Torque Converter. The D5N single-stage torque converter efficientlyresponds to changing load conditionsby providing torque multiplication,therefore increasing drawbar pull.It provides protection to the drive traincomponents by preventing shockloads from heavy dozing applications.The torque converter is efficientlymatched to the power train componentsand provides the superior performanceyou need.

Auto-Shift/Auto-Kickdown. Auto-shiftallows the operator to pre-select aforward and reverse speed range foreasy, efficient directional changes.

Auto-shift settings include:

• 1.5 forward to 2.5 reverse.

• 2.5 forward to 2.5 reverse.

• 2.5 forward to 1.5 reverse.

Auto-kickdown allows the transmissionto automatically downshift whensignificant load increases are detected.

Transmission. The proven planetarypowershift transmission features fivespeeds forward and five speeds reverseand utilizes large diameter, high capacity,oil cooled clutches. To maximize thelife of the transmission, the planetarydesign distributes loads and stressesover multiple speed ranges.

• Controlled throttle shifting regulatesengine speed during high-energydirectional shifts for smootheroperation and longer component life.

• The transmission and bevel gear setare modular by design, and easilyslide into the machine’s rear case,even with the ripper installed.

Multi Velocity Program (MVP).The MVP provides unquestionablebenefits for the tractor, owner andoperator. MVP increases the numberof speed ranges from three (1-2-3) tofive (1.0-2.0-2.5-3.0-3.5), allowing theoperator to perfectly match the tractorspeed to all applications and groundconditions while reducing noise levels,within each speed range. The enginespeed has been optimized, reducing fuelburn and lowering operating cost.

Steering Clutch and Brakes. Oil cooled,hydraulically actuated, large diameterplates and clutch discs provide highertorque capacity and increased service life.

Elevated Final Drive. Final drives areisolated from ground and work toolinduced impact loads for extendedpower train life.

Electronic Steering and TransmissionControls. The D5N provides Finger TipControl for steering. Soft touch buttons,located on the steering controls, shift theelectronically controlled transmission.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.The D5N has an additional transmissionshifting feature for added performanceand operator comfort – the ElectronicClutch Pressure Control (ECPC).This unique feature provides smoothershifting by regulating and modulatingthe individual clutches based on currentoperating conditions.

Drive TrainRugged, durable and reliable components deliver smooth, responsive power and lastingreliability. The Auto-shift and Auto-kickdown features enhance operator productivity.

Five Speed Forward/Reverse GearSelection. Five speed forward/reversegear selection is achieved simply bypressing the yellow speed selectionbuttons. These buttons are integratedinto the Finger Tip Control group.

• Automatic shifting features andreduced lever efforts provide easierupshift and downshift, increasedoperator comfort, reduced fatigueand shortened cycle times.

• Another feature aimed at operatorcomfort is electric vertical adjustmentof the FTC control group. This helpsposition the operator’s arm forefficient ergonomics.

Electronic Clutch and Brake SteeringSystem. The electronic clutch and brakesteering system incorporates low effortfinger tip levers allowing the operatorto work more precisely in close areas,around structures, obstacles and gradestakes. Pulling the left or right fingerpaddle causes the machine to turnaccording to the amount of paddledisplacement.

Machine Direction. Machine directionis controlled by moving the machine’stransmission forward/neutral/reversedirection lever. The middle positionputs the machine transmission in neutral.

Steering Assist. Present on the newMulti Velocity Program (MVP),the Steering Assist improves turningperformance, steering modulationand operator comfort.

Cab. The design is spacious andcomfortable to promote shift-longproductivity. Large glass window anddoor panels allow for excellent visibilityto the blade, rear and sides of themachine. Door and window seal designallows for a fully pressurized low dustcab. Acoustic headliner material, andsound suppression foam panels reducesound levels to 79 dB(A) according tothe dynamic test procedure and conditionsthat are specified in ISO 6394:1998.

Individual windshield wiper controlsare located in the front section of theheadliner. The cooling system isincorporated into the cab structureproviding good visibility to the rearof the machine.

Cat C500 Comfort Suspension Seat.Caterpillar C500 Comfort Series AirSuspended Seat is ergonomicallydesigned to support the operator invarious site conditions (optional).

• Seat is fully adjustable for maximumoperator comfort, support andreduced operator fatigue.

Electronic Monitoring System (EMS III).EMS III provides the operator instantfeedback on machine conditions andrecords performance data to helpdiagnose problems. It has flashablememory allowing system upgrades,as new technology and software becomeavailable. The system is compatiblewith Cat ET and CMS service tools.

EMS includes gauges and readouts for:

AccuGrade Ready Option (ARO).The AccuGrade Ready Option (ARO)provides a factory installed on-boardplatform for the AccuGrade LaserSystem or the AccuGrade GPSinstallation. All of the changes requiredto the electrical system, hydraulicsystem, blade, and cab are incorporatedinto the ARO. Mounting brackets addedon the blade allow easy installation ofthe masts. Mounting brackets in the cabsecure the in-cab display. Plug-in pointsinside the cab and on the front of themachine make it easy to installelectronic components.

Advantages. Current earthmovingand fine grading processes are laborintensive, dependent on manpowerand instruments. Maintaining consistentgrade between stakes is challenging,even for experienced operators.The AccuGrade Laser and GPS MachineControl and Guidance Systems reducelabor requirements and help operatorswork to the design plan by accuratelycutting, filling and reducing material cost.

Automatic Blade Control Feature.Automatic control of the blade’s liftand/or tilt, provides consistent accuracywith higher productivity by reducingblade control demands on the operator.Based on correction signals, a hydrauliccontrol valve automatically raises orlowers the blade to maintain the correctedge elevation.

Applications. The AccuGrade Laserand GPS systems are designed for awide range of construction earthmovingapplications requiring tight tolerancesand high productivity rates. Choosingwhether to use a Laser or GPS systemdepends on the job site requirements.

AccuGrade Laser Grade ControlSystem. The laser system is ideal forfine grading sites with flat, single slopeor dual slope surfaces such as industrial,commercial and residential building sites.

Laser System Components:

1) Laser Transmitter. An off-board lasertransmitter (sold separately) emits a thinbeam of light that rotates 360º, creatinga grade reference over the work area.

2) Laser Receivers. Digital laser receiversmounted on telescopic masts abovethe blade’s cutting edge detect the laserbeam. During grade set-up, with thecutting edge placed at finish elevation,the electric mast automatically positionsthe laser receiver to within 1.5 mm(0.06 in) of the center of the laser beam.As the blade moves above or belowfinish grade elevation during thegrading process, correction informationis sent to the in-cab display. One receiveris required for single dimension control(lift) and two receivers are required fortwo-dimensional control (lift and tilt).

3) Electric Masts. Blade mountedtelescopic masts are electrically adjustablefrom inside the cab. They position thereceivers above the cab for unobstructedlaser reception.

4) Laser In-Cab Display. The in-cabdisplay with easy-to-read grade indicatorand backlit elevation display showsthe operator all AccuGrade systeminformation. The in-cab display arrowsshow the blade’s position relative tograde and indicate cut or fill requirementsof the work area. Push button operationallows the operator to easily switchfrom manual mode for rough gradingto automatic mode for fine grading.

AccuGrade GPS Control System.The AccuGrade Global PositioningSystem (GPS) is the best solution whenthe construction site involves contours,rather than single or dual slope planes.A GPS system compares the bladeposition to a three-dimensionalcomputerized job site plan and signalsthe operator or hydraulic system toraise or lower the blade to achievethe design requirements.

GPS System Components:

GPS Base Station. An off-boardGPS base station uses Real TimeKinematic (RTK) to provide a repeatablehighly accurate reference for the mobilemachines. One base station can supportan unlimited number of machines at thespecific jobsite.

GPS In-Cab Display. The in-cab displayprovides real-time operating informationto the operator. Designed for simpleoperation, the 140 mm (5.5 in) colorLCD daylight readable display withkeypad allows operators to easilyinterface with the system. Settings andviews can be easily configured accordingto operator preference. The display isdesigned for reliable performance inextreme operating conditions includingshock, dust and moisture.

Weatherproof Design. All AccuGradecomponents are designed for dependableperformance in harsh environments.

Support. Caterpillar AccuGrade Laserand GPS systems are available at yourlocal Caterpillar Dealer.
