BBSI language and professional training focuses on developing communicative ability inindividuals to meet the demands of a fast-moving professional world. Our training programmes
enable participants to develop strategies and English-language communication skills in achallenging and dynamic learning environment. Moreover, the contents of our courses are fluid,and take account of individual needs. Throughout the training there are frequent opportunities
to socialise and visit both professional and cultural places of interest, where trainees havean opportunity to practise their skills.

By providing specialist tutors who have extensive experience in their professional fields, and bycooperating with professional and specialist training providers in different fields, BBSI is able todeliver a wide range of training to corporate and public-sector clients. This training is designed,in full consultation with our clients and their sponsors, to meet precise training objectives. The
courses are tailored accordingly to be flexible and to meet specific learning requirements.
Tailored Training Programmes
BBSI specialised training programmes are designed for small groups of trainees. Course feeswill vary depending on the degree of specialisation, and also depending on the number of courseparticipants. Economics dictate that the higher the number of trainees per course, the lower the
course fees per participant. Courses can be conducted in the UK in English, with substantialEnglish-language elements to develop the necessary communication skills in English, alternatively

School Faci l i t iesThe School occupies 2 prominent and adjoining,centrally located Victorian town-centre buildings,comprising 25 well-equipped classrooms withPowerpoint projector, video and audio equipment.School capacity is around 250 students.
Facilities include 2 fully-networked IT Multi-MediaCentres and a Management Centre that betweenthem offer access to some 30 computers. Internetand e-mail access is available to every studentthrough high-speed, Broadband connection.Additional Internet facilities are available in certainclassrooms that enable real-time access to theInternet for trainees on specialised programmes. TheSchool also provides wired and wireless notebookcomputer facilities, and a Student Common Roomwith satellite television, Internet access andrefreshment facilities.
The School garden is available for recreation
purposes, with appropriate seating, tables and BBQfacilities. There are also 2 compounds for the storageof cycles.
All facilities are available weekly 0815-1700.
Lesson periods are of 45 minutes’ duration.

Furthermore, the surroundingcountryside is some of the most beautiful in Britain.
Travel Details
Bournemouth is less than 2 hours travelling timefrom London by coach, train or car, and provideseasy access to many regional cultural features, aswell as to the cities of Bath, Oxford, Salisbury andSouthampton. On their first morning at BBSI,students participate in a tour of Bournemouth andview those amenities close to the School. Transportfacilities are explained, including those bus routesbetween the Town Centre (the location of BBSI) andareas of host-family accommodation. Most busjourneys in and around Bournemouth take between10 and 20 minutes.

in cyclical modules of skills development, course entry, for those seeking less than the full 12-week option, is recommended only in weeks 1-9 of any academic term.

General English
General English (GE) is a flexible programmethat can comprise 20 (GE 20), 24 (GE 24) or 30(GE 30) lessons weekly. The courses are
organised in modules that can be joined at anytime during the year. Lessons are designed todevelop students’ English language levels in all 4communication skills, as well as develop grammarand build vocabulary. The programme forms thebasis from which Elementary-Level students canprogress to more specialised training.
The GE 20 and 24 courses are available fromElementary to Advanced Level, whilst the GE 30is available at Intermediate Level and above.These courses can be joined on any Mondaythroughout the year, with a maximum class sizeof 12. Individuals are tested on arrival andplaced in international classes at appropriatelanguage levels.

The 4-12-week course Academic English withIELTS (AEI) comprises 30 lessons weekly andis designed for students with a minimum
Intermediate level in English (IELTS 4.5) whorequire an internationally recognised Englishlanguage qualification to prove their languageability to universities or employers. The AEI isespecially suited to students who have eitherreceived a firm offer from a UK university orcollege, or have yet to choose their universitycourse. The AEI comprises 20 lessons ofGeneral English weekly, plus 10 lessons ofIELTS preparation. Entry is throughout the year,with a maximum class size of 12. Individuals aretested on arrival and placed in internationalclasses at appropriate language levels.
IELTS Examination Preparation. The IELTSelements focus on all 4 language skills, withstructured development and practice so thatstudents can approach the IELTS examinationwith confidence.

The English with IT Skills course comprises 26 (EIT26) or 30 (EIT 30) lessons weekly. This course isdesigned to develop all 4 language skills and
grammar usage, as well as build vocabulary anddevelop effective language skills. The 6 IT lessonsweekly offer tutor-guided project work, the use of avariety of basic IT software packages and the full ICDL*syllabus.

Aviation English Aviation EnglishICAO has decreed that the English-languageproficiency standard for aircraft operators mustbe standardised. BBSI offers flexibly structuredaviation English training courses for pilots, airtraffic controllers and other aviation professionalsadapted to meet the requirements of the ICAOguidelines. Courses are designed for smallgroups of trainees to meet the preciserequirements of individual sponsors. Thestructure and content of courses vary dependingon the respective training objectives and theEnglish-language entry level of participants.
BBSI employs fully-approved CAA trainers andexaminers to offer training courses and testing inAviation English. General-language developmentis conducted in small international classes atappropriate language levels, while specialisedAviation English training is conducted in closed-focus groups targeting particular specialisations.
ICAO Aviation English Levels 2, 3, 4 & 5
Study programmes are conducted in groups ofup to 12 trainees at ICAO Levels 2, 3, 4, or 5, asappropriate. Courses comprise 40 lessonsweekly (25 hours) of direct-contact tuition andpractice. Course breakdown is as follows:

Subsequent Testing. All air traffic controllersand pilots will require an ICAO Operational Level4 Certificate from an approved training/testingcentre prior to 5 March 2008. BBSI can arrangeto conduct all necessary testing on behalf ofclients at a later date, once final ICAO testingcriteria are established and published.

BBSI is a core partner in thecurrent Linguapeace EuropeProject, which is sponsored by theEuropean Commission. This project involves 13member institutions from 11 separate EU/NATOmember states. The aim of this project is to meetthose objectives of European Security and DefencePolicy that relate to conflict prevention and requirehigh language proficiency among Europeanpeacekeepers. One distinguishing feature ofLinguapeace Europe is that the project providesgraded materials for military language training, whichcan be utilised in realistic scenarios worldwide byexperienced military and police personnel involved inpeacekeeping operations. BBSI draws on theseimpressive materials for its training programmes.
BBSI utilises only MODLEB-approvedexaminers for testing purposesprovided by the University of
Westminster. The University has along-standing relationship with theBritish MOD in respect of languagetesting, is a prominent member ofMODLEB and has been the MODcontract partner for designing and
delivering language examinations inMilitary English at NATO STANAG
Levels SLP1, 2, 3 & 4. The Universityof Westminster has managed thatservice for nearly 10 years and hasutilised its experience with foreign-
language testing to design anddeliver a suite of monolingual Englishexaminations. All examination papersare approved by a MODLEB ‘setting
board’ within the MOD prior todelivery. This ensures that the
language levels set correspond to theNATO language descriptors and that

In association with a consortium of senior andexperienced British police trainers, BBSI offersprofessional international police training in thefields of Command & Control, Crime Investigation,Management and Forensic Science. Courses canbe conducted either in the UK or overseas, and aretailored to meet the precise requirements of theClient and to meet national police trainingstandards.
The BBSI police training services are structured toensure that participants receive focused,appropriate, nationally-recognised and practicaltraining, specifically relevant to their respectiveroles and responsibilities. Moreover, all courses aredesigned to enhance both the knowledge andpractical skills of the participants so as to improvetheir effectiveness and efficiency in an operationalenvironment.

Client Needs Analysis
Often, prior to conducting large trainingprogrammes for overseas clients, our seniorspecialists are invited to conduct a needs analysisof local training requirements. Such a project cantake 7, 14 or 21 working days, depending on theprecise requirement; however, the results can saveconsiderable expenditure by targeting thesubsequent training offered effectively to meetspecific training needs.
Scope of a Needs Analysis. A Needs Analysis willexamine the current processes and facilitiesrelated to a specific specialisation and identify theprecise training requirements. The objective is todevelop knowledge of current professional practiceand compare the outcomes with the advancedlevels of knowledge within that specialisation thatis currently available internationally.
The Analysis Team will review and examine currentpractices within the target areas and makerecommendations to the Client in support ofstrategic plans to improve knowledge and skillswithin specific Force specialisations, enhanceoverall performance within those specialisationsand improve service delivery by the Force as awhole.
Advantages. The Analysis Team will be able toidentify precise training requirements and theClient will subsequently benefit from theadvantages of ‘bespoke’ training programmes,specially designed to meet local needs. Thismethod of approach is considered far moreefficient and cost effective than a client merelyaccepting generic ‘off-the-shelf’ training that mightbe of limited effectiveness. Additional benefitswould see more effective targeting in the future of
both training and Force resources so as to meetlocal ongoing requirements.
Methodology. Evaluation and examination isconducted by way of visits to the various targetdepartments within the Force and by means offocussed interviews with appropriate personnel,both individually and in groups. An Analysisexamines materials, equipment, facilities,administration, organisation, command and controlstructure, current policing strategies, otherbackground information et al.
Outcome. At the conclusion of a Needs Analysis,our specialists submit a written report to the Clientfor consideration. This report contains short,medium and long-term recommendations for futuretraining requirements, and includes course outlinesfor those training programmes recommended tomeet potential needs. Adoption of this process andthe open willingness to learn from the experienceof others will support future learning. Existing skillswill be enhanced and the ability to ‘benchmark’with other police forces, will be achievable. Theprocess would also support the view that all policetraining must stem from the same doctrine. Ministry of Defence Language Examining Board (MODLEB)BBSI utilises only MODLEB-approved examiners for testing purposes provided
by the University of Westminster. The University has a long-standing relationship with theBritish MOD in respect of language testing, is a prominent member of MODLEB and hasbeen the MOD contract partner for designing and delivering language examinations inMilitary English at NATO STANAG Levels SLP1, 2, 3 & 4. The University of Westminster
has managed that service for nearly 10 years and has utilised its experience withforeign-language testing to design and deliver a suite of monolingual English
examinations. All examination papers are approved by a MODLEB ‘setting board’within the MOD prior to delivery. This ensures that the language levels set correspond
to the NATO language descriptors and that the content of each examination reflects thecurrent operational duties of professional military personnel. These examinations are
currently used as the profiling mechanism for all students attending English-language training as part of the UK Defence Diplomacy Policy scheme at

Work Placement
It is now broadly recognised that work placementsform a valuable part of business training andpreparation, both in professional and culturalcontexts. BBSI was a pioneer in this field and hasbeen providing work opportunities since 1996. TheSchool has developed an outstanding reputation forquality of service in this field and can now provideaccredited work placements in partnership with thenational awarding body, NCFE.
The School has developed a wide network of bothlocal and national businesses who acceptinternational trainees, and BBSI works closely withthese employers to ensure that trainees benefit fullyfrom the often challenging experience of working inthe UK.
Professional Placements
BBSI can arrange professional placements inindustry, commerce, retail trades, and elsewhere.Such placements are suitable for trainees with anupper-Intermediate to Advanced level in English, ieIELTS 6.0, who have work experience in their owncountry. The aim is for trainees to broaden theirexperience in a vocational environment, as well ashone their English-language skills, with a view toimproving their careers, as well as their knowledgeand experience. Placements are for up to 12 weeksduration, and would follow a minimum of 4 weeksstudy at BBSI.
The choice of course to be studied, prior to eachplacement, is for each student to decide. However,BBSI would recommended the year-roundCommunications & Business Skills programme, orone or more terms of a diploma course. Trainees willthen be placed in work with a business that iscomplementary to their current or planned career.The work undertaken during the period of placementis unpaid, and should be considered as part of theongoing training programme. Trainees shouldunderstand that they cannot specify a particularcompany or location for their placement. BBSI willclosely monitor the progress of each trainee duringtheir placement to ensure that the experience is asatisfactory one for all concerned.
BBSI has previously provided placements in a widerange of fields, including the following:

Course Outcomes
On successful completionof a Work Placementprogramme, students willbe issued with a BBSICertificate of Placement, and an NCFE Certificate ofWork Placement. Each individual will also berequired to produce a Work Portfolio of theirexperiences for future employment applications. Insome cases, employers may also provide individualswith a work reference.
Terms & Conditions
Please note that the following terms and conditionsapply for professional work placements:
A placement is not guaranteed and is subject tothe trainee successfully passing an interview.
The trainee must be as flexible as possibleconcerning the type of placement he/she isseeking.
Should a trainee be successful at interview, thetrainee is obligated to take up that workplacement. In these circumstances, BBSI is underno obligation toarrange a furtherwork placementinterview.
Should atraineebe unsuccessfulat interview,BBSI willarrange furtherinterviews, to amaximum of 3.
Should a trainee beunsuccessful in all 3interviews for work,there will be no refundof fees.
Trainees shouldunderstand that if placed,they are representing BBSI andshould act with integrity andprofessionalism.
Trainees should understand that, if theyare asked to leave their placement forreasons of misconduct, BBSI will not findthem another placement and there wouldbe no refund.

ReportingThe BBSI continuous-assessment system has been developed as a rigorous alternative
to a formal examination system, and is designed both to support study and tocontribute to the motivation of students on professional and vocational programmes.Assignments are set regularly to assess the achievement of learning outcomes, and
may be in the form of the following:
• written assignments (essays, reports, case studies)• progress tests
• research & analysis • preparation of presentations
• business simulations• portfolio work
To ensure grading is consistent and fair, careful guidelines are set and double marking
is carried out to meet BBSI and NCFE requirements.
Failure to present work of a satisfactory quantity or quality can result in awards being withheld; however,students can elect to resubmit work to achieve the highest possible grade.
Up to 1000 words per term of written work to be submitted, whichmust be of a professional standard and meet set deadlines.

WelfareBBSI has developed a unique understanding ofinternational students. It is recognised thatindividuals have widely different welfare andcultural needs. Welfare staff are therefore on
