Failure of normal ground controls Where the normal ground controls fail; an appointed person familiarised in the use

of the ground controls will use the ground auxiliary controls to safely lower

the platform

Failure of ALL normal and auxiliary lowering functions Where all normal and auxiliary functions have failed a qualified person, and

a service technician should be contacted.

Team leader to identify at the start of service.

A mid-air, platform to platform rescue should only be considered in exceptional circumstances and only after:-

> All normal and auxiliary lowering procedures have been attempted and the platform cannot be lowered.

> Site management have contacted the appropriate service technician listed in the rescue plan, to report failure of normal and auxiliary lowering systems

and request servicing assistance. If the service technician is unable to affect a timely repair to allow the machine to be brought to the ground safely site

management should be contacted for permission to carry out mid-air rescue. Or where the service technician assistance is not readily available and an

immediate risk exists to the health and safety of any of the occupants from remaining in the MEWP until a technician can arrive, then site management

should be contacted for authorisation to carry out mid-air rescue.

Basket-To-Basket RescueIf it is not possible to repair the lowering mechanisms then a basket-to-basket rescue may be necessary. This can be complicated and poses

additional health and safety risks so it is important to follow the following steps:

• The rescue machine should be placed in the safest position to minimise any additional danger to anyone involved in the rescue

• Place the two machines adjacent to each other with the smallest possible gap between them

• Attach a double lanyard to both the person being rescued and the anchor points on both machines before the rescue takes place

• Never overload the rescue machine as this could lead to over-tipping or delay the rescue operation

• In exceptional circumstances where a basket-to-basket rescue is not feasible, emergency evacuation systems such as a crane rescue could be

used.

Respiratory disease

assessment

Introduction

A respiratory sensitiser is defined as a substance which can induce changes in the immune

system of susceptible workers such that respiratory symptoms will present themselves on

future exposure to the substance even at very low doses.

Breathing in substances called respiratory sensitisers at work can cause respiratory diseases

such as asthma. Further exposure to hazardous substances can lead to conditions such as

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and silicosis.

What are the symptoms of sensitisation?

The symptoms are:

Respiratory Sensitiser Checklist

1. Are your employees exposed to respiratory sensitisers? Look at your workplace

and all the activities taking place, to see if there is anything in use or being

created, which may cause asthma.

listing common sensitisers and other associated activities: Exposure

Substance Group Activity

(a) Isocyanates Vehicle paint spraying; foam manufacturing( No

(b) Flour/grain/hay Handling grain at docks; malting, baking, milling No

(c) Glutaraldehyde Disinfecting instruments No

(d) Wood dusts Woodworking, sawmilling No

(e) Electronic soldering No

(f) flux No

(g) Electronic assembly No

(h) Some glues/resins Curing of epoxy resins No

2. Have you carried out an assessment of the risks created by such exposure? Yes

Try to eliminate the substance altogether, or replace it with one that is less harmful

Notes: Replacement where possible with less harmful chemicals.

Issue of steamers. Extract cleaning preferred method is scrappers and

aggitation rather than chemical. Trialed seaweed based cleaners.

3. Have you identified and implemented the measures needed to prevent or Yes

control exposure to the respiratory sensitiser(s)?

Notes:

Issue of P.P.E. Training manuals on usage. Distribution of COSHH data sheets.

Issue of breath masks, googles. Training. Onsite inspections and retrains.

COSHH training with chemical supplier A&D.

4. Have you informed, instructed and trained your employees as No

appropriate inrelation to respiratory sensitisers?
