Christmas tree lightings make for family-friendly outings It’s that time of year again, when Abbotsford lights up with Christmas cheer from one end to the other.

Families are invited to experi-ence some great events at High-street and classic traditions in the downtown core, both cen-tred on the lighting of a giant, majestic tree.

The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association began its annual Christmas Tree Lighting celebration in 1989. Each year since, families gather to see the 85-foot Douglas fir light up the night sky, adorned with white and red lights, and a big, beau-tiful white star on top.

“My absolute favourite part is seeing families return year after year,” says Tina Stewart, execu-

“This event has turned into a multi-generational family Christmas tradition,” says Stew-art. “People who enjoyed this years ago as children are now attending with their kids, and now, even grandkids. This is one of the true family-oriented Ab-botsford traditions.”

Another “must-do” on the list of holiday experiences in Abbots-ford is the third annual High-street Holiday Show on Satur-day, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m., which in-cludes a tree-lighting ceremony and Santa’s arrival.

The towering tree on display is one of the largest Christmas trees in Canada, and will boast over 6,000 individually control-lable tri-color LED nodes cho-reographed to holiday tunes.

will run an Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest in support of the Salvation Army from Nov. 15 to Dec. 15.

“Send us your best ugly Christ-mas sweater photo,” says Curtis. “Share the photo on Instagram tagged #HOLIDEOUS or send by email to  [email protected]  for your chance to win a $500 shopping spree.”

Christmas is right around the corner, so bundle up, grab some hot chocolate and get into the spirit of the holiday season with these outdoor, family-friendly festivities.

For more information, visit highstreetfv.com and downtownabbotsford.com

tive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Associa-tion.

“The faces of the kids, sitting on their dads’ shoulders as the countdown happens and the lights get flipped on - their faces light up as much as the tree does.”

On Nov. 29 from 1 to 5 p.m., roads in the area will be closed to traffic so families can stroll through the downtown area’s shops, sample free hot choco-late and cookies, and enjoy en-tertainment at the Aldergrove Credit Union Community stage. Meet Santa and Mrs. Clause when they arrive around 2 p.m. and join in on the Christmas sing-along with a choir, Mayor Henry Braun, and council right before the tree is lit at 5 p.m.

This year’s pre-show at 4:30 p.m. will see performances by B.C.’s best marching band, tal-ented dancers, holiday charac-ters, Spandy Andy - a world-re-nowned entertainer known for his quirky persona - and of course, Santa Claus, who will be available for photos seven days a week starting Nov. 22.

Tanya Curtis, marketing direc-tor at Highstreet, says one of her favourite things about the celebration is seeing the ex-pression on children’s faces.

“I love when the snow falls at the end of the show,” she says. “I guess I’ve ruined the sur-prise, but I love watching the little ones’ faces when the snow starts falling.”

For the second year, Highstreet

at first frostThere may be a chill in the air, but that’s no reason to

forego style for warmth.

There are plenty of fashionable looks in outerwear that can add a touch of sophistication to any

wardrobe. Think sleek and tailored, instead of bulky and shapeless.

Many people opt for classic colours — such as grey, navy and black — to get the most use of

what can be one of the more costly additions to your closet,

but pattern and colour can play important roles in spicing up your

look.

Plaid will stand the test of time, and a vibrant colour such as red or purple can perk up a dreary West Coast day.

For the more adven-turous, choose a coat with some embellish-ments — such as fake-fur cuffs or shoulder accents — to really stand out.

Choose whatever makes you feel best, and you’ll be ready

to tackle the cold in style!

In typical Julia Child style, she quipped “How can a nation be great if it’s bread tastes like Kleenex?” I’ll leave the white vs. whole grain bread debate alone for now, but paraphrase her to say, “How can a nation know if food will be greater than Kleenex if they haven’t tasted it?” This weekend’s Taste of the Market will give you the opportunity to sample many of our unique prod-ucts, passionately created by local vendors. Taste your way through the various food stations with pass-port in hand, getting a stamp at each stop. Great Monthly Contest!

This dish was so flavourful Rob had me make it twice in one week!

INGREDIENTS:1 lb Lepp’s Flank steak

Cut into 2” wide strips with the grain, then

sliced across the grain into 1/8” thick slices

3 tbsp Soy sauce

1 tbsp Dry sherry or mirin (I have also used a white balsamic vinegar)

1 tsp Sambal Oelek or Sriracha

2 tbsp Lepp’s chicken broth or 1/2 tsp Major chicken base mixed with 2 tbsp hot water

5 tbsp Oyster sauce

1 tbsp Light brown sugar

1 tsp Toasted sesame oil

1 tbsp Cornstarch

1/2 tsp Salt

1/2 tsp Pepper

4 cloves Minced garlic

3 tbsp Peanut oil or Vegetable oil

1/3 cup Water

1” piece Fresh ginger, minced (about 1 tbsp) My favorite tip - Store ginger in the freezer, & grate frozen with a microplane or small grater.

3.5-4 cups Broccoli floretsTrimmed, peeled, & cut on into 1/8” thick slices

1 Small red bell peppercored, seeded, and cut into 1/4” pieces

3 Medium green onions sliced 1/2” thick on diagonal

DIRECTIONS: Combine beef and soy sauce in medium bowl; refrigerate at least 10 min. or up to 1 hr, stirring once. Meanwhile, whisk sherry, sambal oelek, chicken broth, oyster sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, cornstarch and salt and pepper in measuring cup. Combine garlic, ginger, and 1 1/2 tsp. oil separately.

Drain beef and discard liquid. Heat 1 1/2 tsp. peanut oil in 12” non-stick skillet over high heat. Add half of beef to skillet and break up clumps; cook, without stirring, for 1 min. then stir and cook until beef is browned, about 30 seconds (it will cook more in the

sauce). Don’t overcook or it won’t be as tender! Transfer beef to plate and cover to keep warm. Heat 1 1/2 tsp. peanut oil in skillet, and repeat with remaining beef. It’s important not to crowd the beef so that it sears, rather than steams. Take the time to do it in two batches.

Add 1 tablespoon oil to now-empty skillet; heat until just smoking. Add broccoli and red pepper and cook 30 seconds; add water, cover pan, and lower heat to medium. Steam broccoli and peppers until tender-crisp about 2 minutes. Push the broccoli to the sides of the pan and add the garlic/ginger/oil to the center of the pan, mashing the mixture with a spoon, until fragrant, about 15 to 20 seconds, then stir the mixture into the broccoli.

Return beef to skillet and toss to combine. Whisk sauce to recombine, then add to skillet; cook, stirring constantly, until sauce is thickened and evenly distributed, about 30 seconds. Transfer to serving platter, sprinkle with scallions, and serve.
