SIG/SIN Definition

AMSRS recognises two types of special interest groups:

• Special Interest Groups (SIGs)• Special Interest Networks (SINs)

SpecialInterestGroups(SIGs)are member only groups set up for special interest industry sectors to meet, network and run professional development and educational events.

AMSRS membership is a requirement for SIG membership.

To become a member of an SIG, an application needs to be submitted and any relevant SIG eligibility criteria must be met.

AMSRS will provide the SIGs with access to an online grapevine service; meeting, venue & catering assistance (where required and possible); and additional funding for speakers and educational items as required.

Currently, AMSRS supports the following SIGs:

• IRG - Independent Researchers Group• QRG - Qualitative Recruiters Group• CNG - Clients Networking Group*

*as an exception this group comprises AMSRS members and non-members

SpecialInterestNetworks(SINs)cater for AMSRS members and non-members interested in networking and participating in education forums for their industry sector. Participants are not required to be AMSRS members.

These networks aim to extend the AMSRS reach to non-member affiliate industry representatives to highlight AMSRS professional membership benefits and encourage them to join. The networks are encouraged to have an AMSRS LinkedIn subgroup to communicate amongst the network participants.

Special Interest Networks are provided with 3 Events supported by the Society per year.

Core objectives of the GSRN:• Develop a strong community of practice around

government and social research.

• Develop a space for an exchange of ideas and expertise between researchers and commissioners of research.

We want to expand dialogue beyond agency to reach a broader scope of practitioners. The ultimate aim is to build a broader government and social research community and remove barriers to engagement, providing a more flexible membership arrangement

Being a part of the GSRNThe GSRN is open to anyone who values high-quality, effective social research. The GSRN aims to reach beyond AMSRS’s traditional borders and welcomes members from across academia, government, the not-for-profit sector and private practice. The group encourages membership of the LinkedIn Group.

Government&SocialResearchNetworkThe Government & Social Research Network (GSRN) was launched in 2011 in NSW and in Victoria in 2012, initially under the name Social Research Network (SRN). It was established in the ACT in 2013, having a strong base in the government sector. The network subsequently adopted its current name (GSRN) in all three states in September 2014, to better reflect the nature of its objectives and participants’ backgrounds.

The GSRN provides opportunities for practitioners, commissioners and users of social research to network and develop their practice.

Being a part of the YRNThe YRN is targeted at people less than 30 years of age working in a research company as a researcher or research related professional, or studying in a research related field. It is not restricted to AMSRS members.

Young Researchers who are/become members of AMSRS (student, associate, or full) will have additional benefits that include cheaper event prices for other specified AMSRS professional development/networking events throughout the year. To access these additional reduced rates, members must be under 30 years of age.

YOUNG RESEARCHERS

YRNYoungResearchersNetworkThe YRN (formerly the YRG) has been operating in NSW, VIC & WA for more than 5 years. The group has been active in QLD since 2012.

The Young Researchers Network has been set up to provide those new to the market and social research industries with an opportunity to meet other researchers and to discuss issues of common concern and interest.

YRN events and activities will, in general, be specifically designed for those under 30 years of age in the early years of their market research career, although some may be of interest to the general AMSRS membership.

Core objectives of the OSN are to:• Educate: Educate researchers and end clients

about the value, and how to apply, online as a research methodology.

• Train: Ensure there are appropriate training opportunities available for individuals new to, or working within, the online services industry.

• Profile: Raise the profile and act as the voice of the online services sector within AMSRS.

• Share: Facilitate suitable forums for networking, and sharing ideas and challenges amongst colleagues involved in the online services industry.

• Network: Host events and networking opportunities for the wider market research community that support the objectives of the OSN.

Being a part of the OSNThe OSN is for those involved in the online services sector of the market and social research industry, including buyers and sellers of online sample, online software, and associated consulting services. OSN members are encouraged to consider joining AMSRS, but this is not a requirement.

ONLINE SERVICES NETWORK

OSNOnlineServicesNetworkThe OSN (formerly the OSG) was launched in NSW in May 2012.

The Online Services Network represents and exists for the benefit of AMSRS members involved in the online services sector of the market and social research industry for the mutual benefit of the online industry; including buyers and sellers of online sample, online software, and associated consulting services.

Core objectives of the IRG:• Provide a forum for networking among

independent researchers so that they can share ideas, experiences and problems.

• Provide opportunities for collaboration and shared workload when required.

• Facilitate professional development through information exchange, discussion and education about market and social research issues, latest techniques and skills.

• Keep members abreast of business issues affecting the industry and industry guidelines.

• Address issues specific to independent researchers.

• Promote the value of independent researchers to research buyers.

• Provide a resource for larger research agencies needing freelance help.

• Represent the special needs of independent researchers to the AMSRS and other relevant forums.

Being a part of the IRGMembership is open to all AMSRS members who are research consultants operating independently, freelance or in small alliances to service clients. It is expected that these independent researchers are either sole traders or work in a group of no more than 2-3 consultants, under the definition of a micro business (1-5 employees) where the balance of staff may include support staff, full, part time or casual.

IRGIndependentResearchersGroupThe IRG (Independent Researchers Group) was launched in NSW in July 2002 and in VIC in April 2008.

The IRG represents independent market researchers who are working as consultants or freelancers.

Core objectives of the QRG:• Promote and expand Quality Standards in

Qualitative Recruitment within the recruitment sector.

• Providing education and training opportunities to those new to the sector.

• Continue ongoing commitment to respondent quality.

• Provide opportunities for networking and sharing of ideas and challenges amongst those involved in recruitment.

• Host events and networking opportunities for the wider market research community that support the objectives of the QRG.

• Promote the QRG’s quality agenda within the AMSRS, the research industry in general and associated industry forums.

• Expand the membership of the QRG and raise the profile of the group.

Being a part of the QRGMembership is open to AMSRS members who currently work in the area of Qualitative Recruitment. Members may include owners/proprietors and staff of recruitment agencies, and/or staff of larger organisations whose primary responsibility is the recruitment of participants for Qualitative Research.

QualitativeRecruitersGroupThe QRG was established before 2002 to improve the quality and professionalism of qualitative recruitment providers within AMSRS. This currently operates in NSW only.

The QRG (Qualitative Recruiters Group) provides a platform for networking and information sharing amongst members (individuals) involved in the recruitment of respondents for qualitative research projects including but not exclusively: Focus Groups, In Depth Interviews; Ethnographic Research; Online Bulletin Boards; UX sessions; Product and Taste Testing.

Core objectives of the CNG:• Provide a forum for networking among

in-house market researchers to share ideas, experiences and problems.

• Assist in the professional development of members through the discussion and provision of information on latest techniques and topics.

• Keep members informed of industry developments.

• Address issues specific to in-house market researchers.

• Promote the role of in-house market researchers.

• Have an active voice in the AMSRS.

Being a part of the CNGMembership is open to those who are in-house market researchers and/or purchase research from external market research consultants or suppliers. (It excludes market research consultants/suppliers and suppliers of support services such as recruiting, fieldwork or data processing).

In addition all research buyers irrespective of membership of the AMSRS are eligible to join the group. Non AMSRS members can be invited to join the group, attend events and Committee activities with approval by the CNG Committee.

ClientsNetworkingGroupThe CNG was formed in 2007 in NSW and Victoria.

The Clients Networking Group represents market and social researchers employed within companies or government departments, who are responsible for providing their internal clients with insights to assist in the business decision making process of their organisation.
