all aspectsrelated to raising awarenessabout oral and intangibleheritage. Here , we wouldlike to draw attention onUNESCO’s “Proclama-tion of Masterpieces of theOral and IntangibleHeritage of Humanity”starting in 2001 to raiseawareness on intangiblecultural heritage whichencourages localcommunities to protect themand the local people whosustain these forms ofcultural expressions.

Those proclaimedMasterpieces receivecommitment from UNESCOin financing plans for theirconservation. The culturalexpressions and spacesproposed for proclamationhave to meet the criteria like;demonstrate theiroutstanding value as

masterpiece of the humancreative genius; give wideevidence of their roots in thecultural tradition or culturalhistory of the communityconcerned; be a means ofaffirming the culturalidentity of the culturalcommunities concerned;provide proof of excellencein the application of the skilland technical qualitiesdisplayed; affirm their valueas unique testimony ofliving cultural traditions;and be at risk of degradationor of disappearing. If so,Myanmar’s manifestationswill be endless list not onlyfor intangible but also fortangible heritage.Regarding to the recentprogress made, we have towelcome those interests andinitiatives being done byUNESCO and thecollaborations underway tobe more positive andeffective.

MTH (NPE)Bracing for the changing seasonBracing for the changing seasonBracing for the changing season

Summer is coming inwith full swing. The coldseason has just wrapped upand waving goodbye fornow. There remains only mildchilliness during the nightsand early mornings, in some

parts of the country. Theenvirons are drying up. Thatis why we must prepare forthe hot season, which we areto endure for about threemonths. We must eat and wearappropriately to the season.

Vegetables are a mustand juicy fruits are essentials.Hot and oily foods are advisedto be avoided during the longhot summer days. To preventdehydration, a lot of watermust be drunk to replenishthe liquid in your body. Theblazing sun will definitelytorch you if you are not

covered with shades of anykind; sunglasses, hats, umbrellas, when you go out.

We have to accept andadapt to the changingenvironment, and shed off thethick and dark-colouredclothes to thin and light-coloured clothes. Quilts andheavy blankets are now putback into the closet andjackets and sweaters arewashed for the next winter.

Exercise must be done inthree mornings or evenings.Binge drinking of alcoholshould be abstained during

the hot extreme weather, which is for your own good.We should also avoid takingbaths outdoors under thebaking sun and by the banksof rivers and lakes, during theafternoons.

The winds are alsoroaming in and we must takecaution and be alert of fireoutbreaks. The risks are higherin the summer, which cancause a lot of loss andmiseries.

During the summer as inall seasons, people areadvised to drink clean or

boiled water, avoid uncleanfood that are touched by flies, and to clean hands beforehaving any meal, and sleepinside mosquito nets.

Evolving to a new seasonis but nature, but we shallhave to grapple with a clearmindset to be able to acceptthe changes. We cannot clingon to the cold season whichhas just left us. No lingeringto the past. We have toembrace to the times ahead.

There are a lot of brightsides to look forward to. Oneof them is the blooming of thebeautiful fragrant padaukflowers after the Aprilshowers. The flower, which isa renowned Myanmaridentity, is depicted in a many

Myanmar songs andliterature, over the centuries.

Moreover, the youthswill be able to enhanceextracurricular studiesduring their summerholidays. Family vacationscan also be taken.

What’s more is that themerry and joyful New YearWater Festival is at ourdoorstep and we shouldwelcome the New Year witha healthy lifestyle and ahappy heart.

Here is wishing, theupcoming Myanmar EraYear 1374 to be prosperousand may all wishes cometrue for all of us Myanmarpeople!

The brutal clashes between drug cartels and securityforces have sapped support for Calderon’s conservativeNational Action Party, or PAN, which has also failed toreduce the number of poor and create enough jobs for agrowing population. CARACAS, 31 March—Venezuelan regulators shut downfour radio stations on Friday for allegedly operating withoutlicenses, including one run by a brother of a state governoron the outs with President Hugo Chavez. The four stations alloperated in the eastern state of Monagas, the NationalTelecommunications Commission said in a statement.

One of them is owned by a brother of the Monagasgovernor, Jose Briceno, who charged that the governmenttook the action in retribution for his recent criticism of someleaders of Chavez’s party. But the Venezuelan BroadcastIndustry Chamber, which in the past has criticized theclosings of some other radio stations, said it supported theshutdown of these latest stations because they were operatingillegally. Its statement said the broadcast regulatory agency’smeasures were “in defense of service providers that operatelegally.”

The chamber, which represents more than 400broadcasters in Venezuela, has for years complained ofunlicensed radio stations that interfere with the signals ofproperly registered stations. Enza Carbone, the chamber’spresident, told state television that the organization hassupported regulators’ shutdowns of more than 50 unlicensedstations over the past 10 months. The telecommunicationscommission said the four stations will be able to appeal thedecision.

US study forges link betweendepression, sleep apnea

WASHINGTON, 31 March—Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)and other symptoms of OSA are associated with probablemajor depression, regardless of factors like weight, age, sexor race, according to a new study released Friday from theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Therewas no link between depression and snoring, according to thestudy. “Snorting, gasping or stopping breathing while asleepwas associated with nearly all depression symptoms, including feeling hopeless and feeling like a failure,” saidAnne Wheaton, lead author of the study.

The study, appearing in the April issue of the journalSLEEP, is the first nationally representative sampling toexamine this relationship, surveying 9,714 American adults.Previous studies have focused on smaller samples of specificpopulat-ions.Wheaton, an epidemiologist with CDC, saidthe likelihood of depression increased with the reportedfrequency of snorting and/ or instances when breathingstopped in the study.

She suggested screening for these disorders in thepresence of the other could help address the high prevalenceand underdiagnosis of sleep apnea and depression, especiallyif sleepiness is a chief complaint.

Snorting, gasping and pauses in breathing during sleepare all signs of OSA, a common form of sleep-disorderedbreathing. Six percent of men and three percent of women inthe study reported having physician-diagnosed sleep apnea.OSA occurs when the muscles relax during sleep, causing softtissue in the back of the throat to collapse and block the upperairway.— Xinhua

MADRID, 31 March—Having steadied the shipfollowing two consecutivedraws with commanding winsin La Liga and in Europe, RealMadrid begin a crucial run ofgames with a tricky trip toPamplona to face Osasuna. After Barcelona beat Sevilla afortnight ago, Barca coachPep Guardiola declared thatthere was no way his sidecould beat Madrid to theleague title.

But then two late free-kicks from Santi Cazorla and

Marcos Senna, for Malagaand Villarreal respectively, saw their sides draw againstan increasingly nervy Real.

A sense of trepidation atthe Bernabeu was eased by a5-1 thrashing of RealSociedad and then, in mid-week, Karim Benzema hit hissecond brace in a matter ofdays as Jose Mourinho’s sidetook a big step towardsqualifying for the ChampionsLeague semi-finals with a 3-0away victory over APOEL inCyprus.

The gap at the top is sixpoints but Real have somebig games ahead of them, withthe visit to sixth-placedOsasuna coming before ahome clash with Valencia, theMadrid derby with Atleticoand the Clasico away toBarcelona.

Pamplona is traditionallya tough place to visit, andOsasuna inflicted a damaging1-0 defeat on Madrid there lastseason. Jose Luis Mendilibar’sside have also been one of thesurprise packages of this

Arsenal manager Arsene Wengerreceives UEFA ban & fine

LONDON, 31 March — Arsene Wenger has been bannedfor three matches and fined 40,000 euros (£33,000) for hisconduct in Arsenal’s Champions League defeat by AC Milan.Wenger confronted referee Damir Skomina after his side’s 3-0 second-leg win at Emirates Stadium, which could not preventthem losing 4-3 on aggregate. “It’s not justified and I willstraight away appeal,” said Wenger, who has three days tolodge his complaint. The Frenchman has now received threeUEFA bans in the space of a year. This latest punishmentcomes after he took issue with Skomina on the pitch after thefinal whistle.

He also criticised the Slovenian official in his post-matchcomments, claiming too many free-kicks were awarded toMilan. Speaking before hearing of his reprimand, Wengercommented: “I believe that they have transformed UEFAcompetition referees to be untouchable icons, where youcannot even have a word. “The only thing they understandafter the game is the report. “I believe that when you have 25years consecutively in Europe you can still ask the referee thatyou can have some discussion with him. It is very difficult tounderstand.”

Stilian Petrov watches asChelsea beat Aston Villa in

six-goal thrillerLONDON, 31 March—On a chilly and sombre day in the

Midlands, Chelsea crept closer to Champions Leaguequalification next season – that is, if they do not win thecompetition this time around – with a nerve-jangling victoryover a young and eager yet brittle Aston Villa side. Theythrew away a two-goal lead, allowing Villa to draw level, buttwo late goals crowned an entertaining encounter after thedesperate news at Villa Park the previous day.

The match had been overshadowed by the news 24hours earlier when it was revealed that Stilian Petrov, theVilla captain, had been diagnosed with acute leukaemia.Poignant reminders were everywhere, with the players ofboth sides – during their pre-match warm-ups – wearing T-shirts on which were printed “Our Thoughts Are With You”.

A statement was also read out on Petrov’s behalf over thePA system, in which he said: “I am sure I will beat this illnessand I am determined to do this. For me, football will have totake a back seat for a while but I will continue to support myteam-mates.”

Both sets of fans applauded and Petrov, with his familyin an executive box, responded in kind. However, Villa’sresponse once the game had started was sluggish and Chelseaalmost went in front early on. But Fernando Torres, startingfor the fifth time in the eight matches under Roberto DiMatteo, the interim first-team coach, drove against goalkeeperShay Given.

The Spaniard also played a role in the ninth minute, when Chelsea did go in front. Salomon Kalou dinked in across from the right, Torres touched it on to Juan Mata – whoappeared offside – and collected the return pass. Givendenied Torres again but the ball squirmed to Daniel Sturridge, who guided in his 12th goal of the season from close range.

More applause for Petrov broke out in the 19th minute– he wears the No 19 shirt – and Villa almost equalised. BarryBannan swung in a corner and James Collins nodded narrowlyover. Mata could have doubled Chelsea’s lead but his cleverchip struck a post. Back came Villa, with Gabriel Agbonlahorforcing a fine save from Petr Cech. Chelsea, though, havegrown resilient since Di Matteo replaced André Villas-Boas– albeit on a temporary basis – and drove forward again in the51st minute. Again there seemed to be a hint of wrongdoing, with Branislav Ivanovic perhaps using a hand to help controlMata’s corner before he planted it into the net.

If Di Matteo thought Chelsea were coasting, he waswrong. Villa fought back with two goals in three minutes, with James Collins heading in powerfully from Eric Lichaj’slong throw and then Marc Albrighton crossing for Lichaj totuck in the leveller.—Internet

Bees ‘self-medicate’ when infected withsome pathogens

When faced withpathogenic fungi, bees

line their hives withmore propolis - the

waxy, yellow substanceseen here.

SCIENCE DAILY, 31March—Research fromNorth Carolina StateUniversity shows that honeybees “self-medicate” whentheir colony is infected witha harmful fungus, bringing inincreased amounts ofantifungal plant resins toward off the pathogen. “Thecolony is willing to expendthe energy and effort of itsworker bees to collect theseresins,” says Dr. MichaelSimone-Finstrom, apostdoctoral researchscholar in NC State’sDepartment of Entomologyand lead author of a paperdescribing the research. “So,

clearly this behavior hasevolved because the benefitto the colony exceeds thecost.”

Wild honey beesnormally line their hives withpropolis, a mixture of plantresins and wax that hasantifungal and antibacterialproperties. Domesticatedhoney bees also use propolis,to fill in cracks in their hives. However, researchers foundthat, when faced with a fungalthreat, bees bring insignificantly more propolis— 45 percent more, onaverage. The bees alsophysically removed infectedlarvae that had beenparasitized by the fungus andwere being used to createfungal spores.
