ROTARIANS MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Hurricanes have wreaked havoc in Mexico, Texas, Louisiana and Florida.The Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs in affected areas are helping bring aid to battered communities. The Foundationis collecting emergency relief funds to help victims. Severe rainfall caused historic flooding in Texas, including in Houston,the country’s fourth largest city by population. 6.8 million people have been affected. Hurricane Irma has destroyed 25% of the homes in the Florida Keys and brought destruction and flooding to most of the Florida peninsula. “The powerof Rotary is in the Foundation's ability to pull help from around the world while local clubs provide immediate relief intheir own communities,” says Don Mebus (Rotary Club of Arlington, TX) Rotary districts on the Gulf Coast of Texas andLouisiana are collecting emergency relief funds and providing immediate aid to flood victims. In Texas, hundreds of lightprivacy tents were deployed to evacuation centers for families to use temporarily....Simultaneously, the most powerfulearthquake in a century hit the southern coast of Mexico at Tapachula on 7 September. At least 61 people were killed inthe 8.1-magnitude quake. Rescue and relief efforts are expected to be hampered by floods and a dangerous storm surgeoff the Gulf of Mexico because of Hurricane Katia. Rotary clubs world wide have answered the call and are proving thatRotary does indeed make a difference.
