2 SPECIALISED FIRE RESISTANT DOOR HARDWARE

On average 311 people are killed and 16,000 are injured* in fires eachyear in the UK alone. Many of the casualties are attributable to breathingthe toxic products of combustion from a remote fire.

Fire and smoke also cause extensive damage to building fabric andcontents. £2.52 billion* per annum is the estimated total of fire-relatedlosses. The majority of these deaths, injuries and losses occur in buildingswhere fire and smoke protection measures have been inadequate.

Design Needs and Regulatory Requirements

When fire breaks out in a building the threat is twofold. Firstly, there is the fire itself and the hot smoke generated in theimmediate vicinity. Secondly, there is coldsmoke which will spread rapidly through the building, threatening people andproperty some distance from the fire. The Building Regulations take both thesethreats into account, and supportingdocuments give criteria for how they can be managed. Details can be found in Approved Document B (England & Wales),Technical Booklet E (N Ireland), andTechnical Handbook Section 2 (Scotland).

The Regulations require large buildings to be divided into smaller fire and smokeresistant ‘compartments’, to reduce the riskof damage to the building as a whole andalso to save lives in the case of a fire.Building a fire resistant wall or floor to makea compartment is relatively simple. However,building design becomes much morecomplex when the compartments need tobe linked in some way – essential to make the building usable. Every time an apertureis cut into one of the compartmentboundaries (for example, to install a door in a fire resistant wall, or to pass ductworkthrough a wall or ceiling) the aperture mustbe filled with something that will preservethe fire and smoke integrity of thecompartment. That’s the role of Lorient’sproducts – to work with the surrounding

elements of the building to ensure the fireand smoke resistant compartments aremaintained. Our fire and smoke seals can be fitted into fire rated doors; our glazingproducts can be fitted into doors, screens or fire rated partitions; our air transfer grillescan be installed into doors, walls and ducts.

Fire and smoke protection products mustbe tested to prove their performance – and indeed, separate tests are required for fire and smoke. Our products are allextensively tested, and our test reports arefreely available on request. Just call ourTechnical Services team on 01626 834252.

Letterplates

Doors from common passageways to flats, apartments andoffices are frequently required to be fire and smoke resistant.They may also need to be fitted with a letterplate. Fitting a‘normal’ letterplate assembly would completely negate the fireand smoke resisting properties of a door.

We supply two fire and smoke resistant letterplate models. Our integrated fire/security letterplate can be fitted with a rangeof optional security devices.

Lorient fire and smoke resistant letterplates:

provide protection against fire and smoke at all temperatures whenfitted to previously tested door sets;

provide protection against cold smoke in line with the requirementsof BS 9999 and Approved Document B to the Building Regulations.

11SPECIALISED FIRE RESISTANT DOOR HARDWARE

All door furniture must be fitted in a way which ensures the fire resisting properties of a door aren’t compromised. In manyinstances it’s advised that ironmongery is bedded in intumescentmastic or paste.

A quicker, easier, cleaner and more accurate solution is to useshaped pads of intumescent material. We offer a range of kits designed for use with:

hinges;

locks and latches;

concealed hydraulic door closers (see page 12).

Intumescent Protection Kits Hinge Protection Kits

We supply intumescent protection kits for commonly specified hinges.

These kits provide fire resistance of 30 minutes or 60 minutes when fitted to full size door assemblies and tested in accordancewith BS EN 1363: Pt. 1: 1999.

Lock and Latch Protection Kits

If the lock or latch of a fire resistant door is unprotected, it inevitablyreduces the door’s fire protection performance. We provide auniversal lock kit which enables family groups of mortise locks to beincorporated in fire resistant door leaves, as well as a lock kit which is available to suit larger lock sizes.

These kits provide fire resistance of 30 minutes or 60 minutes when fitted to full size door assemblies and tested in accordancewith BS EN 1363: Pt. 1: 1999.

Both lever and cylinder operators are covered, and there’s no needfor additional intumescent material to be placed behind the strikeplate or for the door and/or frame seal to be continued past theforend or strike plate.

12 SPECIALISED FIRE RESISTANT DOOR HARDWARE

Hydraulic closers concealed in the door leaf are increasingly popular– but they must not be fitted to fire resistant doors withoutappropriate protective measures being taken. This is because:

they require a large portion of the door to be cut away whichimmediately reduces fire resistance;

many models contain flammable hydraulic oil;

the aluminium housings are likely to melt in intense heat leading to a breach;

they are made from materials which are very good heatconductors and take up much of the available door leaf thickness.

Our intumescent protection kits overcome these problems. They consist of a thin, high performance intumescent sheet, pre-cutand scored so that they can be easily fitted around door closers. The kits are self-adhesive for straightforward installation.

Protection kits are available for the most commonly specified closers.

When tested in accordance with BS 476: Pt. 20/22: 1987 it wasshown that our closer protection kits can provide up to 60 minutesprotection, even on 44mm thickness door leaves.

The low pressure intumescent action ensures the door leaf is notsplit. Insulation against heat transfer is provided as soon as theintumescent material is activated.
