Letter from the President

Dear Members of the Spertus Family:

One of the great joys of my presidency is getting to know our students. With consistency, these are some of the most interesting and impressive individuals I have ever met. Spertus graduate students come from 26 U.S. states and 9 foreign countries. Many already have advanced degrees in fields ranging from engineering to law, from medicine to business administration, before they ever apply to Spertus. Yet even with such impressive backgrounds, they embark upon a rigorous course of study in pursuit of a graduate degree in Jewish Studies, Jewish Professional Studies, or Nonprofit Management. Many of our students are not Jewish, but appreciate the academic opportunities afforded them in a Spertus degree program. Within several years of receiving their diplomas, graduates repeatedly point to their studies at Spertus as among the top reasons for promotions and career advancement.

The decision to pursue a Masters or a Doctorate at Spertus is not the same as entering graduate school right out of college. Most of our students are already working full time, often in demanding positions. In addition to professional obligations, many have family commitments as well. After challenging days at work, when they would surely like to enjoy their time at home, our students tackle complex readings, papers, and class projects.

Despite the demands, post-collegiate adult learners continue to come to Spertus for their graduate education. Some because they appreciate the non-denominational approach to Jewish Studies, which has always been central to our mission. Others treasure Spertus for our signature blend of theory and practice, our commitment to marrying the lofty towers of academe with the pragmatics of daily life. Still others turn to Spertus because our innovative use of technology and creative approach to coursework responds, with agility, to the needs of busy 21st-century adults.

Among its many names, the festival of Pesach is known in Hebrew as chag he-avi—the spring holiday. The spring, of course, is the season of rebirth and renewal. Arguably, it is the perfect time to consider going back to school, a time to rejuvenate (or should I say re-Jew-venate) the mind and the soul. If you have always thought about a return to graduate studies, delay no further. Visit our website—spertus.edu—for a full listing of Spertus degree programs. Make an appointment to speak with our academic department in person or on the phone. Discover what Spertus students have known for more than 85 years—a Spertus degree is an unparalleled and transformative experience—for you, for your family, and for your community.

And if this is not the time for you to consider a graduate degree, Spertus still has many things to challenge and excite you. Sign up for a conference on the State of American Jewish Belief (p7). See the newest chapter of our evolving exhibit on Chicago Jewish history (p19). Or hear music written in Theresienstadt brought to life (p13). In this season of renewal, Spertus, the Center for Jewish Learning and Culture, has something fresh and vital for you.

Warm wishes for a meaningful Passover holiday.

Dr. Hal M. Lewis is President and CEO of Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies

Women UnchainedSpertus presents the Chicago premiere of an important new film that documents the experiences of modern-day agunot, women whose husbands refuse to grant them a Jewish divorce. The film includes interviews with leading women’s advocates, rabbis, and experts. It explores women’s rights in Judaism and details of “get-o-nomics,” outlandish extortion schemes levied against some women.

A post-screening panel—led by Emily Soloff of the American Jewish Committee—will include Emmy-award-winning director Beverly Siegel, Rabbi Gedalia Dov Schwartz, head of the rabbinical court of the Beth Din of America, and international women’s rights lawyer Sharon Shenhav. The film is produced by Beverly Siegel and Leta Lenik.

Music and MemoryThe Piano Sonatas of Viktor UllmannViktor Ullmann (1898-1944) was a leading composer of his generation. Stirred by Goethe’s maxim, “live within the moment, live in eternity,” his music is autobiographical, accessible, and pays homage to the past by quoting music from Mozart to Yiddish folksongs, from operetta to Bach.

In September 1942, Ullman was deported by the Nazis to Theresienstadt, where he continued to compose. In October 1944, he was transported to Aushwitz and murdered in the gas chambers.

In commemoration of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Spertus welcomes Jeanne Golan to celebrate Viktor Ullman’s life and work.

Jeanne Golan is a pianist and award-winning professor of music who has performed extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. She recently spent her sabbatical year recording the complete piano sonatas of Viktor Ullmann, pieces that span his days as a prominent musical figure in Prague to his internment at Theresienstadt.

$18 | $10 for Spertus members | $8 for students Buy tickets online at spertus.edu or call 312.322.1773.

Etgar KeretA Conversation and ReadingTakes place at Chicago Sinai Congregation 15 West Delaware Place, Chicago

Equal parts Franz Kafka and Kurt Vonnegut, and suffused with inimitable and absurdist hilarity, Israeli writer Etgar Keret is a singular voice in contemporary literature. His masterful short stories, at once dark and delightfully comedic, capture human experience in all of its inspiring beauty and perplexing shortcomings. As readers, we are bewitched by the strange and surreal worlds he creates. Keret visits Chicago to celebrate the English translation of his sixth bestselling collection, Suddenly, a Knock on the Door. Novelist Nathan Englander, translator of the collection, joins Keret in conversation.

Spertus is pleased to co-sponsor this program in partnership with the Chicago Humanities Festival, Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Chicago, the Writing Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Jewish Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and The Crown Family Center for Jewish Studies, Northwestern University.

The Jewish Origins of Cultural PluralismHear historian Dr. Daniel Greene speak about his new book, The Jewish Origins of Cultural Pluralism, in which he traces the emergence of cultural pluralism to a group of Jewish college students and intellectuals. In 1906, they founded the Menorah Association at Harvard. Its publication, Menorah Journal, became a leading voice of Jewish public opinion in the 1920s. In response to the idea that the American melting pot would erase cultural differences, they instead advocated a pluralist America that would accommodate a thriving Jewish culture and bring Jewishness into mainstream American life.

Dr. Daniel Greene is Vice President for Research and Academic Programs at Chicago’s Newberry Library. He has served as a historian at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. He earned his PhD in History from the University of Chicago.

Uncovered & Rediscovered Stories of Jewish Chicago Uncovered & Rediscovered is an exhibit series that explores the Chicago Jewish experience. Through 2012, the exhibit unfolds in a series of intimate chapters (each on display for several months on the ground floor of the Spertus building). Using materials from Spertus’ rich and varied holdings, this project tells the tales of Chicago’s Jewish pioneers and politicians, artists and anarchists, authors and entrepreneurs, and even Jewish boxers.

Open Sunday-Thursday, 10 am – 5 pm (Spertus is closed Fridays & Saturdays.)Admission to the exhibit—including a multi-media screening station—is free.

Chapter Five Movers, Shakers, and History-MakersThrough May 10

This chapter focuses on Chicago Jews who have played leading roles in public life. Materials document Jewish contributions to business, entertainment, philanthropy, politics, and sports. Highlights include the landmark labor contract that ended the 1910 Garment Workers’ Strike, a program from the Jewish pageant at the 1933 World’s Fair, the philanthropic ledger of Max Adler, founder of the Adler Planetarium, and an Emmy Award from Irv Kupcinet’s television show.

Chapter Six A Jewish HomelandJune 3–October 4

This chapter documents the efforts of Chicagoans to secure a homeland for the Jewish people, beginning with the founding of this country’s first

zionist organization on Chicago’s Near West Side in 1896. Learn of little-known episodes such as Methodist Minister William Blackstone’s petition to Presidents Harrison and Wilson to establish a Jewish state in Palestine, or the failed efforts of a prominent group of Chicagoans to create a Jewish homeland in Siberia.

The segment also explores local responses to the unfolding horror of Nazism—including a boycott of German goods and frantic efforts to rescue European family members—as well as a joyful rally of 25,000 at the Chicago Stadium celebrating the founding of the State of Israel.

Exhibits at Spertus are supported, in part, by a CityArts Program 4 Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the Harry and Sadie Lasky Foundation.Th

Hassidic CourtsPhotographs from Israel by Gil Cohen-MagenMarch 1–May 30

As an Israeli photographer for the Reuters news agency, Gil Cohen-Magen was assigned to take pictures of Jewish customs in the ultra-Orthodox community of Mea She’arim. This experience grew into a decade-long project, during which Cohen-Magen built personal bonds within some of Israel’s most cloistered Hassidic communities and gained access to rituals, celebrations, and scenes of everyday life. A series of these photographs will be on view at Spertus.

Asher Library Receives Gift of Chicago Jewish ChronicleIrving and Marilyn L. Naiditch of Highland Park recently donated volumes of the Chicago Jewish Chronicle newspaper to the Asher Library. The Naiditches discovered the bound volumes, which cover 1928 to 1941 and are in pristine condition, during their purchase of a warehouse in 1982.

Mrs. Naiditch recounts “we were absolutely thrilled to find this wonderful collection of Chicago Jewish Chronicle…I have always had a sincere interest in Chicago history,” says Mrs. Naiditch. “I remember the stories of my mother, who went to the Hull House on Halsted Street and related many stories of that era, including wooden sidewalks and horse and buggies. Each volume (of the Chonicle) is filled with wonderful and long-forgotten stories of those who shaped Chicago and the Chicago Jewish community.”

The Chicago Jewish Chronicle was founded in 1918 by Hyman Meites, known for his History of the Jews of Chicago. It was published until 1949. The volumes are an important addition to the Asher Library resources on Chicago Jewish history.

Several Chronicle volumes are on display in the library. Additional volumes are available for viewing by appointment. Contact [email protected] to reserve a time.

Asher Library Hours Sunday 12 – 4 pm Monday – Thursday 4 – 6:30 pm Spertus is closed to the public Fridays and Saturdays.

To search the Asher Library catalog, visit spertus.edu. Spertus membership includes Asher Library borrowing privileges, interlibrary loan, and reference assistance —even if you live out of town.

Spertus Student Creates Sweet Buzz in Washington, DCBrenda Palms-Barber is a student in the Spertus Masters of Science in Nonprofit Management program. Her work is making ripples around the country as an example of green job creation for those in need of a new start.

Sweet Beginnings is an innovative jobs program run by the North Lawndale Employment Network (NLEN), where Brenda serves as executive director. The program offers transitional jobs for formerly incarcerated individuals and others with significant barriers to employment. It does this through the production and sales of products—sold under the name Beeline—made with all-natural honey from its urban apiary in North Lawndale.

Brenda was recently asked to speak before the bi-partisan committee on Social Innovation and Philanthropy chaired by Senator Joe Lieberman and Representative Eric Cantor, in Washington DC. She spoke about how Sweet Beginnings workers care for bees and hives, harvest honey, produce and package products, fill orders, track inventory, and sell at retail outlets and special events. The recidivism rate for former Sweet Beginnings employees is below 4%, compared to an average of 55% in Illinois and 65% nationally.

First Canadian Cohort Graduates from Spertus Jewish Professional Studies ProgramOn Sunday, December 11, 2011, Spertus—in a unique partnership with the Jewish Federations of Canada-UIA—proudly awarded its Master of Arts in Jewish Professional Studies (MAJPS) degree to 15 graduates of the program’s first Canadian cohort.

At the ceremony—which took place in Montreal—a Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa was awarded to philanthropist and Canadian community leader Barbara Bank, who serves as a mentor in the program. Sarah Atkins, of the Bronfman Israel Experience Centre and March of the Living, spoke on behalf of her fellow graduates, and Spertus President and CEO Dr. Hal M. Lewis gave the keynote address.

The MAJPS program provides important grounding in classical and contemporary Jewish knowledge, combined with much-needed nonprofit management professional training. The program draws students from a broad range of areas, creating a dynamic environment for professionals to learn from one another. A second Canadian cohort is already underway.

A new Chicago cohort starts this fall. For more information about the program, visit spertus.edu/majps
