Not only is spring the time of year to clean the house, it’s also a good opportunity to refresh your ride. Starting from the inside out, here a few simple tips and tricks to get your automobile squeaky clean for the upcoming sunny weather.

Start with a vacuum. Depending on the depth of dirt inside, you can get away with using a house-hold vacuum, or you may have to take a trip to a car wash and use one of its high-powered suckers.

Take out any mats, and start from the back seat, working your way up to front. Vacuum the mats outside of the car before replacing them.

Take the time to wipe down the interior of your vehicle with a microfiber cloth and, if so inclined, a protectant to guard against the sun’s UV rays.

Make sure to scrub the doorjambs, as dirt and grime build up easily there. Use cleaners specific to the surface.

Now that the inside of the car is clean, it’s time to move on to the grimy exterior, which has probably picked up more dirt that one is willing to admit.

People have three options for car washing this spring season. The first is a DIY-method at home.

“From a stormwater perspective, any car wash-ing we recommend they do it on their grass,” said Jonathan Boehme, stormwater engineer for the city of Port Angeles.

“That would result in your lawn getting watered at the same time.”

When an automobile is washed on a paved service, that wash water is going to carry oils, grime,

petroleum, wax, etc., and it goes directly into our local water bodies, bypassing any treatment facility, Boehme said.

Use car-specific washes for the vehicle’s exterior.Several companies now make “green” versions to

lessen the impact on the environment. Worried about water? Fill a bucket at a time with

soap and water, then use a hose equipped with an automatic shutoff nozzle when rinsing.

It is estimated that a standard garden hose uses

about 10 gallons per minute. This means you use about 100 gallons of water with only a 10-minute car wash. When you use an automatic shutoff nozzle on a hose, water does not flow continuously while you wash your vehicle, saving as much as 70 gallons per wash.

In general, the city of Port Angeles recommends that residents use professional car washes when possible.

“Chemicals get piped into the treatment facility,” Boehme said.

He said these local car washes have computers set up to regulate the amount of cleaning, thus elimi-nating wasted water and soap.

A third option is charity car washes. The city offers to local groups and nonprofit organizations a “Fish Friendly Car Wash Kit,” according to Boehme.

“Anytime someone wants to do a charity car wash,” Boehme said, the group needs to visit Port Angeles City Hall and pick up a free permit.

The kit includes optional locations/business with whom to work, plus “fish-friendly” signage. These locations offer facilities where car wash water and chemicals drain into the proper sewer line and are treated at a facility.

A “pump kit” also can be checked out. Water from these washes goes into a catch basin, where water can then be pumped out and to a sanitary sewer.

For more information on how to obtain a car wash kit, phone the Stormwater Hotline at 360-417-4830.

At press time, other cities on the Peninsula did not offer similar “Fish Friendly Car Wash Kits.

Once the weather warms up, keep an eye out for kids and adults alike on the side of the road waving signs for their charity car washes.

For just a few bucks, these washes are greener for the environment and lend a hand to a local benefit.

Spring cleaning for automobilesBy LAURA LOFGREN | Peninsula Daily News

Spring is the perfect time to give your automobile a thorough cleaning inside and out. Carefully cleaning interior mats, windshields, mirrors and hard-to-reach places like the inside of wheels is more pleasant during warmer, drier weather.

Car maintenance should be performed routinely, but with springtime upon the North Olympic Peninsula, what better time than now to go over a few basics before heading out on the open road?

The first thing to check is your tire tread and pres-sure. Randy Schroeder, store manager at Les Schwab’s Port Angeles location, said tread depth often is over-looked by drivers.

He said an easy way to check to see if tires have good depth is the penny test.

“Turn the penny upside down and put it in the tread groove,” Schroeder said.

“If you can see the top of [President Abraham] Lin-coln’s head, then it’s time for new tires. If [his head] is partially covered, you’re usually OK.”

Schroeder said Les Schwab offers free tire-pressure checks for those who aren’t sure how to go about it themselves.

At home, make sure all tires are filled to their designated capacity, which is detailed on the tires.

Keeping the correct air pressure in your tires helps them last longer, helps the car handle better and safer and helps save money on fuel. It is recommended that drivers check their tire pressure every other time they fill up at the gas station.

As far as snow tires are concerned, Schroeder says you can ride on those as long as you like, but studded tires needed to be removed by March 31.

While rain came bearing down this winter and into spring, wiper blades got plenty of use. With chances of more drizzles ahead, double check your car’s wiper blades. Look for cracks and wear, replacing them each spring and fall if necessary.

To get your ride road-ready, check your fluids. Leon Skerbeck, owner, operator and working

technician of Rusty’s Import Auto Repair in Port Angeles — a shop that focuses on northern European vehicles — said he sees “at least one fluid level that

Basic automobile maintenance going into warmer weather

needs attention” after about a year of no maintenance on a car.

Skerbeck said car owners should invest at least four times a year in an overall vehicle inspection, which includes brake checks, light checks, air filter checks, oil changes and more.

“We now have these extended service intervals,” Skerbeck said. “And it’s been a year since someone checked your car. It used to be [every] 3,000 miles.”

Skerbeck stresses that vehicle owners should visit an automotive repair shop that specializes in their make and model, and to put a little extra money into maintenance.

“It’s worth it to spend the money to protect the investment,” he said.

Peninsula offers scenic, fun drivesBy LAURA LOFGREN AND BRENDA HANRAHAN | Peninsula Daily News

LAURA LOFGREN | Peninsula Daily News

A car travels along scenic Mora Road to reach Rialto Beach near LaPush on the North Olympic Peninsula’s West End. The two-lane road follows the Quillayute River to a parking area that supplies easy access to a driftwood-strewn beach.

Many of the North Olympic Peninsula’s highways and roads curve around glacier-carved lakes, wind past sea stacks and lighthouses and provide views of working farms, old-growth trees and the majestic Olympic Mountains.

All of these landscape features combined with the chance to see deer and elk in forested areas and harbor seals and whales just off a quiet coastal roads combine to make the Peninsula a wonderful place to take a leisurely day trip.

After cleaning and servicing your automobile or dusting off that motorcycle that has been begging for seasonal rains to stop, hit the open road.

On a clear and sunny day, it is hard to beat a drive along these scenic and fun-to-drive road:

NEAH BAY: HIGHWAY 112 TO CAPE FLATTERYFor a long day trip, start early out on state Highway

112 and head toward Neah Bay and Cape Flattery. Once on 112, also known as the Strait of Juan de

Fuca Scenic Byway, enjoy the rolling countryside that leads to scenic views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Motorcyclists take care when nearing the area near Pillar Point County Park. The road is bumpy and curvy.

Pass through Clallam Bay and Sekiu, potentially pausing for a bite to eat and seeing some fishermen do what they do best.

Continue on past Sekiu’s famous Rosie the fish statue after stopping for a photo, and take in views of the coastal sea stacks rising out of the blue water.

After reaching Neah Bay, stop for a Makah Recreation Permit at the Makah Museum, located within the Makah Cultural and Research Center or Washburn’s General Store before continuing to Cape Flattery.

Take Cape Loop Road until you reach the parking area for Flattery.

A short hike from the trailhead through Sitka spruces leads to an amazing view of the tumultuous Strait, the sturdy Cape Flattery Lighthouse on Tatoosh Island and plenty of opportunities for photos of puffins, murres and other coastal creatures.

1. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUNDWhen you purchase at locally owned businesses, more money re-circulates in the Port Angeles community. Local businesses often patronize other local businesses, service providers and farms. On average, for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, up to $70 stays in the local economy, creating jobs and expanding the community’s tax base.

2. REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINTSBuying from a local business helps the environment by conserving energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. More goods within walking and biking distances create less pollution and traffic congestion.

3. CREATE MORE GOOD JOBS Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally; in our community, they provide good jobs to local residents. Studies show that on average, locally-owned businesses create more jobs, provide better wages, benefits, and working conditions than national chains.

4. INVEST IN ENTREPRENEURSHIPCreativity and entrepreneurship are what fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity. The success of locally owned, independent businesses provides real-life examples to our young people, proving that they can stay in Port Angeles and prosper on their own terms.

5. CELEBRATE OUR EXCEPTIONAL COMMUNITYOur one-of-a-kind, locally focused businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of Port Angeles. This is another reason why we choose to shop, eat and have fun in our home town.

6. ENJOY SELECTIONS GEARED TO LOCAL TASTES AND NEEDSLocal businesses have a wider array of uniquely focused products because they buy and sell based on what they know local customers want and need, creating more relevant choices.

7. BUY FROM A PERSON, NOT FROM A SCREENLocal business owners and employees offer more personal service because they often have a high level of expertise and passion for the products they sell. They also tend to have a greater interest in getting to know their customers who are, after all, their neighbors.

8. INVEST IN OUR COMMUNITY’S FUTURELocal businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future.

9. ENHANCE COMMUNITY SUPPORT Choosing local nurtures your community. We know you, and you know us. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at over twice the rate of chain stores.

10. MAKE US A DESTINATIONThe unique character of the Port Angeles area is what keeps or brought many of us here. The more interesting and inviting we are as a community, the more we will continue to attract new neighbors, visitors and guests.

FORKS: COASTAL BEACHESA favorite spot, no matter the distance, is head-

ing down U.S. Highway 101 past Forks toward the coastal beaches.

If starting in Port Angeles and eastward, drivers and passengers can take in views of the Elwha River, Lake Sutherland and Lake Crescent before that long extension into Forks.

This drive takes you right into Mick Dodge and Twilight country.

Before Forks, one can turn right onto state High-way 110 to spend a few moments at beautiful Rialto Beach, entering into the “treaty area” of the Twilight vampires and werewolves.

Enjoy a picnic and take in sea stack views as fishermen surf-cast into the waves.

Depart Rialto and continue into Forks. Blaze a trail through the Hoh Rain Forest area and splendid fishing rivers like the Bogachiel and Hoh before popping out on the coast.

Stop at Ruby Beach for a scenic walk filled with views of eagles, the Destruction Island Lighthouse and crashing waves, or continue to any number of other roadside beach stops along the way.

Hungry or looking for a place to rest overnight? Go the extra few miles and post up at Olympic National Park’s Kalaloch Campground to grab a bite at the Kalaloch Lodge.

PORT ANGELES: HURRICANE RIDGEA staple for any Peninsula local or tourist alike,

the 17-mile drive up to Hurricane Ridge is worth the twists and turns. This trip requires an Olympic National Park pass.

Single visits for vehicles are $15; individuals on foot, bicycle or motorcycle are $5; and children 15 and younger are admitted free of charge.

An annual pass is $30. Once past the Heart o’ the Hills entrance station,

climb your way past tall pines and dramatic drop-offs.There are several opportunities to stop along the

way to take in views of the Olympic Mountains and pause for a selfie or two with friends.

Cruise through two tunnels until reaching the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center, which is the perfect place to stop for a picnic and a hike for a few hours before heading back down the winding road.

AGNEW/SEQUIM: OLD OLYMPIC HIGHWAYSet out east from Port Angeles on U.S. Highway

101 toward Old Olympic Highway for a short jaunt through the Dungeness Valley/Agnew area.

After taking a left off 101, follow the old highway for wide-open spaces and farmland views reminis-cent of Midwestern countryside.

On a clear blue day, enjoy the smells of hay and horses as you curve onto Cays Road, heading toward Dungeness Bay. Chug along and veer right onto Marine Drive, crawling toward Cline Spit and enjoy-ing the lovely bluff houses and view of the bay.

Take a sharp left down Cline Spit Road to stop for a walk, a picnic or some serene water views.

Chances of seeing a whale are slim, but at least the waterfowl are a sight unto themselves.

PORT TOWNSEND: HISTORIC SEASIDE TOWNTraveling east on U.S. Highway 101, exit onto

state Highway 20 and head northeast for 12 miles to historic Port Townsend.

Founded in 1851, colorful Port Townsend has a rich maritime heritage. Enjoy the twists and turns the highway takes while you play peek-a-boo with the blue waters of Discovery Bay.

The highway turns into Water Street once in town, and runs next to Admiralty Inlet ending at the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

<< continued from Page 8

BRENDA HANRAHAN | Peninsula Daily News

Travel through Port Townsend to Fort Flagler State Park, where the road ends at Point Wilson Lighthouse with an outstanding maritime view of Puget Sound, ships moving through the water and distant islands.

Driving into town, you will pass historic Victorian buildings and storefronts, marinas and working boat yards, restaurants and hotels.

The lively streets of Port Townsend feature plenty of shops and places to dine, street musicians and great views of boats traveling leisurely through Puget Sound.

After exploring the town on foot, grab a bite to eat in Port Townsend or snag a picnic lunch and enjoy a ride by cute cottages and gigantic old houses to reach Fort Flagler State Park and Point Wilson Lighthouse.

For parents, getting their teen in a car and on the road can be a nerve-wracking experience, let alone selecting a young driver’s first car.

Tabatha Meadows, owner of Northwest Driving School, said planning and trusting your instincts will get parents further in this life event that resistance will.

Northwest Driving School, located at 321 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles, offers students ages 15-18 the chance to learn the rules of the road in an “above-and-beyond” course.

“We say to plan for two months at the school,” Meadows said. “I tell them they’ve chosen the sport of the season.”

Parents should clear their teen’s schedule for a total of 30 hours in the classroom, split between 15 two-hour classes, plus a total of 13 hours of in-car instruction.

In-car instruction is split between driving and observation of a driving partner. This, according to Meadows, is more than what is required by the state.

The state of Washington requires that teen drivers complete a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction, a minimum of six hours of practice driving and a minimum of one hour of behind-the-wheel observa-tion, according to the state Department of Licensing website, http://tinyurl.com/PDN-WAdriver.

Advice for getting your teen ready for drivingBy LAURA LOFGREN | Peninsula Daily News and METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS Parents of teen drivers must supervise a total of

50 hours of out-of-class practice time, including 10 hours of nighttime driving.

“We just go above and beyond,” Meadows said.A few other suggestions Meadows has for parents

include “The ‘do as I say, not as I do’ rule doesn’t apply” and “Trust your instincts.”

If a student is correcting a parent’s driving, Mead-ows said, it means he or she is learning. Stay calm and talk it out. If you’re not comfortable taking your teen out on the highway, don’t. Take him or her to a big empty parking lot and work on basic skills first.

Parents and adult drivers seeking lessons can phone Northwest Driving School at 360-565-1000 or visit www.northwestdrivingschoolinc.com for details.

If your teen has already completed driver’s educa-tion and you’re looking to purchase a vehicle for him or her, here are a few shopping tips:

One of the first things a parent may think to do is to surround their child in the biggest, bulkiest vehicle possible.

If an army tank was available, parents might con-sider it. But large trucks and SUVs have a tendency to roll over. Plus, a teenager may think that a bigger vehicle means invincibility.

Industry experts agree that there are some tips parents can follow when selecting a teen’s first car.

n Shop for pre-owned vehicles. Most families are already feeling the heat of overtaxed budgets.

Another car payment could be unaffordable. Plus, insurance premiums for a teenage driver could be very expensive, especially if that teen is driving a brand new car.

Shop for a car that is a few years old. Not only will it have plenty of miles still left in it, but also, if an ac-cident occurs, the repairs likely won’t be as expensive as they would if a new car gets dinged up.

n Seek out sedans. Sure, they may not be the ultra-cool sports car or the behemoth SUV, but sedans are large enough to effectively protect a driver in an accident and will have plenty of room to carpool friends to movies, sports games and such.

n Make children bear some of the financial burden. Parents should consider making their children financially responsible for the car in one way or another.

Whether they contribute a few dollars to the monthly bill or are responsible for oil changes and fuel costs, a financial investment may encourage children to be more careful with the vehicle.

n Teach defensive driving. A vehicle is only as safe as its driver.

Consider defensive-driving courses in addition to the regular driving courses and exams the teen has taken. It will help him or her learn even more about being safe on the road.

Of course, experience through road miles is another way to gain expertise.

Picnic tables are scattered through-out the park and make the perfect place to eat lunch or simply stop to take in the scenic surroundings.

Explore the fort’s old bunkers and stroll along sandy beaches to take in a view of the working lighthouse.

A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access. A day pass costs $10, and an annual pass is $30.

BRINNON TO QUILCENE: SHORT DISTANCE TO OUTSTANDING VIEWS

U.S. Highway 101 hugs the shore of the fjord Hood Canal on the eastern edge of Olympic National Forest and provides plenty of spectacular views along each twist and turn.

One of the most scenic portions of this road is the short distance — about 13 miles — between Brinnon and Quilcene.

Starting in Brinnon, head north to Dosewallips State Park.

The 425-acre park offers year-round camping with 5,500 feet of saltwater shoreline on Hood Canal and 5,500 feet of freshwater shoreline on either side of the Dosewallips River.

The park has an open kitchen shelter, picnic tables, a play area and restrooms.

Five miles of hiking trails offer a great way to stretch one’s legs.

The park is known for its excellent clamming, crabbing, diving, swimming and freshwater and saltwater boating opportunities.

Be sure to stop by the wildlife viewing platform to snap a few photos

<< continued from Page 9 before continuing north to Quilcene. A Discover Pass is required for vehicle

access to state parks for day use.Consider stopping at Seal Rock

Campground to take in views of Hood Canal and the mountains. The location is one of the few U.S. Forest Service campgrounds where the public can harvest oysters.

Two short interpretive trails provide information about Hood Canal’s tideland ecology and Native American history along the canal.

Once on the highway, continue traveling north toward Quilcene.

If it is a clear and sunny day and everyone is up for adventure, start looking for Mount Walker Viewpoint Road.

The road quickly leads to a trail that climbs a steep 2 miles through Doug-las fir, salal and rhododendrons to the north summit of Mount Walker.

Hikers can walk on the road at the top for another half-mile to reach the south viewpoint.

If a hike is not in the cards, a mostly gravel road steeply twists and turns up the mountain for about 4 miles to reach the summit of Mount Walker and outstanding panoramic views of Mount Rainier, Puget Sound and Seattle. Use care when traveling along this narrow and steep road.

After this scenic detour, continue north to Quilcene. Stop for a bite to eat or to wander around the small town’s retail shops, art galleries and other haunts.

Continue driving along U.S. Highway 101 to its junction with state Highway 20, which leads to Port Townsend.
