Introduction

Most Windows User and PC vendors will prefer XP to Vista because of STABILITY and SPEED. If Vista can counter this 2 problems, it will be the better choice of operating system.

5 reasons to use Vista if you purchase new PC:

1. Vista is cool – Interface nicer. 2. Vista can be faster if you know what you are doing. 3. Vista provides better security 4. Vista provides better multimedia experience, better sound video support. 5. You don’t want to double pay Microsoft when Vista SP2 finally launch!

I urge anyone of you who is thinking getting XP for your new machine, think twice because XP will be replaced by Vista eventually. What your concern about Vista stability and speed will be solved in this guide, so stick with Vista.

This guide will be separated into 8 steps:

Step 1 - Recommended Hardware and Software

The Hardware Selection Guide

Only one principle in selecting hardware for Vista: At least 2 GB RAM!

Other parts are not as critical, but the faster the better, below are my recommended list:

Core 2 Duo / Quad processor At least 2 GB RAM, 4 GB is recommended, preferably high performance RAM RAID supported motherboard (not required if using hybrid or solid state hard disk) 2 High performance hard disk (Western Digital Raptor 10K rpm) / solid state hard disk / hybrid hard disk 1 GB Vista Ready USB 2.0 Flash Drive Vista Ready 256MB 3D Video Card Vista Ready Keyboard and Mouse (preferably support Vista deep sleep) Any main stream processor should perform well, so this is least of my concern. Remember to upgrade your memory to at least 2 GB, or this guide will not make Vista perform to its’ maximum.

If you already using hybrid or solid state hard disk, you can skip the RAID supported motherboard. Hybrid hard disk is different from conventional hard disk by integrating huge amount of cache RAM, in theory, it will reduce the power consumption and provides far more faster read write speed!

Some hybrid hard disk is not mature, at least it can’t perform anywhere close to the theory, the cost vs performance simply doesn’t worth it! Do some research before selecting hybrid hard disk.

In the other hand solid state hard disk is extremely fast, but the cost is too high. You need to decide if the performance worth the price. I know enthusiast like performance over price…

The tradeoff between this is to get 2 high performance hard disk, use RAID 0 / stripped volume to combined both hard disk speed and provide better access!

RAID 0 – In theory, will make your hard disk read or write the same file simultaneously. Let’s say you have a file with 5 MB size, if you set your hard drive (D) on RAID 0 with 2 hard disk, the file will be separated into 2 portion, each reside on 1 hard disk.

When Windows save the file, both hard disks will write half of the file simultaneously, hence the speed will be double! But actual speed increase is far less, around 30% faster if compared to 1 hard disk. There are just too many overheads to synchronize such action!

I won’t be too picky about 3D video card, unless you are serious gamer, normal 3D video with 256 MB RAM should be sufficient.

All hardware should support Vista hybrid sleep mode, this feature can let you boot your Windows in 5 seconds! So remember to check carefully.



The Software Selection Guide

**Vista Edition**

Home Basic – Personally, I would recommend you to avoid it or upgrade to at least Home premium, the features just too little.

Home Premium – Get this if you want the default multimedia function.

Business – Get this if you want more performance feature such as dynamic volume support.

Ultimate – Everything you need. With the price dropped, I think ultimate will be my choice!

**Backup Software**

You need hard drive image backup software to fast secure your Vista and settings, you can backup and restore your entire Windows in 10 minutes! Do not save money on the backup, you time worth much more than this.

Paragon Drive Backup – Cheap and effective solution, interface and technology is not as fancy and powerful as Acronis TrueImage, but serve its’ purpose with minimum cost!

Acronis TrueImage – The best and feature rich backup solution, but almost double the price of Paragon drive backup.

There are some other FREE backup solution, but I find them not as cost effective as the above mention tools. Take longer to backup and restore, no proper support and I only recommend FREE solution for computer expert with lot’s of troubleshooting experience.

**Security Software**

When comes to real-time monitoring software, your need to find something small, fast and effective, the best is able to give you the protection while no performance impact.

Bitdefender – Cheap and feature rich Anti Virus, highly recommended by all major site such as TopTenReviews.com, PC Magazine, PC World and PC Advisor.

Eset – Fastest and least resources consumed Anti Virus, recommended if you don’t mind paying more.

Max Secure Spyware Detector – World fastest and yet effective Anti Spyware. The claim is not hype, download the software and see for yourself! Not only the scan speed is impressive, but the spyware database size will impress you even more.

These are the software you should prepared, once Vista clean installed, before connect to the Internet, proper backup and security software must be in place or you might lost your work due to corruption or Virus, spyware and malware infection!

Step 2 - Strip and Speed Up Vista Installer

In this step, I am going to introduce you the very sexy stripper – vLite!

vLite is a powerful Vista installer generator, your first step will be download and install it from www.vlite.net.

Next, copy your Vista Installation disk to a directory. In this example, I am using D drive and the Vista installer is copied in the folder called Vista. (D:\Vista)

Launch vLite and this is what it’s looks like:

Select the installer directory, then identify which edition your Vista is:

Check all boxes.

Figure 3 In this section, if you have any hot fixes download from Microsoft, you can include into the installer.

Now go to the next section, components. When the compatibility screen popup, just cancel it.



Just cancel this compatibility screen.

In this screen, you will check to remove any unnecessary components.

You are safe to check all “Accessories”, but you might want to retain some functions such as Paint, Snipping Tool, Wordpad and Windows Sidebear.

If you already have the “Drivers” disks for all your hardware, check to remove all Drivers!



You are safe to check all “Games”, but you might want to retain Game Explorer.

I would recommend you keep all Hardware Support, unless you are certainly sure you do not need any of them. Some I recommend you to check and remove:

1. Fax Support 2. Firewire 3. iSCSI 4. Modem 5. Smart Card

If you do not need foreign “Languages” support, check all to remove them.

I recommend you keep all “Multimedia”, uncheck them. However, if you want to remove some of the function, check those that you think unnecessary to you.

Some “Network” functions are not needed: Check to remove Network Projector, Internet Information Server and Windows Mail.

In the “Services”, check Computer Browser, Error Reporting, IP Helper, Microsoft DFS Replication, Offline files and Windows Search. You should definitely check and remove Windows Search, consume too many resources for this service, use Google desktop instead (desktop.google.com).

Finally the “System”, check Beep, Microsoft Agent, Natural Language, Parental Controls, Security Center, Sync Center, Tablet PC, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and Zip Folder.

You should decide which function and services you need, I am just recommending for normal home user. Check any unwanted features to remove from the Installer.

1. Control Panel – Classic View – Disable 2. Show extensions for known file types – Yes 3. Show hidden files and folders – Yes 4. Show protected operating system files – No

Internet Explorer

1. IE Phishing Filter – Disable 2. IE Phishing Verification Balloon Tips – Disable

Next, preset your product key and confirm accept EULA. Skip user creation and set your Administrator password.

Then preset your regional information.

Finally click apply to start stripping the installer. Select “Rebuild one” then OK button.

After stripped your installer, now create the ISO image or split the ISO image or direct burn into a CD or DVD.

1. Select the operation you wish. 2. Start making ISO. 3. You may also split your installer into multiple disks.

After created the installation CD / DVD, you can now start to install Vista in the next step.

You should noticed the installation is faster and less interaction need.



Step 3 - Plan and Initial Configuration for Faster Recovery

For every new computer installation, I would recommend the following partitions:

C drive – Operating System D drive – Data and backup

Vista in the other hand, I would recommend 3 partitions:

C drive – Operating System D drive – Normal Data and backup E drive – Documents that needs versioning

Vista Business and Vista Ultimate allow document saved to keep multiple versions, you can recover or revert to previous version any time!

If you plan this properly, you can backup your C drive image into D drive any time, and the recovery from D drive back to C will not alter or override any data saved.

This way you will be able to recover your Vista in 10 minutes, even from Virus and Spyware infection!

Even though you separate your operating system from data, I would highly recommend you backup your precious data into physical separate drive.

OK, let’s get started into the installation process:

Put the Installation disc into your computer, and start installing…

As you can see, you only need to select next, no other confirmation needed!

Next, go to Windows menu and type “netplwiz” then enter, this will bring up the User Accounts setting screen. Uncheck “Users must …” then OK button, you will be prompt the password for login.

Next, type “msconfig” from the Windows menu, select “Disable UAC” then click the Launch button. Restart when you are finished.

Perform Windows Update Now, this step is extremely critical in Stabilizing Vista, take some time to perform the update before starting to backup.

If you already purchase a hard disk image backup software, now is the time to backup the settings. In this example, I will show you how to use Paragon Drive Backup. Please move your document to drive D before proceed.

Click on the Back Up button now.

From this menu, check C Drive, and press the Next button.

You will be prompt to enter the location to save your hard disk image.



In this example, I am using drive D.

Click Apply button to start backup.

After finished, you can try any settings to your Windows without any worry! Just safe guard the backup on drive D, you can recover all your settings in 10 minutes!

You need to move the document folder to drive D / E before starting the backup (If you want to use document versioning, set your document to E, because document versioning required System Restore, which I would recommend you to turn it off on other drives, such as C and D), so next time you won't have to worry about your data and documents when you perform the recovery.




Another good and popular alternative is Acronis TrueImage, although a bit pricey, but gives you more options! Both software will do the backup and restore in 10 minutes (depending your Windows size), get either one. If you are using Norton Ghost or other hard disk imaging software, I seriously do not think they perform as good, so I urge you to get one of the above software.

Next, disable all System Restore feature on your Hard disk, except drive E which dedicated for documentation and versioning! (Versioning is only available on Business and Ultimate, however you can “Hack” to other edition with this software: Shadow Explorer.

After all backup done, it is time for you to disable “ReadyBoost” and “Superfetch” service for the moment.

Vista will constantly record and interfere with your operation, I would recommend you to turn them off during initial installation to cut down the overheads, this is not a required action.

Install all necessary software, such as instant messenger – Skype, MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger…, Anti Virus, Anti Spyware, Download Accelerator, Hardware drivers, Google toolbar, Microsoft Office, OpenOffice and any software you needed !

Next step we will be discussing Internet and network security more in-depth, please take this seriously, because wrong decision will make you pay, a very high price !

Step 4 - Secure Your Windows and Network Traffic

When come to securing your Windows, I think most of you already have some kind of protection, and many has chosen FREE solution, I respect that and urge you to do so if you have a tight budget or no budget at all ! At least you are protected.

I am a bit picky, I need the best protection but I don’t want any of those software to slow down my computer, so I always try to find the fastest and most effective virus protection software.

If you are using AVG Free Advisor, you are protected. However, you will pay a price of slower scanning and delay in performance, may be you are not aware until you try other software I recommended below:

Bitdefender – I am not trying to hard sale anything, don’t trust me but give it a try! You should gain 5~10% more speed with just a change to this Anti Virus.

Eset – Eset Nod32 is my favorite, but the price has gone up, a lot! If you have budget, this product will give you even more performance and faster scanning.

If you are reading this book, uninstall your Anti Virus and try my recommendation Now! Tell me if you do not gain any performance and I will stop pushing…!!! But I think you will like it.

If you are using Norton, McAfee, PC Shield, Kaspersky and Trend Micro, I think you better stay with AVG, at least it is FREE, your computer is definitely going to slow down by these heavy weight bodyguard.

Before you test any Anti Spyware, please backup your hard disk image and prepare to be hijack!

Many unknown brand is actually injecting Spyware into your computer during installation, then force you to buy their product. I recently tested over 20 types of Anti Spyware, and 70% of the time the “Anti Spyware” is Spyware itself! Please be careful, at least it proves my Bitdefender is working ☺!

When you look at the real-time protection, how can you not feel safe? Do you Notice that I disable the Tracking Cookie Protection? Bit overkill, some of my membership website cannot work and I have to disable it!

I urge every reader of this book to take some time to evaluate the security software, setup your protection strategy to safe guard not just your Credit Card, but also your privacy and work.

Virus and Spyware will slows down your Windows and Internet connection, make you unproductive, if you encounter such symptom, please be careful and be prepared to reinstall everything:

1. Windows slows down obviously. 2. Some time Windows or application comes to a freeze. 3. Frequent breakdown and crashed Anti Virus. 4. Extremely slow internet connection.

Your computer might already been infected. Please take your time to plan and follow this guide to reinstall your Operating System.

Many of my friends and subscribers ask me about the how to speed up their Internet connection and my first question: What Anti Virus and Anti Spyware you are using?

The answers I got:

1. None or Outdated – Download AVG Free Advisor. 2. Only Anti Virus – Get a proper Anti Spyware.

After installing the proper protection software, they seems to be infected, I doubt that they can clean them all without proper reinstallation.

If you find your computer infected, do a proper reinstallation. Backup everything and re-format your hard disk or your computer will not be 100% clean…!

To enhance your Windows security, you should re-enable User Account Control (UAC) after all software installed, then try to create a normal user account for normal use.

This will almost blocked all potential Virus and Spyware, but the annoying prompt from UAC will always be there.

OK, let try Bitdefender and Spyware Detector, and let me know your result.

Step 5 - Install and Reallocate Resources for Your Software

After all software installed, you should backup your hard drive, then download and install a program called “Process Lasso”.

You can assign any program with a lower priority and less processor using Process Lasso.

By lowering the priority of any background process, you can free more resources for foreground application. If you are using multi-core processor, you can assign a specific CPU to the process, instead of all being use.

Try to set all your start up process with a priority of “Lower” or “Idle”.

In my research, I found that this program helps to smoothen all processes, eliminates most of the freeze and abnormal behavior problems.

Launch the program and right click on any of the process; you can set the priority and CPU affinity here. Down below is the activities log, you can see how the process being set.

You can try boosting the foreground process priority and seeing if this helps your application.

Remember to check “General settings”, and make sure Process Lasso will start up at login.

You may want to try Process Tamer as well, both serve the same function except Process Tamer does not allow CPUs assign.

If you want more security, completely wipe out the spyware and virus, you need to enable User Account Control and use this tool to its’ full potential.

Auslogics Disk Defrag is the best defragmentation tool for Vista and XP and it’s free! If you like it, you may also find the Auslogics BoostSpeed interesting, but this is not free.

Free Registry Defrager

Free Registry Defrager will compact and rearrange your registry, but this tool will not scan and clean for you. You can click the link at the bottom to purchase the full version that comes with detect and cleaning.

However, my favorite registry cleaner is Registry Easy. Just follow the link and download this product, you will see what I meant.

Registry Easy is the only few tools that can detect most registry problems, you can compare to other registry cleaner and I bet none gives you so much detected errors’ count.

Next step I will show you a critical part of Vista – ReadyBoost, and how you can use a normal, incompatible flash drive to accelerate application loading.




Step 7 - Enable or Force ReadyBoost

Many Vista users might already heard this technology before, but how does it actually help Vista to speed up loading? Most people will think this is something like Virtual memory in Windows – The page file system. Nevertheless, the fact is, ReadyBoost uses flash drives like cache, try to speed up the read and smoothen the write operation.

To use ReadyBoost, just plug in the USB flash drive, right click on the drive and select properties. You should saw a ReadyBoost Tab in the Properties popup.

For any computer equip with 4 GB, set your flash drive to 512 MB should be sufficient. I use ReadyBoost only to smoothen the application loading, if the size too big might affect its’ efficiency (Not Confirm).

To use ReadyBoost, you also need to enable Superfetch. Although in my research show ReadyBoost can run independent of Superfetch, but it seems like everything is slower without Superfetch.

Re-enable ReadyBoost and Superfetch after all start up related software installed.

If you find any abnormal behavior after running some time, clear your prefetch folder in C:\Windows\Prefetch and restart your computer 3 times.

Allow 2~5 minutes each time for Superfetch to adapt, you may use it normally during the time, just don’t pay too much attention to the annoying hard disk movement, it will stop eventually.



If your flash drive does not support ReadyBoost, this screen will appears.

Just uncheck “Stop retesting…”, then go to registry editor by typing “regedit” in the Windows menu.

Find this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\EMDgmt.

You will see a list of USB drives represent by some strange words:

Find the key that represent your USB flash drive, and then select it, find “Device Status” at the right pane, change the value to “2” and then OK. Also change “ReadSpeedKBs” and “WriteSpeedKBs” to “1000”.

Unplug your USB drive and re-plug again, now select it and right click the properties, the ReadyBoost Tab appeared! Set the ReadyBoost size accordingly.

Step 8 - Diagnostic and Speed Up Internet Settings

In my experience, most of the time sluggish Internet speed is cause by:

1. Virus and Spyware Infection 2. Hardware Incompatibility

If you have followed Step 4 – Secure Your Windows and Network Traffic, you computer should be safe, in this step I will show you how to ensure all your hardware is Vista compatible.

Use Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool from Microsoft to diagnose your router and network hardware. This tool is not for cooperate network stayed behind the hardware firewall; use it if you are in a small or home network.

You need Internet Explorer for the testing, and there are 6 part of testing:

1. Basic Internet Connectivity Test – I don’t think you will fail this, or else you won’t be able to reach this testing page!

2. Network Address Translator Type – Most modern router should support this function.

3. Traffic Congestion Test – Test to see if your router supports Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN), a build in mechanism to adjust itself to traffic congestion for the maximum speed.

4. TCP High Performance Test – Vista will constantly adjust its’ TCP settings for the maximum throughput, only if this test show “supported”. You need to disable TCP Auto tuning if you failed this test.

5. UPnP Supported Test – Some software or hardware need this protocol to automatic establish port connection.

6. Multiple Simultaneous Connection States Test – Will test the router to establish 80 concurrent connections to the server, if your router failed this test, get a new one!

You can disable TCP Auto Tuning with this command:

“netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disable”

However, I urge you to get a new router or modem, this hardware are very cheap and if your hardware pass all test, your Internet connection should be very fast.

Vista Internet connection has been optimizing by Vista “TCP Auto Tuning”, you should not have that problem, if you failed the test, just disable auto tuning and use it temporarily.

After you get the new modem and router, re-enable “Tcp Auto Tuning” with this command:

“netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal”

Scan and remove your registry entries frequently, also defrag you drive and registry regularly, this will speed up application loading dramatically.
