Nevada Lawyer is featuring a different specialty bar section each month. This month, we are profiling the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys (SNAWA). We spoke with Diane Welch, president of the organization, to discuss it. Nevada Lawyer: What is your organization’s main purpose or mission? Diane Welch: We have three main priorities. The first is education in the form of CLEs and other informative speakers. We promise our members at least four CLEs a year. Our second priority is providing scholarships, and each year we fund three scholarships for current students at the William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV. Finally, we focus on networking and camaraderie for our members. NL: What are the benefits of joining Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys? DW: The benefits date back to what the founders had in mind when they created the organization in the 1970s. Shelley Berkley was our first president in 1979, and the focus was to unite women attorneys and provide legal education. Today, SNAWA is a forum to earn CLEs while enjoying lunch with other members, sponsors and visitors. My goal as president has been to modernize the organization to appeal to younger women attorneys, while maintaining the goals and ideas of our founders. Some of our founding members remain active, and we truly value their input. Plus, we enjoy hearing their perspective of how things used to be when women attorneys were required to wear skirts and nylons, and judges called you honey from the bench. We are modernizing by increasing our presence on social media and offering more events and happy hour mixers in the evenings. SNAWA also offer access to judges, many of whom were once SNAWA presidents, and continue to attend our events and luncheons. Our members enjoy the opportunity to network with each other and develop friendships and referral resources while meeting other attorneys facing similar challenges. For example, if you find work-life balance a challenge, are struggling with a difficult case or wonder about best practices when appearing before a particular judge, other attorneys may have helpful insight for handling those situations. NL: How many members do you have? DW: We currently have 120 paid members, and 575 on our eBlast mailing list. NL: How can readers join the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys? DW: New or returning members can join or renew through our website at www. snawa.com – or while attending one of our monthly luncheons, which are held the first Thursday of every month. We welcome regular members, associate members, and student members of all genders and practice areas. Nevada Lawyer: What is your organization’s main purpose or mission?

Diane Welch: We have three main priorities. The first is education in the form of CLEs and other informative speakers. We promise our members at least four CLEs a year.
