Operator StationThe Cat 836H has been ergonomically designed to enhance operator comfort, allowingfor a more productive landfill.

Cat® C18 Engine with ACERT™Technology. The C18 ACERT engine isU.S. EPA Tier 3/EU Stage III emissionscompliant. It uses ADEM™-IV enginecontroller to manage fuel delivery andvalve timing, along with all otherengine systems.

Mechanically Actuated Electronic FuelInjection (MEUI). MEUI combines thetechnical advancement of an electroniccontrol system with the simplicity ofdirect mechanically controlled unit fuelinjection. It controls injection pressureover the engine operating range so theC18 has complete control over injectiontiming, duration and pressure.

Torque Rise. The torque curveeffectively matches the transmissionshift points for maximum efficiency.

Air-to-Air Aftercooler (ATAAC) System. The ATAAC system is a separatecooling system for the intake manifoldair. It routes hot, compressed air fromthe turbo and cools it with a single pass,air-to-air aluminum heat exchanger. The cooled, compressed air greatlyreduces the emissions produces, meeting U.S. EPA Tier 3/EU Stage IIIrequirements.

Separate Engine Cooling System. The radiator and fan are isolated fromthe engine compartment to provide:

• Lower sound levels

• Cleaner engine compartment

• More efficient cooling by drawingair through the side rather thanthe engine compartment

Trash Resistant Modular Radiator. With ten cores standard, coolingcapability is improved, even in highambient temperatures. Serviceabilityis enhanced, as there is no top tankto remove. The modular radiator usescopper brazed brass tubes and sixcopper fins per inch.

Cat Planetary, Power ShiftTransmission. Electronic shiftingprovides smooth, consistent shiftswith finger-tip controls. Large diameterclutches team with four and five planetgear trains for added durability andextended, trouble-free life.

Throttle Shift. Programmable, controlledthrottle shift works with the transmissionElectronic Control Module to prolongtransmission life through smooth, efficient directional change shifting.

Throttle Lock. Throttle lock allows theoperator to set engine speed to a constantrpm and allows the foot to be off of theaccelerator pedal. This is similar to anautomobile’s cruise control.

8

Field proven components and a legacy of designing for the harsh environment of the wasteindustry, the Cat 836H offers dependable and reliable performance.

Power Train

Impeller Clutch Torque Converter andLeft Pedal Control. Works with throttlelock to allow the operator to modulaterimpull to wheels and slow machinedown without reducing engine speed. This allows the machine to maintainfull hydraulic power for blade andsteering control which gives the 836Ha hydrostatic feel while keeping thebenefits of the world’s most efficientand powerful drive train and powershifttransmission with lock-up control system.

Oil Enclosed, Multiple-Disc Brakes. The brakes located on the front axleprovide consistent performance andreliability through heat rejection andeasy serviceability.

Inboard Mounted Brakes. Operatingon the low-torque side of the final drive, inboard mounted brakes require lessbraking force. Brake disc locationimproves axle oil circulation to promoteefficient cooling and heat dissipationand extend service life.

Parking Brake. The secondary parkingbrake is dry disc, spring and oil released. It is mounted on the transmissiontransfer gear output shaft for manualoperation.

StepTip. The new StepTip has adistinctive, modified pyramid shapethat provides multiple surfaces (steps)to improve compaction and traction. The increased compaction surface occursin several stages along the height of the178 mm (7 in) tip. The compactionsurfaces remain intact longer during thelife of the tip to keep compaction levelshigh as the tip wears. The tip shape alsofeatures a central rib to absorb the bulkof the wear and help the tip maintain itsshape as it wears, as well as increasingtraction on side slopes.

Most tips are straight up and down, which can cause the compacted materialto uncompact (“fluffing”) as it rotatesout of contact with the surface. The StepTip’s broader base and angled surfacetends to clear a path for the top of thetip as it rotates out of contact with thelandfill surface. It will not dislodgethe compacted material and eliminates“fluffing.”

An additional five tips per wheel areadded to the wheel pattern, bringing thenumber of tips to 40. The tip surface isharder than any previous Cat LandfillCompactor tip, and it is hardened to agreater depth. The lower portion of thetip is made from low carbon steel thathas less hardness than the upper portion. This type of steel is easily welded andmakes attachment of the tip to the wheelvery convenient in the field or shopwith a minimum of preheatingrequirements. No overlayment orhardfacing is required to achieve theexpected tip wear life.

Optional Self-Cleaning ChopperWheels. Chopper wheels are designedto deliver maximum compaction andtraction in landfill work. An aggressivechopping action is provided by 28blades per wheel. The staggered, chevron blade arrangement evenlydistributes chopping coverage and bladecenter gusset to help assure maximumrefuse demolition. Front and rear wheelblades are mounted differently tomaximize chopping and compaction inboth forward and reverse.

Smooth Wheel Option. If our tipselection does not meet your needs, consider Cat smooth steel wheels. Thisoption ensures that no matter whatlandfill tip you prefer, you get Catwheels built to our stringentspecifications. Our manufacturing andresearch engineers work together todesign, build and test a complete powertrain system. The wheels, a criticalcomponent to the total system, aremanufactured in the same facility as ourlandfill compactors – ensuring the entiresystem is complemented by eachcomponent.

Altering critical components cancompromise our power train system thatis designed for peak performance. If anoff-the-shelf manufacturer’s wheels areinstalled that do not meet our designspecification and do not balance theload over our finals drives, bearing lifecould be reduced substantially andcause premature wear of othercomponents – resulting in unnecessarydowntime. This situation runs contraryto the Caterpillar goal of keeping ourcustomers operating with maximumproductivity, performance andcompaction. This option also allows ourstandard axle guard system to workwith the components for which it wasdesigned.

10

Wheels and TipsTo provide excellent traction and compaction, the Cat 836H Landfill Compactor offers wheeland tip options to help you achieve better landfill life.

Electro-Hydraulic Control System. This system provides low-effort, finger-tip control to increase productivity whileminimizing operator fatigue. The floor-mounted control pod lever sends electricalsignals to a pilot valve mounted on thefront frame.

Lift Lines. Lift lines are located highon the machine to prevent damagefrom debris.

STIC Steering System. The STIC steercontroller uses a single lever for steeringand transmission control. Left-handoperations enable the operator to shiftand change directions without lettinggo of the steering controls. Repetitivemotion fatigue is minimized throughlow-effort implement controls andeffortless steering.

Auto-Blade Positioner. Removeredundancy of raising and loweringblade every time the machine changesdirection with the Auto-Blade Positioner. It will automatically raise and lower theblade to any position that an operatorsets. Activation occurs when the machinemakes a directional change and theblade control joystick is not moved.Reverse and the blade goes up.Forward, the blade goes down.
