TYPES OF SPECIFIC The specific gravity of a soi l mass

for use in soi l s engineering calculat ions i s usual ly expressed in three di f-

fe r e n t fo r m s : (a ) t h e s p e c ific gr a v it y o f s o lid s , appl i ed to so i l s

f iner than the No. 4 s ieve; (b) the apparent speci f ic gravi ty , and (c)

the bu lk spec i f i c g rav i ty , both a n d being applied to soils

coarser than the No. 4 s ieve. The specific gravity of sol ids is not applied

to coarse par t i c l es because they normal ly conta in vo ids f rom which a i rcannot be d i sp laced un less the par t i c l es a re ground in to f iner par t i c l es to

e lim i na t e t he voids . Thu s , when d ea ling wit h coa r se r pa r t ic le s it is m ore

convenient to work wi th the apparent speci f ic gravi ty of the part ic le mass.

T h e v a l u e or is used in a l l calculat ions involving fundamental

p rope r t ie s o f a s o il m a ss . The bu lk spec ific gravit y is u sed in s pecia l

gravi ty of sol ids , G of a soil is the ratio of the weight in air of a given

volume of soi l part icles at a stated temperature to the weight in air of an

equa l vo lume of d i s t i l l ed water a t a s t a t ed t empera ture .

of a ll o f the sam ple from the flask . Oven-dry the sa mple to a cons tan tweight at a temperature of . C. Allow the soil to cool to room tempera-

ture in a desiccator and determine the weight of the soil to the nearest 0.01 g.

( 2 ) O v e n - d r i e d s o i l s . The p rocedure fo r de te rmin ing the spe-

cific of solids for oven-dried soils shall consist of the following steps:

(a ) Rec or d in fo r m a t io n id e n t ifyin g th e s a m p le o n t h e

data sheet (see Plate 1).

(b ) Oven-dry the soil constant weight a t 5 C a n d

coo l it t o room tempera tu re in a des icca to r . Se lec t a r epresen ta t ive sa mp le

of between g (for cohesive soils) and 150 g (for cohesionless soils) and

weigh the sample to the nearest g. After weighing, transfer the soil to a

volumetr ic f lask, taking care not to lose any material during this operat ion.

To avoid possible loss of preweighed soil , the sample may be weighed

af t e r t r ansfe r to the f l ask . Fil l the f lask approximately half ful l with

ai red dis t i l led water and a l low the suspension to s tand overnight .

(c ) Con n e c t t h e fla sk t o t h e va c u u m lin e a n d a p p ly a

vacuum of approximately 29.0 in . mercury for approximately 2 to 4 hr .
