Kevin Gadzalinski (Leaf Coneybear) Kevin is a Milwaukee native and resident who has been studying acting, voice, musical theatre, and theatre education for the past several years. This is Kevin’s 2nd production at WCT, having first appeared last spring in Miss Saigon. Earlier this year he appeared in Brumder Mansion’s Speakeasy of Murder, as well as the Hustler/Ben in Six Degrees of Separation at Sunset Playhouse. Having the opportunity to play Leaf is practically a dream come true and he couldn’t be more excited!
Paula Garcia (Rona Lisa Perretti) Paula is E-C-S-T-A-T-I-C to be back at WCT, last appearing in 42nd Street, Candy Cane Tales, I Love You You’re Perfect, and Sylvia. She is in her 15th season with the Milwaukee Choral Artists, a professional women’s vocal ensemble. She has performed with many area community and professional theaters, including The Skylight Music Theatre where she will appear in The Sound of Music later this fall. C-O-P-I-O-U-S thanks to Tom.

Over the years she has performed in educational institutions from the university to the elementary level, with professional theater and choral groups, and in recital programs. Loves playing/directing musical theater at all levels - middle school, high school and community theater - recently doing RENT in Oconomowoc. And, of course, when Donna Kummer asks - the answer is always YES - dating back to Modjeska shows, Sunset shows, and “Little Shop” at Marquette University last Fall. BEEing with Donna and her “pits” is the ultimate musical experience!
Patrick Hopkins (Percussion) Patrick is a freelance drummer who has been playing professionally since 2001. He enjoys many styles of music but jazz is his passion. His major influence is Buddy Rich and emulates his style as much as possible. Besides having a degree in Business, Patrick is a busy Milwaukee musician. Along with the various bands he plays with, Patrick has been adding his drum kit flare for over 60 musical productions. He has played with Modjeska Youth Theater, Sunset Playhouse, Shorewood High School, Carroll College, Concordia University, and Off The Wall Theatre, among many others. Patrick currently works at a local law firm as a researcher.
Donna Kummer (Music Director/Orchestra Director) Donna has been involved in 150 productions over the past 20 years, including four previous productions at Waukesha Civic: Fantasticks, Into the Woods, Fiddler on the Roof, and Broadway Romance. She provided musical direction at Modjeska Youth Theatre for nine years and works with numerous professional, community, and school theatres. She has also worked with Skylight Opera Theatre as a Teaching Artist in area schools. Donna serves as the Director of Music for Plymouth UCC

Max would personally like to thank the cast and crew of this show, most importantly Tom for another amazing experience he will never forget. He would also like to thank his loving
family and friends especially Laura Guiffre for supporting him through everything! “This one is for you!”
Gabbie Levine (Olive Ostrovsky) Gabbie is honored to be making her Waukesha Civic debut. She was most recently seen in Theatre on Main’s RENT. the Riverside Radio Network Orchestra, and Jerry Lee Lewis, to name a few. He spent 20 years teaching saxophone and jazz studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Glen currently leads the Milwaukee Jazz All Stars and performs on both sides of the proscenium as a musician and as an actor. Recent reviews of his acting have included comments such as “It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion” and “He has a great face for radio.” So, you may consider yourselves lucky to hear him on woodwinds tonight!
Corey Richards (Mitch Mahoney) This is Corey’s ninth show here at Civic. He first appeared as Dickon in The Secret Garden. Then was Snoopy in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. A few years later he was in Miracle on 34th Street as Dr. Sawyer. After that he played Billy in 42nd Street and then Horton in Seussical The Musical. He appeared in Bye Bye Birdie and The Importance of Being Earnest. Last year he stared in Smoke on the Mountain as Rev. Ogelthorp and in Nuncrackers as Sister Mary Hubert. He has also
stared in roles such as Joseph from Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat, Chuck in Footloose, he also stared in Into the Woods as Cinderella’s Prince, George in Our Town, Stanley in Hello Dolly. He is so excited to be in this show, and finds it ironic because anyone that knows him, knows that he is a horrible speller.
Aaron J. Schmidt (Lighting and Sound Designer) Aaron is happy to be back at WCT after designing sound for Busybody and lights and sound for Miss Saigon. Other recent design credits include Joseph… for Brookfield Central High School, and Sweet Charity, Prelude to a Kiss, and The Drowsy Chaperone at Sunset Playhouse. DIRECTOR ’S NOTES
What is a word? [wurd] noun 1. something that is said. a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning. What is adolescence? [ad-l-es=uh ns] noun 1. the transitional period between puberty and adulthood in human development.
As an educator I have an appreciation, love, and homage for children getting through the challenges of age. Children are constantly searching for acceptance among their peers. They want to be heard when they speak, to feel intelligent, to be taken seriously, especially by the adults in their lives. They are looking to make everyone happy. I have come to believe the authors wrote Spelling Bee as a kind of metaphor for the Human Experience -- sometimes you get the easy words and sometimes you don’t. “Life is random and unfair! Life is Pandemonium!”
Spelling Bee, through its chaos, humor, and song takes us back to those awkward elementary and middle school years. This is the long journey of self discovery and finding out who we truly are. The time we learn that “it’s OK to be different.” As you watch the kids in this show try to find answers to life’s mysteries in a book where every word can be found and defined and spelled, ask yourself “can one really define oneself and find their place in words?” I believe it must be found ....... in life! Watch the show! You may even see yourself!

around the Milwaukee area. Some of AJ’s most recent WCT set design credits include Miss Saigon, The Tavern, Candy Cane Tales and Holiday Carols, Two by Two, and State Fair. A.J. enjoys spending with his wife, actress Kelly Simon, and their 14-month-old little girl.
Sharon Sohner (Costume Assistant) Sharon is honored and excited to be working with Thomas Weissgerber and the incredibly talented, wonderful cast and crew on this challenging production. Other WCT costuming projects have been: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, The Dining Room, and 110 in the Shade. Special thanks to the WCT Costume Divas: Aleta, Ellen, Lee, and Sallie for their generous help and willing natures.
Shawn Spellman (Properties Assistant/DressingAssistant) Shawn has been involved with WCT for eight years and loves every aspect of it. She is glad to be helping out a friend in need during the run of Spelling Bee.
Thomas Weissgerber (Director/Choreographer/Costume Designer) Thomas was born and raised in Chicago, holds a degree in Musical Theatre, and is currently working on getting his certification in Theatre Education. He came to Milwaukee in 1997 and served as the Artist in Residence at the Milwaukee Jewish Day School. Currently he is The Head of Theatre at Whitnall High School where he truly enjoys sharing his knowledge and Theatre Education. Thomas has also worked as the Theatre Manager at the Jewish Community Center of Milwaukee. And for 10+ years he has been with First Stage Childrens Theatre. Most recently he directed the musical RENT at Theatre On Main and last year Cabaret. Thomas is excited to be directing here at Waukesha Civic Theatre and hopes to be back again.

CIVIC BROADWAY SINGERS Are you looking for upbeat entertainment for your next special event? The Civic Broadway Singers perform year-round in southeast-ern Wisconsin under the musical direc-tion of Abby Lorenz. The 30-voice group sings memorable Broadway favorites for a variety of events, from company picnics and Christmas parties to corpo-rate lunches and grand openings. The Civic Broadway Singers provide their own piano and sound system and will perform for groups of all sizes in exchange for a donation to the theatre. For scheduling the Civic Broadway Singers at your next event, please call Abby at (414) 350-8713 or e-mail her at [email protected].
CIVIC SENIOR PLAYERS The Civic Senior Players – Traveling to make you laugh! We are a fun-loving group of performers who love to entertain others. We’ll bring our unique comedy-variety show to your senior organization, community group, or any event looking for a laugh, in exchange for a donation to the Waukesha Civic The-atre. To schedule an event, or if you have an interest in becoming a performer, please call Carol at (262) 549-1091 or e-mail her at [email protected].
ACAP PLAYMAKERS provide daytime performances (often of original works) based upon school curricula, themes, and
ideas relevant to children at various stages of their education. The fall PlayMakers production is geared to our elementary students, and the spring production is produced for middle school students. While offered primarily to school groups, these family-friendly shows are great for public, private, and home school groups, Boy and Girl Scout troops, senior centers, and your family! Please call (262) 547-0708 for ticket prices and information. PlayMak-ers rehearse and perform in the daytime, and are always looking for new actors and technical personnel.
ACCESSIBILITY The Margaret Brate Bryant Civic Theatre Building is fully handicapped-accessible, and WCT is proud to offer a number of services for our patrons who have special needs (a four-week notice is required and services are based upon availability). For the hearing impaired we have a T-Coil Loop System, T-Coil Listening Devices, and FM listening devices that will amplify the sounds of the performance.
Patrons must have hearing aids with telecoils installed and activated to use the Loop System. Patrons who are blind can receive audio descriptive services for the performance. Wheelchair accessibility is available in two forms: transfer seats and wheelchair positions.
PATRONS Please refrain from wearing highly-scented colognes, perfumes, hand cream, or aftershave to performances, as many people have allergies or respiratory problems. WCT is concerned for all patrons and we appreciate your cooperation.
PARKING Parking is available on Main Street, in the Riverfront Plaza parking area behind the Theatre, off Barstow Street, in the parking facility on Broadway, and at other locations in downtown Waukesha.
REMINDER As a courtesy to those who arrive on time, Latecomers will be seated at First Break!
