Abbotsford News Tuesday, February 7, 2012 A21
Interior designer, spokes-person, author and tele-vision personality Jane Lockhart is one of Canada’s best-known experts in the world of design and colour. She will be one of the key presenters at the Fraser Valley Spring Home Show at Tradex in Abbotsford.
Lockhart has enjoyed six successful seasons as cre-ative director and host of W Network’s top ranked Colour Confidential, which also airs on Home and Garden Television USA. She has been practising interior design in Toronto as principal designer with her firm Jane Lockhart Interior Design since 1997, and received much recog-nition for her expertise.
Her interior design work appears regularly in a va-riety of national and re-gional publications includ-ing Canadian Living, Style at Home, Reno & Décor, Victoria’s Homes & Living, Home Décor & Renovations as well as American publi-
cations such as Consumer Reports and This Old House.
In Abbotsford she will take the audience on a vir-tual tour of many of her firm’s stunning design projects, including some of her favorite before and after home renovations featured
on Colour Confidential. Lockhart will share her expert tips and advice for adding colour and design elements to create instant style for high impact looks.
Over the span of her career, Lockhart has ap-peared live on a number of variety and daily TV
and radio shows includ-ing CityTV’s Breakfast Television, CBC’s Steven & Chris Show, Vancouver’s Urban Rush, CTS’s Always Good News and CHCH Morning Live.
At the end of 2010, her company Jane Lockhart Interior Design won the prestigious Building Industry and Land Development Association’s award for Best Model Home of 2010, for their de-sign and décor of newest Kylemore Communities de-velopment at Angus Glen in Markham, Ont.
The National Kitchen and Bath Association in Canada awarded Lockhart first place for the 2010 Best Large Kitchen Design and the Pinnacle Award for the Best Overall Design of the Year. In addition she placed third overall for her kitchen design in the National Kitchen and Bath Association Design Competition in the United States.
Bridget Savereux, Home and Garden Television host and award-winning designer, will show the Abbotsford audience the basic steps to creating a dream bathroom.
Whether the sky is the limit or you’re on a budget, Savereux will discuss all the finishing options, fix-tures and most importantly, the most efficient way to to make it all happen.
She currently co-owns Balance Living Design with her design partner and mother Maureen Powers. Savereux has been design-ing commercial and resi-dential interiors for eight years. Her mother has been a professional interior de-signer for more than 25 years. She loves clean, con-temporary interiors and her mothers’ passion lies in creating a home that is in sync with nature and the exterior surroundings of the home. No matter how confusing and tense the design process can get
between them, they always create an end product that is eclectic, unique, func-tional and most important-ly, makes the client happy.
They enjoy the chal-lenge of taking on an empty space and giving it the authentic feeling of a “home,” in sometimes
less than 72 hours. They just trust their initial in-stincts and grab the most beautiful accessories they can get their hands on... whoever knew fabulous pil-lows could make or break a great stage!
In 2002, after years of helping friends design their
homes and businesses andunder the guidance andpersistence of her mother,Savereux gave the designworld a shot, and over aspan of three years took ona few residential and smallcommercial projects on herown. At the same time, shealso educated herself part-time at BCIT. Then in 2005,decided to make the scarycommitment of starting upher own design companyfull time and even scarier, doing it with her mother!
In 2007, Maureen andBridget were approachedby The Home and GardenNetwork to co-star in anew design lifestyle pro-gram called The Stagers. The show is now in its sec-ond season and airing inCanada and The States!
Bridget believes the keyto a successful design ca-reer is to be diligent, dreambig and be flexible, butmost importantly, listen toyour client.

It’s called “curb appeal,” that good impression people get of your home when they pull up in a car, or when walking by.
Real estate agents can be as pleased with exterior curb appeal as they are with a well-main-tained house on the inside. When it comes to residen-tial property value, this book is indeed judged by its cover.
Exterior trouble areas include peel-ing paint; rotting wood on window frames; buckled roof shingles; overgrown shrubs; ignored lawns; and weeds growing through interlock paths, steps and the driveway.
“The lawns and landscaping that frame our home are as important as
the quality inside,” says Reinie Drygala, lawncare products manager for Clear Choice, a leading name in innovative garden products. “And the good news is: when it comes to first impressions just a few little tips and tricks can make a big difference quickly.
“If you’re frustrat-ed about overgrown weeds, for example, the newest herbi-cide technology is tackling that,” Drygala continued. “Now there are alternatives to tra-ditional herbicides that effectively kill weeds, but also pro-vide the homeowner with options if they are looking for ways to have less impact on the environ-ment.
In addition to beautifying your
lawn, try these quick tricks to give your home instant curb appeal:
• Scrape and spot-paint problem areas. This might be a tem-porary fix, but even a touch up is better than peeling paint.
• Add colour by planting some annu-als in the front yard flowerbeds.
• Replace or paint rusty fixtures like the mailbox, rail-ings, house number, and more.
• Tackle pesky weeds on interlock paths and driveway. Use hand sprays for targeted jobs, or larger jugs for a big surface area. More information at www.todaysclearchoice.com.
• Install lighting along your walk-ways and steps, or to spotlight the shape and architecture.

My technicians hear this comment frequently when making repairs. This tells me that homeowners are
not aware of some very important information.
Entrusting any part of the electrical system to a handy-man, because he may be familiar with construction is like allowing the janitor to remove your appendix just because he works in the hospital.
Since the BC Safety Authority demands such a high level of skill and experience to make changes to any electrical system, homeowners are wise to expect and demand the same.
An Electrical Contractor employs certified electricians and apprentices to install or repair electrical systems following the Canadian Electrical Code requirements. He must carry the proper licensing, insurance policies and bonds to protect the customer. His electricians and apprentices must be covered by a Workers Compensation (WCB) insurance policy, otherwise the homeowner is held responsible for any injuries occurring on their property. Only the electrical contractor (not a handy-man or any electrician) can purchase the electrical permit required for electrical work.
Homeowners should request to see proof of all the above before any electrical work begins.
Keep your home and family safe. Call Blue Crest Electric Ltd. Entrusting your electrical repairs, installations and renovations to a professional, just makes good sense.
Electrical is a federally and provincially regulated profession. This means that it is illegal for anyone, other than a licensed electrical contractor, to provide and charge you for electrical installations, renovations and almost all repairs. The Canadian Electrical Code, which is updated every 3 years, has very specific rules and installation requirements that must be strictly followed to ensure a safe installation or repair.
The risk of fire, personal injury and loss increases when:
Electrical work is not done by a certified electrician who performs circuit load calculations and follows the most recent Electrical Code requirements. Correct procedures, techniques and products are not used for electrical installations and repairs. Questionable work is not inspected and corrected by a trained professional. Electrical systems are neglected and not checked regularly for deterioration and wear.

2012 HOME ANDGARDEN EXPO FEBRUARY 10, 11, 12, 2012
One of the best things about the dawn of spring and the return of warmer weather is the chance to get out of the house and get some fresh air. For homeowners, this is the perfect opportunity to as-sess any damage the previ-ous months did to yards and develop a plan restore properties.
The first warm day of spring might seem like a great time to get out in the yard and get your hands dirty. But it’s best to wait until the grass has com-pletely dried out before getting to work. Raking on wet grass increases the risk of tearing out grass, which can cause bald spots and the growth of weeds down the road. In addi-tion, stepping on the grass while the ground is still wet can compact the soil, which can slow drainage and block the lawn’s roots from breathing.
Patience should prevail with regard to mowing the lawn as well. A lawn’s
roots will not start to grow until the average every-day temperature routinely reaches 5 C, so mowing too early is both unnecessary and potentially harmful to the lawn. When the tem-peratures regularly reach 10ºC, then homeowners will likely start to see their lawns growing.
Remove debris that’s piled up. Debris has a ten-dency to infest a yard over the course of the winter months. Fallen branches, stones and even trash can accumulate in a yard, put-ting those who spend time in the yard at risk of inju-ry once the warm weather returns. For instance, bits of twigs and pebbles that are blown across the yard during a windy winter can be embedded in the yard, making the yard less of a haven and more of a haz-ard. Once the grass is dry enough to walk on, walk around the property and remove any debris that’s piled up over the last few months.
Remove thatch. Once the grass has dried, you can begin to remove thatch that’s built up over the winter. Thatch is poten-tially very harmful to soil, blocking sunlight, air and moisture the soil needs to ensure a lawn looks lush and healthy. Thatch re-moval does not necessar-ily need to be an annual task. If thatch buildup is insignificant, then it can be done every other year. Just use a dethatching rake to make the job much easier.
Aerate, particularly if the yard is a heavy traffic area once the warm weath-er arrives. When the yard gets heavy usage, it’s easy for soil to become compact-ed, which makes it hard for air and water to reach the lawn’s roots. So if your yard is the place to be come the warmer months, aer-ate in the spring to loosen the soil and make it easier for the lawn to withstand the months ahead.
