Extreme temperatures have prevailed in Alberta — and across Canada — this winter. That trend
always generates discus-sions on how to protect cattle from the cold.
Cows need to main-tain a core temperature of about 38 degrees C, ex-
perts say.The province reports
that as the temperature goes down, cows expend more energy trying to stay warm, which requires more feed.
University researchers say that in temperatures of -10 degrees C, with the windchill, the energy needs of a herd increase by 30 per cent, so feeding needs to be adjusted ac-
cordingly.If cows don’t get the
extra feed they need, all their energy will go to maintaining their core temperature, and their body weight will drop,
the report determined.The impact of the cold
weather on Alberta cattle might have been mini-mized.
“Fortunately, for a lot of breeds of cattle out here, they are genetically developed to have a thick winter coat,” said Jay Byer, assistant director of agricultural services for the County of Stettler.
He said cattle owners in the county haven’t had much of an overwhelming problem with cold stress this winter.
Experts say mild hy-pothermia in cows begins when the core tempera-ture drops between 30 and 32 degrees C.
As hypothermia pro-gresses, blood is diverted to the vital organs, leav-ing cattle susceptible to frostbite, especially in the ears and teats, multiple studies have shown.
Hypothermia can be reversed by helping the cows warm up, research determined. “If the hy-pothermia progresses un-checked, a cow’s heart rate will drop and it will eventually die.”
The wind is the biggest factor in cold stress in cattle, so one way to pre-vent hypothermia or cold stress is to plant shelter-belts around where the cattle reside to cut down on the wind, advise agri-culture experts.
“Wet or muddy coats also prevent cattle from retaining body heat,” one reports says.
Byer suggested that having a place for the cat-tle to huddle in and keep warm helps them to avoid cold stress.
As well, if the cow is in good condition and is at a healthy weight going into the winter, it will have an easier time adjusting to and surviving the cold, he said.
Another way to help prevent cold stress in cat-tle is to provide warm and adequate bedding. Mak-ing sure a cattle herd al-ways has water available can also increase their feed intake, thus mak-ing it easier to maintain a core body temperature.
“(Cattle farmers) do their darnedest to make them warm and comfort-able,” Byer said.
“They’re a pretty har-dy lot and they can handle the cold.”
