Races 18/19 - Eastern Creek I Introduction
Many of the scribes peering out of Sydney Motorsport Park’s garage-top media centre will more than likely be setting their gaze beyond the race track this weekend.
The size of the crowd lapping up the action from the circuit’s grandstand and surrounding grassed mounds will be of more interest than the on-track activity to some as the championship races at the Western Sydney venue for the first time since 2008.
Eastern Creek - as it was known until being rebranded midway through this year - and its operator, the Australian Racing Drivers’ Club, have enjoyed a tempestuous relationship with V8 Supercars over the last decade, with poor crowd numbers at the centre of some heated and rather public debates.
Previous claims from V8 Supercars that the venue is simply unable to pull a crowd are set to be tested this weekend. In addition to no longer competing with Oran Park for the Western Sydney market, the ARDC has made tickets so relatively cheap that it has described the pricing as “a one-off gesture” to fans. There can be little confusion as to the intent of that strategy.
The event’s two-day format means one should be careful drawing comparisons with the traditional three-day weekend figures, although a well trained glance around a circuit’s key spectator venues in the lead-up to race start can often reveal the truest picture anyway...
For those playing along at home this weekend, the 2008 event, held amid intensifying negotiations between V8 Supercars and the New South Wales government over the possibility of a Homebush street race, ended with a three-day official attendance of just 23,511.

Jonathon Webb may live on the Gold Coast these days, but it’s still hard to believe that the Castle Hill native has
not raced at his old local track, Sydney Motorsport Park, in over seven years.
One of 11 drivers in the field this weekend yet to race a V8 Supercar at the venue at all, Webb at least has the 2011 pre-season test day still relatively fresh in his mind.
Having visited the circuit on multiple occasions this year, including for its launch
in late May, Webb is perhaps best qualified of all the drivers to give his opinion on the upgrades that have taken place.
Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley spoke with him about the facility and his own expectations for the weekend ...
SPEEDCAFE: Jonathon, you were one of the first drivers to sample the newly-refurbished Sydney Motorsport Park circuit in May. The V8s aren’t using the extended track this weekend, but there are a lot of
other improvements around the place. What are your thoughts?
Jonathon WeBB: To be honest, they’ve done a really good job with the whole facility. It’s a monster project, and when I was there last weekend, they are still busily working away. There’s still plenty more to come too.
It’s obviously great that the V8 Supercars have returned there after the track had a freshen up. The garages are looking really

well presented. It’s probably the perfect time to head back there.
SPEEDCAFE: The track that the V8 Supercars will race on is the 3.9km ‘GP’ layout. The only changes to the layout since the last time the category was there is a slight modification to Turn 6/7. Can you tell us about those changes and how it will make your weekend different?
WeBB: If anything, it will make it a little easier in that section. They’ve taken out
what was a tricky right-hand kink going into left hander. That kink is now gone and there’s a traditional 90 degree corner.
For our cars, it will help look after the front tyres a bit better, and it will definitely add more speed to that section of track.
They’ve also resurfaced a whole heap of other sections that will improve the grip. I think the whole place will be a faster track to race on, compared to the past.
SPEEDCAFE: Will the change to Turn 6/7 improve passing opportunities at that section of the track?
WeBB: It probably will. If you get a good, clean run through Turns 4 and 5 and have a good run down to Turn 6 it’s definitely a passing opportunity. Before, it was a tough one to fit two cars through the kink. Now that the kink is gone, it’s going to be easier to pass there.

SPEEDCAFE: In some ways, it’s a shame that the V8s won’t be racing on the extended part of Sydney Motorsport Park. You’ve driven around the new section of track. Would you like to see the V8 Supercars race around the full 5.6km circuit?
WeBB: From my point of view, I’m a little disappointed that we’re not doing the full length. It’s the newest part of any track in the country, so it would have been nice to get there with our cars, but I can understand the reasoning for V8s being hesitant.
Hopefully we’ll go back this year, put on a good event and hopefully there’s a possibility of doing it for the future.
SPEEDCAFE: And what are your expectations for car #19 this weekend?
WeBB: For myself and the whole Tekno crew, we’re looking for a top 10. That’s really what we’re looking to achieve for the rest of the season.
It’s nice to go back to what is my home track. It’s been a few years since I raced there, but I have very fond memories of the place. The last time I raced there was probably Carrera Cup in 2005!
But I’m looking forward to it, and if we can come home with a couple of top 10 results, I’ll be more than happy.
SPEEDCAFE: There’s a few guys in the V8 field who have done lots of laps around Eastern Creek, but conversely there are few drivers who have recent ‘race’ laps there, including yourself ...
WeBB: That’s for sure. Even for the experienced guys, it has been five years since we’ve raced there. We also did the pre-season test in 2011, but even since then, the track has been resurfaced and the changes to 6/7 like we discussed. I think that will put more of us on a level playing field.

Circuit DescriptionA fast and flowing circuit very much in the mould of many European tracks, Sydney Motorsport Park requires a finely tuned race car that responds well to change of direction and deals well with constant radius corners. A former home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and A1 GP Series, the Western Sydney venue opened in 1990.

There have obviously been a lot of changes at Eastern Creek Raceway since the last time we were there - including the name.
In January last year we had compulsory pre-season test there, but in terms of racing it’s been four years since our last visit.
Back in 2008 Garth Tander was very quick there for the Holden Racing Team. Will Davison ended up winning the weekend under the old round winners format, and the two TeamVodafone cars were thereabouts as well.
Craig (Lowndes) topped the 2011 test with a 1:30.2s which was significantly faster than we’d seen there before, obviously aided by it being the first run around the place on the soft tyres. The track has changed a fair bit since then though, so it’ll be interesting to see what the lap times are like this weekend. I have not been there since the redevelopments, but looking at some of the things they have done around the circuit it’s a significantly different race track.
Even looking back at the notes from the test day, the grip levels in some of the corners had changed dramatically over 2008 because it had just been resurfaced at that stage. So there are a lot of unknown factors, but we can expect that its tradition of being reasonably kind on brakes but hard on tyres will continue. It’s been quite a bumpy circuit in the past too but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s improved or not.
Strategy
The format this weekend is biased towards the hard compound compared to what we’ve usually seen this year, particularly on Sunday. We’ve got four sets of hard tyres and just two sets of softs to play with over the weekend. You certainly won’t want to be making a big enough mistake in qualifying to damage one of your soft tyres.
I think on Saturday we’ll see what we usually do where most start on the hard and get it off as soon as they can. The fuel window is similar to the majority of events - they’ve made both races a little bit longer than normal at 140km and 220km to ensure that they are genuine one stop (Saturday) and two stop (Sunday) races. With three stints on Sunday the tyre strategy is a little more open, and people’s decisions on when to use the quicker rubber will no doubt be impacted by where they qualify.
In terms of fuel consumption, Eastern Creek is a bit like Phillip Island. Lots of long corners and part throttle always means your consumption per kilometre is down, which is often also what makes it hard on tyres.
Interestingly enough Eastern Creek is also quite hard on wheels. You often see cars lose speed because they’ve picked up a big vibration due to a wheel being buckled by the outside edge of the kerbing.

When that happens you’ve just got to soldier on until you’re in your pit window and can get onto another set. The new wheel prove more durable than what we were running back in 2008, but we’ll find out.
Passing
Passing has never been easy at Eastern Creek. Again, it’s a little like Phillip Island in that it really emphasises tyre quality, so that’s where the pitstop windows and those sorts of moves really make a difference.
Turn 8 - the hairpin behind the pits - was always a reasonably good place to make a move. Turn 2, providing you could get your car off of Turn 1 well enough, was a chance as well, but a good fight-back through Turn 3 and 4 means you can hold the other car back out again. So it’s like Phillip Island in that you can have a fair bit of side-by-side racing, but actually getting a move done often requires a fair bit of bravery.
We haven’t seen blue flags working particularly well recently either, which doesn’t help. That was really frustrating for us at Ipswich. It used to be the procedure that when we can see we’re catching a lapped car we’d notify race control, but now that we’re told not to do that it really relies on everyone doing their job properly. I doubt we’ll see quite as many cars getting lapped as what we did at
Ipswich, though - that’s a fairly unique circuit in that sense.
Pitlane
At Queensland Raceway we saw the extra timing line installed at pit entry work quite well in that we didn’t see anyone taking huge chunks of time out of the car in front at the pit entry. At Eastern Creek the cars are doing 220km/h as they approach the pit entry, so it’s always one of the more challenging entries for the drivers, and can catch out those not fully concentrating.
There was some weirdness going on in pitlane at Ipswich where we saw a lot of cars stall trying to leave their pit boxes during the races. That left a lot of people scratching their heads wondering why. It may have been related to the fuel, or it could have been circuit specific, but to see eight or nine cars stall, including both of ours, was a bit unusual. That could be something to watch for as well.
Overall, the thing I’m really surprised about is the fact that we’re going back to Eastern Creek but not using the new circuit. Personally I’d like to have seen us run the new loop that they’ve spent all the time and effort on. It’s always a good challenge for everyone to meet a new bit of race track for the first time, but that’s the way it goes.

Championship regulations ahead of next year’s introduction of Car of the Future.Moffat will debut an unraced Triple Eight-built FG Falcon chassis (888-021) that Dick Johnson Racing have had in its workshop for the past three and a half years.It replaces Moffat’s car of the last 18 months, which is the same Falcon taken to victory in the 2010 championship by James Courtney. The team will retain and restore that car.The now Holden Racing Team-mounted Courtney and Lucky 7 Racing’s Tim Slade have also debuted new cars during the 2012 season.

over time to have dominated the race winners’ list at Sydney Motorsport Park, Craig Lowndes’ record is impressive too.With five race wins at ‘The Creek’ - including Triple Eight’s first-ever V8 Supercar race win in 2005 - Lowndes is fourth on the all-time race win list at the circuit.But it’s his record since his sparkling championship debut at the venue in 1996 that really stands out.In the 29 races he’s started there since that glorious debut with the Holden Racing Team, Lowndes has racked up 26 top-10 race results and of those, 21 in the top-five!Lowdnes’ current TeamVodafone team-mate Jamie Whincup, meanwhile has yet to record a pole or race win in five event and 11 race starts at the venue.

the BaGman’S SaY...Walkinshaw Racing’s form was as curious as ever last-time out
at Queensland Raceway. Traditional team flag bearer Garth Tander endured his worst weekend of the season - failing to see the top 10 in either qualifying session or race and suffering the indignity of being lapped on Sunday - while Russell Ingall starred. Despite Tander’s qualifying average having now blown out to 10.2, it remains the seventh best in the field, emphasising how mixed the form has been behind the first couple of grid rows this season.
The fact that the WR VEs were quick at EC in 2007 and 2008 may or may not give an indication as to their performance this week, leaving the squad’s form as hard as ever to predict.

the BaGman’S SaY...In comparison to its 2011 efforts, all three SBR Falcons were
disappointingly off the pace at Queensland Raceway. Shane van Gisbergen and Tim Slade managed to snag a pair of top 10 race results, but the pair were over 30 seconds down on winner Craig Lowndes at the conclusion of 200km on Sunday.
The team will join the likes of WR and BJR, which both edged it for pace at QR, in hoping that the different tyre format can help break the now 20 race Triple Eight/FPR race winning streak. Saving the soft tyres for the final stint propelled Van Gisbergen to the team’s most recent win at Hidden Valley 12 months ago, and may prove their only realistic shot at toppling the giants this weekend.

the BaGman’S SaY...Amid the hype of Craig Lowndes’ form at Queensland Raceway, it
was easy to downplay just how hard Mark Winterbottom was able to push the TeamVodafone pilot. The FPR entries locked out the front-row of the grid for the sixth time in eight races on Sunday, with Winterbottom finishing less than two seconds behind Lowndes in second place on both days. For what had been described as the team’s ‘bogey circuit’, it was a big achievement.

the BaGman’S SaY...Kelly Racing’s dismal on-track performances show no signs of
picking up before season’s end, with all four cars against struggling last time out at Queensland Raceway.
Adding insult to the squad’s lack of car speed was the need to pit Rick Kelly for a third time in the dying stages of Sunday’s race as his pit strategy saw the #15 Holden run low on fuel. The once top 10 certainty now sits a lowly 16th in the points standings.
Jacques Villeneuve, meanwhile, returns for a third weekend in the team’s Pepsi entry. The Canadian failed to truly move off the bottom of the pile at Queensland Raceway, and will be desperate to at least prove competitive with the tail end runners prior to Greg Murphy’s return.

saw BJR shuffle its driver/engineer combinations prior to Hamilton appear to have developed into a chasm over recent events as the team’s cars consistently figure in different parts of the field.
Fabian Coulthard’s efforts at Queensland Raceway ensure that the #14 car has scored four top five finishes in the past five races in what is arguably the strongest spell for any non-Triple Eight or FPR car all season.
Jason Bright meanwhile, hasn’t put a single-digit result on the board since his podium in Race 11 at Phillip Island - a weekend that in-turn proved disastrous for Coulthard. SMP’s Phillip Island-style sweeps will therefore mark an interesting test for the two sides of the BJR garage this weekend.

Eastern Creek form of 2008, but the team will head to the Sydney venue buoyed by flickers of form over the last two events.
Although unable to replicate Steve Owen’s season-best Townsville performance, Queensland Raceway saw Owen, Steven Johnson and Dean Fiore all contend for top 10 finishes. It was unarguably Fiore’s most positive weekend since joining the squad at the beginning of the year - car #12 qualifying in the top dozen for both races.
Getting all four of its cars inside the top 20 continues to be an achievement for this team however.

the BaGman’S SaY...Jonathon Webb will be looking to bounce back from a disastrous run
at Queensland Raceway that was dogged by mechanical failures. The #19 Commodore qualified in the top six for the first time in 10 races on Sunday at Ipswich but eventually retired with gearbox problems - a day after engine issues forced him out of Race 16.
Webb is one of several drivers with little V8 Supercars experience at SMP due to its recent absence from the calendar, but has more knowledge of the recent circuit alterations having helped to launch the developments in late May.
Top 10 results are not out of the question for either Tekno entry this weekend, especially considering their strong form at the similarly flowing Phillip Island earlier in the year.

rebounding from a poor run in Townsville to record top 10 results in both races. Encouragingly, Caruso had also qualified in the top 10 on both occasions - bringing the team’s number of top 10 starts for the season to four. Caruso’s speed was reflected in Alex Premat’s one-lap pace too, with the Frenchman starting both races on a weekend inside the top 20 for the first time in his short career.
Premat is likely to enjoy the European-style Eastern Creek layout more than the circuits such as Ipswich, but having not seen a top 15 finish since Symmons Plains, expectations should be kept low.

The Hiflex Falcon has recorded an average starting position of 9.5 over the Townsville and Queensland Raceway events - bested only by the Triple Eight/FPR quintet and the continually impressive Fabian Coulthard.
While the races have gone a little less swimmingly, expect this outfit to be punching solidly in the midfield at a minimum.
the BaGman’S SaY...Although Tekno Autosports’ Triple Eight customer cars continue
to show flashes of speed, Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport’s switch to the Queensland-developed machinery this season has left it scarcely further up the grid than in previous seasons.
Having proven unable to put a dint in the top 20 last time out at Queensland Raceway, this entry will be one of several that could be forgiven for taking an unconventional strategy in Sunday’s race in a bid to vault into the top 10 for the first time all season.
