SWAP Café: Komagata Maru On May 23, 1914 the ship the Komagata Maru arrived in Vancouver. The 376 passengers aboard were refused permission to disembark. For two months there was public debate around whether or not the newcomers would be allowed to stay. In the end authorities insisted that the ship should return to India. Hidden in Plain Sight: Uncovering Emily Carr’s Time in England Dr. Kathryn Bridge, Deputy Director and Head, Academic Relations & Atlas, Archives, Collections & Knowledge will present the results of her recent research trip on Emily Carr focussing on the five years Carr spent in England (1899-1904) pursuing her artistic training. It centres on three key records in the BC Archives holdings and discusses how they mesh with records held elsewhere. species in her job as the Program Zoologist at the BC Conservation Data Centre.

Jim Cosgrove - “Birds and Beaches, Roadtrains and ‘Roos - The scenery and

wildlife of southern Australia” December 4 Join retired biologist Jim Cosgrove as he and his wife travel by car from Sydney to Perth along the southern coast of Australia. We will visit a variety of coastal towns and cities, each with wildlife that is unique to Australia. Everything from raising baby wombats to feeding Indio-Pacific Dolphins – and, of course, a look at the amazing bird life along the way.

Erica Wheeler – “Stalking the Wild Onion: The diversity and evolutionary history of Allium species in North America” January 8 Some Allium species are familiar friends, such as the bulb onion, garlic, shallots and leeks, and are used in kitchens around the world. But did you know that more than eighty wild Allium species occur only in North America? Take a tour of this group of plants with Erica Wheeler, Botany Collections Manager at the Royal BC Museum.

Shelley Reid – “Vancouver Island Explorations” February 5 In June 2012, Royal BC Museum Registrar Shelley Reid enjoyed a number of small ship explorations of unique Vancouver Island places such as Bamfield and the historical First Nations village of Yuquot (Friendly Cove). Shelley will retrace her steps and give a photographic tour of some very special

parts of the “big” island and the wildlife she encountered.

Alex Van Tol – “Aliens Among Us” March 5 Alex is writing a children’s book about invasive species in BC. Did you know that if the Weather Loach’s watery environment doesn’t have enough oxygen in it, this fish will gulp air at the surface, which actually...um...makes it fart a lot. For more funky facts, come and hear Alex talk about some of the other wacky things she’s uncovered.

We Call Them Vikings May 17 – November 11, 2014 On it’s first North American stop, We Call Them Vikings challenges our commonly held beliefs as the Vikings emerge in a fascinating new light. Insights into Viking domestic life, death rituals, the significance of their craft, the power of mythology and the symbolism of their ships are explored in this interactive exhibition. See hundreds of rare Norse artifacts – jewellery, swords, axes, and clothing – many of which have never been shown outside Scandinavia. Produced by the Museums Partner, Austria and the National Historical Museum of Sweden.

Our Living Languages: First People’s Voices in BC Coming 2014 Our Living Languages exhibition is a collaboration between the Royal BC Museum and First Peoples’ Cultural Council. BC is the most linguistically diverse region in Canada. Sadly, of BC’s 34 languages, 22 are nearly extinct. These statistics have led linguists to identify this region as one of the world’s five language ‘hotspots’ – places with a high degree of linguistic diversity, yet where languages are vanishing most rapidly. Our Living Languages will embody and contextualize the richness and strength of this linguistic heritage and share it with the world. Kerry Mason – “Emily Carr: No Such Thing as Barren Years” October 20 The years of 1913 to 1927 in the life of internationally renowned artist and author Emily Carr have often been referred to as her “barrenyears”; Mason believes instead that this period showed a surge of creativity. Join us for an illustrated lecture about B.C.’s most famous artist.

Michael Layland – “Where Honour and Glory Lead” November 17 The Royal Engineers, also known as the “Sappers”, provided many and varied forms of support in the early days of the two British colonies on the Pacific coast of North America. The speaker, an ex-sapper himself, will give an overview of their contributions.

Raymond Frogner – “Squatters’ Rights and the Archival Meridian of William Pearce, Director of the Dominion Lands Board.” January 19 As Inspector of Lands Agencies for the Dominion Lands Board (1881-1884), Pearce was an administrator and policymaker at a time when Ottawa was formulating and implementing lands policy in the frontier west. His surveys of homesteads, Indian reserves and municipal borders sometimes led to friction – and even the accusation of causing the Riel Rebellion.

John Adams – “Victoria’s Black History” February 16At the invitation of Governor James Douglas several hundred Black settlers arrived from California to farm and pursue many other

occupations on Vancouver Island in 1858. Who were they and why did they come? John Adams, Victoria-based historian, heritage interpreter and author will answer these questions and provide many other interesting insights about Victoria’s Black pioneers.

Lisa Helps – “Neighbours Helping Neighbours: An Old-Fashioned Approach to a Modern Problem” March 16While researching at the Archives, Lisa came across a story from the local newspaper from July 1931 that read, “Citizens Emergency Relief Fund Surpasses $50,000.” It struck her, if people in Victoria did this in the past, what was stopping them now? Find out how historical research at the Archives became the genesis for a community program called micro-lending.

Linda Eversole – “Without Justice: Two Victorian Era Unsolved Murders” April 13Bakery owner Agnes Bings died around 8 pm on the night of September 29, 1899, the victim of a “Jack the Ripper” type attack. Two days later a second murder followed. Fortunately correspondence, the reports of the undercover Pinkerton operatives, and local detectives’ notebooks have survived. They provide compelling details on life in Victoria at the turn of the 20th century with accounts of undercover work in hotels, saloons and brothels.

Hoofed Mammals of British Columbia - David ShackletonRevised Edition

Hoofed mammals (ungulates) are the most abundant large mammals in British Columbia. In the Shadow of the Great War The Milligan and Hart Explorations of Northeastern British Columbia, 1913–14 - Jay Sherwood

In 1913, George Milligan and E.B. Hart lead two small expeditions to explore northeastern British Columbia. These 18-month explorations helped provide the first detailed information about this remote region. Unfortunately, World War I began just as the men completed their work, and the data they gathered was filed away and forgotten in the shadow of the Great War.
