to the 2015-16 School Year!It is with great anticipation that I welcome you

to this edition of Kids Today! I hope you and your family have enjoyed the summer. As a fi rst year acting superintendent, I am not unlike many of our students, feeling enthusiasm and excitement about the approaching fi rst day of school. On that day, students will begin the process of becoming acquainted with their new teachers, new schedules and new surroundings. With anticipation can come apprehension, and so it is our intent to pro-vide helpful information in this booklet to prepare families for the coming school year.

Our facilities staff have labored all summer, performing maintenance tasks on buildings and grounds. A lot of effort and planning has gone into the advent of All Day Kindergarten, from preparing learning spaces to procuring classroom furniture and instructional materials to hiring teachers.

Please take a few moments to read through the information presented in this booklet. Don’t

hesitate to contact your student’s school offi ce or the dis-trict offi ce with any questions you may have. I am honored to be part of this wonderful community and have every intention to continue building on an already tremendous culture.

Thank you for all you do to help our students!Sincerely,Gary Neal, Superintendent

Welcome to the Sequim School District Volunteer Program! The district recognizes the valuable contribution made to the total school program through the volunteer assistance of parents and community members. Last year, we had over 900 registered volunteers in our schools.

To volunteer in the Sequim School District, you must fi rst complete the volunteer clearance process. This process must be repeated each school year. The 2015-16 Volunteer Registration Form is now available on the district website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us. Pick up a form at any

school offi ce or at the district offi ce. The beginning of the new school year is an excellent time to fi ll out and turn in your form so you can be ready to volunteer in the schools or chaperone a fi eld trip.

Complete, sign, and return the Volunteer Registration Form with a copy of your current Washington State driver’s license or state ID card to your child’s school or the district offi ce at least two weeks prior to the date you wish to begin volunteering.

If you have questions about volunteering or about the volunteer screening process, please call Volunteer Coordinator Patsene Dashiell at (360)582-3264. Thank you!

3) The right to consent to disclosures of personally identi able information contained in the student’s educa-tion records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school of cials with legitimate educational interests. A school of cial is a person employed by the School as an administrator, super-visor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the School has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an of cial committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance commit-

It is important to complete the Free/Reduced Price Meal Ap-plication if there is a chance that your student(s) may qualify. The income guidelines change yearly and are set at the federal level, not at the district level. New applications are required to be completed every year for your student(s) to remain eligible for this program. Only one application per family is required. Applications are avail-able online in Skyward Family Access, which requires families to login. It is strongly recommended that the application be submitted through that format. Contact your school’s building secretary if as-sistance is needed using the electronic application. For the fi rst 30 meal operating days of the new school year, your student(s) will be at the same status that they were in June of the previous year. It is very important that the new applications are returned to the school in a timely manner for your student(s) to continue receiving free or reduced priced meals. Once your new, completed application is received, you will be notifi ed by the school district if you continue to qualify for the program. After 30 meal service days (October 14 for the 2015-16 school year) have passed and there is no new ap-plication on fi le for your student, he or she will be removed from the program and your family will be expected to pay full price for their meals. Parents are responsible for the student’s account until approved for the program.

A computer is available to families for submitting the online application in the technology department offi ce. Paper applications are also available at your student’s school offi ce. For more informa-tion, call the district offi ce at (360)582-3260.

Free/Reduced Lunch Program

Food Service

The Sequim School District recognizes the School Food Service Program as an integral part of the school day. Sequim Schools offer an approved lunch and breakfast program. This program provides for nutritious, balanced hot meals daily at all levels. The meals are nutritionally balanced with lunch meeting one-third the recom-mended daily nutrition requirement.

Free and reduced-price meals are available to students whose families meet certain federal income requirements. Check with your local school for income guidelines and application forms. Informa-tion on the application form is confi dential and will only be used to determine eligibility for school district food service programs. Breakfast and lunch prices are as follows:

Student Meal Breakfast Lunch Grades K-5 $1.30 $2.25Grades 6-8 $1.40 $2.45Grades 9-12 $1.50 $2.50

tee, or assisting another school of cial in performing his or her tasks. A school of cial has a legitimate educational interest if the of cial needs to review an education record in order to ful ll his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the School may disclose education records without consent to of cials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. [NOTE: FERPA requires a school district to make a reasonable attempt to notify the parent or eligible student of the records request unless it states in its annual noti cation that it intends to forward records on request.]

4) The right to le a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the School to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Of ce that administers FERPA are: Family Policy Compliance Of ce; U.S. Department of Education; 400 Maryland Avenue, SW; Washington, DC 20202-4605.

Notifi cation Regarding Asbestos Re-Inspection in Sequim School District - The District complies with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). Compliance results and information are on le in the Maintenance and Operations office. Feel free to contact the Maintenance and Facilities Department at 582-3275.

Display and Availability of Public Information for Non-School-Sponsored Activities Policy 4060 - The district desires to be of assistance in making information of educational or recreational nature available to students and parents. As a result, the board authorizes the staff to display and make available such materials from nonpro t at a designated area in each school. Approval is given by the building’s principal if the material is perceived as appropriate for families, and the service or event would be of interest to families.

All materials shall include the following disclaimer placed on the announce-ment in 10 pt. font: “The distribution of this material is provided as a community service and the district does not sponsor this event and assumes no respon-sibility for it. In consideration of the privilege to distribute materials, the entity requesting distribution agrees to indemnify and hold the Sequim School District harmless from any cause of action led in any court of administrative tribunal arising out of the distribution of these materials including costs, attorneys’ fees and judgments or awards.”

The distribution of materials is provided as a community service. Please note that the Sequim School District does not sponsor, endorse or guarantee the organization or activity in the materials distributed. Parents and guardians must review the information and decide if it is appropriate for their family.

Gun Free Zone/Dangerous Weapons Policy 4210 - It is a violation of district policy and state law for any person to carry a rearm or dangerous weapon on school premises, school-provided transportation, or areas of other facilities being used exclusively for school activities. “Gun-Free Zone” signs are posted in all school facilities, and all violations of this policy and RCW 9.41.280 are reported annually to the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Complaints and Grievances Concerning Sta and Programs Policy 4220 - The board desires that the district be informed of the criticisms and complaints that parents, guardians, or community members may have regarding its staff, programs, and operations. At the same time, the board has con dence in its staff and programs and shall act to protect them from unwarranted criticism or disruptive interference. Concerns received by the board or a board member are referred to the superintendent for investigation and action. Forms to begin the process may be obtained at school building of ces.

No Tobacco Policy 4251 - Smoking or any other use of tobacco products or nicotine delivery devices shall be prohibited on school district property. This shall include all district buildings, grounds, and district-owned vehicles.

Budget Policy 6000 - Each year in August, the Sequim School District Board of Directors adopts a budget detailing how the district will spend its monies for the next scal year. Before the budget is adopted, a public hearing is held. Visit the District website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us for a current copy of the budget.

Pesticide Policy 6895 - The district complies with the requirements of law regarding pesticide noti cation, posting and record keeping. Parents, please notify the District in writing if you would like to be noti ed of any District pesticide use at your child’s school building.

Transportation Services - Transportation is provided for students who reside more than one mile from school and for all students grades K-5 under one mile. One bus run will be operated in the AM and one in the PM with a

mid-day Kindergarten run. Schedules will be posted on the district website, at the schools, and printed in the local newspaper in advance of school beginning. The rst week schedules and bus stops may be adjusted slightly as bus routes are ne-tuned with respect to times and students rider numbers.

General Guidelines - If your student rides a school bus, parents are asked to review general bus rules with their students. Those rules and regulations are distributed the rst week of school by your bus driver and need to be signed are returned to the driver.

Children Walking to School - Parents plan a Safe Route to School with your child. Caution them to choose intersections for crossing that are regulated by stop-and-go signals, traf c signs, or intersections that are designated with school crossing signs with good visibility in good directions.

Sequim School District reserves the right to change bus routes and times as needed. Students in grades K-12 ride on buses together. Please check your student’s bus route and pick-up time listed.

First day of school: The Transportation Department strongly encourages all students who intend to ride the bus do so on the morning of the rst day of school (September 1, 2015). This will enable parents, students and bus drivers to become familiar with the bus stop routine. Students who plan to ride the bus need to be at their stop ve minutes ahead of pick-up time. Times and pick-up points listed below are approximations until exact enrollment and passenger loads are xed. Students need to be at bus stop 5-7 minutes before posted time. Please remember, if a bus passes waiting students, it may not be their bus.

For the rst day, new students will be picked up at all stops along routes, except for Hwy 101 East and West routes. The following are routes, not necessarily bus stops. Students will be advised after two or three days where the permanent bus stop will be. Every effort will be made to space stops approximately one-half mile apart, thus requiring a quarter-mile walk along routes. Exceptions will be made only on a case-by case basis due to special circumstances such as student safety or handicapping conditions.

Safety reminder for Hwy 101 West & East students: All students living on Hwy 101 West or East must catch the bus at their designated stop. Do not cross the highway to catch the bus at a later time.

Reminder for A.M. Greywolf Elementary students: Greywolf Elementary students are transferred to a shuttle bus in the Fir Street stadium parking lot.

Kindergarten bus runs: Kindergarten bus routes will be available at elementary schools on/after Sept. 25th or parents may call Transportation Of ce. Morning Kinder-garten students will ride their regular route bus to school, and the mid-day Kindergarten bus home. Afternoon Kindergarten students will ride the mid-day Kindergarten bus to school and their regular route bus home. There will be mid-day Kindergarten bus runs. Bus drivers will not drop Kindergarten students at stops unless a parent or other designated adult is there to meet the child. If there is no adult at the stop, the child will be brought back to the school.

Parents, for younger elementary students on regular bus runs, please have someone at the stop to meet the students, particularly on Hwy 101 East and West.

All other students will ride the same route bus in the A.M. and the P.M. unless otherwise noted. Students who wish to get off at a stop other than their own, or who wish to ride a bus other than their own must have an of cial bus pass issued by the school of ce. Hand-written notes from parents will not be accepted.

If you have questions, please contact Jeff Gossage, Director of Transportation, at (360)582-3274 or (360)582-3273.

Ann M. Renker, Ph.D., Assistant Superintendent for the Sequim School District

What an exciting time for the students and families served by the Sequim School District! As September and the beginning of another school year draws near, we can anticipate an increased investment in student learning thanks to the fact that we now have All Day Kindergarten programs in both our elementary schools. Research clearly demonstrates that children in All Day Kindergarten programs experience numerous intellectual and social-

emotional benefits, including greater gains in math and reading skills. More information about the strong impact of an increased Kindergarten day is available at the National Education Association site http://www.nea.org/home/11541.htm .

Another benefit found in a longer day at the beginning of the K-12 journey is the time to connect students with activities and ideas to stimulate the formation of plans for “what they want to be when they grow up”. In modern school parlance, this translates to building bridges to the five options that students can access after high school: entering the work force, joining a military unit, seeking out technical training, attending a two year college, or entering a four year college/university. Our staff at the other end of the educational provision sequence is also working to build partnerships that help increase college and career readiness for our high schoolers. Sequim High School English De-partment Chair Jon Eekhoff sent me some exciting information which elevates the relationship between good grades in high school English classes and college opportunities.

He writes, “Representatives from Sequim High School (SHS) and Peninsula College (PC) spent several days this summer working

together to create a new path for students to qualify for placement in English courses at PC. In the past, students were placed by the Compass test. While the test provided a quick snapshot of a student’s abilities in a limited area, both SHS and PC felt these results were not always a reliable source for placement. Starting this year, students attending SHS and transitioning to PC will be able to use their grades from English classes to qualify for placement in English 101 at the college. These agreements apply to both SHS graduates and to students wanting to move to PC for Running Start. In order to qualify a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at SHS. Students taking AP Literature or AP Language/Composition can qualify for placement in English 101 by scoring a C+ or better in both semesters. Students in Honors 10th Grade English must score a B or better in both semesters to qualify. Juniors in English 11 can qualify by scoring an A- or better in both semesters.”

Another wonderful feature of this district is the expansive view of community members and organizations when it comes to College and Career Readiness. At a recent meeting with members of the Sequim Education Foundation, I was pleased to discover the group’s commit-ment to providing resources for teachers to “think and act globally”. These resources can expand K-12 classroom opportunities to include practices and skills now highly valued in the work world and on col-lege campuses, such as increased use of technology and an emphasis on teaching world languages when children’s brains are most receptive.

But lest we forget a foundational obligation of public education, we need to close gaps in achievement and access to opportunity, including entry points to both the workforce and higher education. I am grateful to the community partners who expand the learning day for students, and help us close the mesh on our safety net for students and families needing wraparound support. Notable in this regard is our campus neighbor, the Boys and Girls Club, which assists us in preparing stu-dents to overcome obstacles and create a plan for success on whatever

All Day Kindergarten is the First Step in College and Career Readinesspath they choose. We have recently submitted a proposal to the county to ensure that we can provide substance abuse and mental health services for students, including proactive education that will minimize reliance on alcohol or drugs to relieve stress or cope with problems.

Keeping our eyes on the prize, College and Career Readiness, means we need to collaborate to discover and develop K-12 strategies to make education meaningful in this increasingly complex world.

SUMMER WORK – Did you know? While students and staff have been out enjoying the summer district

technology staff have been very busy preparing for next year by updat-ing and upgrading our existing desktop technology and infrastructure. All staff and student machines received a “RAM refresh” with addi-tional RAM being installed to insure all machines in the district will have the capacity to run the new release of Windows 10 in the future. Our internal infrastructure was upgraded with one Gigabyte switches throughout the district and improved internal wiring. Additionally, the new classrooms in the portables at Helen Haller, and the Kindergarten classes throughout the district have all been set up to provide access to technology for students.

WIRELESS ACCESS AVAILABLE – Did you know?Students and staff have the capacity to access our district’s high

speed wireless with their school district credentials and any wireless device using their district login. This is a secure connection that provides the same CIPA compliant internet filtering processes that are employed throughout the school district network.

NEW PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES –Did you know?Secondary students (grades 6-12) will be using Office 365 and

its many resources this fall with an individual school e-mail account provided for all students who have a signed internet use agreement. Additionally students will have access to OneDrive (1 terra byte of online storage) and Office Web Apps to support their learning. This will include such tools as Word, Excel and PowerPoint Online and others. The link to logging in is on our district webpage (www.sequim.k12.wa.us) in the upper right hand corner (the envelope).

All students and staff in the district have access to “Atomic Learn-ing” online training both at school and at home. Using their student login credentials students can search over 60,000 video tutorials to help them learn about such topics as effective online learning, internet safety, avoiding plagiarism as well as 250 commonly-used software applications. Including those specific to Office 365. Just go to our district webpage (www.sequim.k12.wa.us) and click the secure link on the left hand side of the page under Site Shortcuts.

SKYWARD FAMILY & STUDENT ACCESS – Did you know?Family Access is a web-based application that provides parents

with access to student attendance, grades, assignments, lunch account information, and more. If you know your login information or you current email information on file you can click the Skyward link on our district website (www.sequim.k12.wa.us) in the upper right hand corner and either login or request login information by clicking on the “Forgot your Login/Password?” link. If you cannot recover your password and login information, it will not be released over the phone or by e-mail for security reasons. You will be required to present yourself at a school

office with ID to receive this information. RevTrak and the ability to make online lunch account deposits

continue this year. Debit/credit cards are accepted for lunch account payments. Secondary students will receive student access logins and passwords at school.

THE VISION - Did you know? The Sequim School District Technology Committee identified

and presented to the school board in the spring of 2014 a ”Vision for Technology” that included five components: 1) Dynamic Accessible Robust Infrastructure, 2) Ongoing Professional Development, 3) Strong Network and Learning Support Team, 4) Student Learning Focus, 5) Sustainable. Much of the focus of our upcoming school year will be to continue to develop strategies and identify resources to implement the components of this vision.

REGISTER ON THE “SCHOOLWIRES” DISTRICT WEB SITE – Did you know?

You can find ongoing, up-to-date information about our school district on our district webpage. See interesting articles about what’s happening in our schools, a calendar of events, and review school board information. Schoolwires.com provides the District’s webpage with a feature-rich content management system designed especially for schools. Coming this fall our district webpage will be updated to a more responsive mobile-friendly interface. We ask that parents and interested citizens “register” online at www.sequim.k12.wa.us to be eligible for available interactive services such as E-alerts and other specific “role” features. The District website also features direct links to Family Access.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2015 • 11 KIDS TODAY FALL 2015

1371402

An adult’s ash of impatience behind the wheel or a child’s pan-icked sprint to catch up with a departing school bus can turn a sin-gle moment into a terrible night-mare. This fall, as the children get back to school it’s important that drivers and children remember that getting to school and home safely is everybody’s business.

If your children take the bus, make sure they know these ve simple rules: arrive at your school bus stop ve minutes before its sched-uled stop; wait for the bus a safe distance away from the side of the street; stay back from the bus until it comes to a complete stop; if it’s dark, wear retro-re ective material and stay visible to drivers; and if you miss your bus or if it never arrives, go straight back home.

For those who walk or ride a bicycle to school, help them choose the saf-est and most direct route. If there are no sidewalks,

make sure they know to walk fac-ing tra c or ride their bicycle with the tra c. Teach them to cross streets only at crosswalks and to always check for cars to the le rst, then right, then le again.

In the car, respect school bus traf- c laws, which means coming to a full stop, from both directions, until the bus’s red lights stop ash-ing. If you’re preparing to make a right turn, be aware of bicyclists approaching from behind you on that side. Keep an eye out for chil-dren crossing the street, especially during hours when the school day starts and ends. Slow down in school zones, and be watchful for children running to catch the school bus.

Help kids get to school and home safely

Drive slowly in school zones; kids can dart out

into the street faster than you can blink an eye.
