Standards and Excellence Special School Peer Review Project This is a project using supported peer review methodology designed around a school to school support model, to help Essex special schools quality assure their judgements about provision and outcomes using the Ofsted framework and through the evidence found support school improvement. Overarching Aims: To assure and maintain high standards across all special schools by supporting them to consistently monitor and evaluate their provision or aspects of their provision and subsequently plan to secure real improvements in outcomes. They are designed to be an ongoing process not a one off event. Objectives: Improve attainment and progress for all pupils Strengthen a school’s selfevaluation Support the school to analyse its strengths and priorities; Support the school to identify the range and type of support required to maintain strength and meet priorities; Support ESSET in looking at support needs across all Essex special schools Develop professional critical friendship across ESSET Disseminate and develop good and innovative practice across the Trust and Local Authority Increase the capacity to deliver school improvement through commissioning Develop leadership and build capacity by developing the skills and capacity of school leaders and teachers to evaluate accurately Prepare for external inspection. Success criteria: All pupils attending a good or outstanding school Head teachers feel that the experience is valuable and has supported development planning. School to school support is improved Leaders in schools develop their monitoring and evaluation skills Resources A meeting with the LA Commissioner and the Head of the school to be reviewed to agree the team to conduct the review and a date. (1 2 hours) A team of four colleagues (the Head of the school to be reviewed, a colleague Head who has been agreed with the school Head, an Ofsted trained colleague and an LA officer (the LA officer could be the Ofsted trained colleague) to conduct review. (1 day) Follow up each term with a visit from the LA Commissioner to look at progress against any priorities identified and progress data. The Head can invite other colleagues from school as appropriate (1/2 day).
