Discussion Session n1 Foundation in urban areas

The aim of this paper is to present the main design and execution criteria adopted for the foundations of a viaductwith reinforced concrete structure, a deck of 30m wide and 770m of overall length, correspondent to 11 spans rangingfrom 50 to 105m, flying over the Padre Cruz Avenue, and being part of the last construction phase of the North-SouthLisbon expressway.

Due to the amplitude of the axial service loads transmitted to the foundations, bigger than 60.000kN at the mostloaded piers, as well as to the geological scenario: fills and alluviums covering Miocene heterogeneous materials: softsilty sands and clayed silts over sedimentary rocks, a ground treatment solution using jet grouting columns at the softsoils was adopted under all the viaduct footings. In order to better accommodate the seismic bending moments, transformed by binary effect on tension and compression axial loads, micropiles with cylindrical steel hollow section, were also executed between the jet grouting columns.

A comparison with the traditional large diameter bored piles solution is presented, as well as the interaction analysiswith the Lisbon Metro underground tunnel. The main results of a full scale tension load test over an experimentalmicropile are also pointed out. The foundation works are schedule to take place between January and July 2006.
