La Spezia owed its development to the construction of the Naval Arsenal (1860-1865), which was the idea of Cavour and constructed according to a plan by Domenico Chiodo. The Public Gardens, which were created in the early nineteenth century on the crest of the Napoleonic dream (and, it was said at the time, in competition with those in Tokyo), are the true feathers in the city’s cap. Originally known as the “Bo schetto”, these enchanted gardens refl ect the multifarious charms of nature throughout the seasons. The bandstand inside the gardens is a veritable jewel of Art Nouveau style. There is a lush garden park with its rare decorative plants and fl ower-beds opposite the promenade which offers a spectacular view across the Gulf that is crowned by the sight of the Apuan Alps and the hills sweeping gracefully down to the sea. you an idea of the various activities that are carried out in the Gulf. L’Alta Via del Golfo con-nects Porto Venere, La Spezia, Vezzano Ligure, Arcola, Lerici and Ameglia. This extraordinary itinerary permits climbing up to different elevations and visiting small ancient villages they immerses in a charming landscape such as Biassa and Campiglia that dominate the Gulf and the Cinque Terre and offers the occasion to visit the church in Marinasco that towers over the city and Pitelli on the ridge which divides the Gulf and the Magra Valley. The city appraised for its mild climate and position, offers visits all year round and thanks to excel-lent local cuisine: mes-ciua (various cooked beans), herb pies, frittelle di baccalà (cod fi sh fritters) and stuffed mussels to exquisite IGT Gulf of Poets wines. and modern art to the City of La Spezia. Saint George’s Castle, The “Ubaldo Formentini” archaeological collections; conserves the famous stele statutes, a vast collection of mate-rial from the Luni area during the Roman era (mosaics, epigraphy and archeological fi nds of Christianity in Luni). Diocesan Museum is in the ancient Oratory of Saint Bernardino; exposes a wealth of artwork, sacred furnishings, liturgical vestments and objects in silver and ivory from the Dioceses of La Spezia. The Ethnographic Museum Giovanni Podenzana is in the same place; it contains a catalogue of everyday objects and tools traditionally used locally and in the rural areas. Palazzina delle Arti and the Seal Museum; the collection of offi cial seals was donated to La Spezia by the Capellini family and is the largest collection of its kind in the world. It also lodges a library with thematic catalogue on art and archae-ology, laboratories for didactics and space for exhibits. The Museum of Naval Technology is situated in the Naval Arsenal. It is one of the most prestigious in the world, offering an important collection of fi gureheads, glorious exhibits from naval history and models showing the evolution of shipping. necessary) where leading industrial archaeology can be seen regarding various naval activities. National Transport Museum created to collect and conserve in perfect working order the equipment and means of public transportation, (trolleybuses, railway), of historic interest. It is also pro-vided with a special sector library, (documents relative to transport history and photos display). CAMEC, Modern and Contemporary Art Museum houses the Battolini and Coz-zani works of art and those of the “Premio del Golfo”. The museum organizes international contemporary art exhibi-tions. All travelers and tourists are surrounded by the city’s harmonious Art Nouveau architecture, which became pop-ular in the wake of the Art-Industry movement in the early twentieth century. to the city. La Spezia has not forgotten its ancient traditions, events and rites of yore that live on in collective consciousness today. March 19 is the feast of Saint Joseph’s (Italy’s Father’s Day). This popular fair brings the city to life with a maze of six hundred stalls all around the gardens and along the Gulf’s promenade. Another appointment is the “Palio del Golfo”, a historic regatta that excites the city and nearby small villages the fi rst Sunday of August. It is preceded (check calendar) by a parade of costumes created by each village or township on different themes each year. The event ends with fi rework displays on the Gulf. The Biennial Exhibition is in June, “Maina” Feast of the Marine. Biennial art, culture, and traditions of the sea a celebration full of events, exhibitions, seminars, concerts, shows and meetings on sea themes. “Liguria da bere” (end of June) occupies the historic center of the city with stands displaying Liguria Wines DOC and IGT together with products typi-cally selected from local areas; calendar full of visits to wine cellars and vineyards, theme encounters with expert journalists on sector and local producers, guided wine tasting, all of which permit to take part and appreciate the excellence of scents and savories of the food-and-wine connoisseurship of Liguria.

The fi rst village you come to as you travel westward is Fezzano with its Church Saint John the Baptist, small harbor on the Gulf and the remains of the beautiful Villa Simonetta Cattaneo, aesthetics of Botticelli’s celebrated painting “La nascita di Venere”. Then there is the delicious natural inlet of Le Grazie and its archeological site of “Villa Romana del Varignano”. The Convent of the Olivetani, decorated with fi fteenth-century frescoes by Nicolò Corso, signifi cant declaration of cultural activities of the religious order, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Le Grazie (late-gothic style). age Site. This small village has maintained its medieval structure and coastal charm; Doria Castle a Genoese military outpost and the Church of Saint Lawrence (consecrated in 1130) has remarkable works of art (a marble altar-piece attributed to Mino da Fiesole, a triptych from the XV century over the main altar the sacred image of the Madonna Bianca which is ceremoniously celebrated on 17 August with an evening procession through the alleyways with lit candles marking path). The vestry of the church contained a magnifi cent treasure that is now a part of the Diocesan Museum in La Spezia. The Church of Saint Peter is at the extreme end of the promontory on a vertical part of the cliff above the sea (built in 1277 on a persistent structure VI century). Palmaria is opposite Porto Venere, which is easily reached by ferry or smaller boats. Its landscape is of great wealth and value, with ideal path excursions for walking in the green. Within the splendid Regional Natural Park there is Tino; covered with myrtle, Holm-oak and strawberry trees; the ruins of the Monastery of Saint Venerio, the hermit monk who lived on the island is celebrated on 13 September. He is the patron saint of all lighthouses in Italy. Visits to the island is possible during celebration, now a military garrison. Not far from Tino is Tinetto, where there are ruins of a fi fth-century monastery.

Tourism facilities in Porto Venere are excellent and the bathing and docking establishments are well equipped. The entire Gulf offers outdoor activities accessibility. Admirably famous for typical local food (shell-fi sh and various types of fi sh) served in all restaurants. The sea-scape of the Gulf is characterized by the presence of breeding grounds for mussels the pro-tagonist of local cuisine. The eastern side of the Gulf is just as interesting, once outside the city there is the Scoglietti Tunnel, then suddenly the view is on the Bay of Lerici. Crossing San Terenzo, distinguished to have had Mary e Percy Shelley at Villa Magni in front of the sea, Genoese Castle, tempo-rary center of exhibits, parish church decorated in late baroque which contains a painting by Fiasella, the magnifi cent Villa Marigola where many important people lodged (Sam Benelli who composed “Cena delle Beffe”). The villa, today, is a congress center and cultural activity center overlooking a most beautiful “Italian garden” constructed to schemes. The seacoast course also viable on foot and then there is Lerici with its Genoese castle (XIII-XVI century), an extension of a pre-existent mediaeval castle. Remarkable interior, gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Anastasia (1250). The Castle is an important center for cultural activities, and houses

the Geopaleontologico Museum, created from the discovery of prehistoric remains in the area (footprints dating back 220 million of years ago). The museum has a virtual-real-ity section, which offers scientifi cally guided tours through fantastic worlds reconstruct-ing that ambience and prehistoric animals. It also has a collection of fossils. The Oratory of Saint Rocco which exposes a famous paint-ing of Fiasella, and the church tower which antiquely was a lookout post, decorated with fourteenth-century tablets; Church of San Francesco, reconstructed in 1632, conserves a wealth of art work: two canvasses by Fiasella, marble triptych by Domenico Gare (1529) and

the “The Corspe of Christ” by Maragliano. The pleasant temperatures make staying in Lerici a year round pleasure. The lush green area on the seacoast designs the path to Fiascherino where D. H. Lawrence stayed. The architectonic structure of Tellaro is particularly inviting and the green area covers the entire eastern seashore of the Gulf to Bocca di Magra. The area above Lerici, Barcola with its beautiful Villa Picedi -De Benedetti and Pugliola with Villa Cochrane and its park of Holm-oak, pine, eucalyptus and cypress, only to continue on to La Serra with magnifi cent panoramic views of the Gulf. The path goes deeper and deeper within the Montemarcello Magra Regional Park, a protected area which connects the sea ambience with the river landscape, the coast and the inland villages (18) of the Province; surrounded by panoramic views and rare beauty one ascends to Montemarcello, one of the most picturesque villages in Italy. One of Italy’s 15 dream beaches is Punta Corvo not far away following village path or by ferry from Bocca di Magra and from Fiumaretta (Ameglia). Vernazza and its Genoese Romanesque style church, Church of Saint Margaret of Antiochia which follows the outline of the inlet, while the cylinder tower castle dominates the village. Monterosso al Mare with its wide sandy shore has many points of interest: a medieval “Torre Aurora” (Tower Aurora) which sepa-rates the old part from the new part of the village (Fegina) where there is the grand statue of “Gigante” (the Giant); not far there is the private house of Eugenio Montale, Nobel Prize for Literature (1975). The historic center with its maze of alleyways called “caruggi”, the Church of Saint John the Baptist and its façade with shades of yellow and its bell tower which was a lookout post in the past. The Capuchin Convent con-serves “The Crucifi xion” by Van Dyck; up above the village there is the Sanctuary of Soviore, ancient cultural locality for pilgrimages, and permits to sweep the horizon all around.The ridge tops of the Cinque Terre hills have a network of paths which connect the Sanctuaries in natural surroundings and contours above the villages and the sea. Nature has created the cliffs and rugged terrain, but the vineyards were created by man together with the dry wall system which carry the weight of the terrace farming and this breathtaking scenery is offered to everyone. Beyond Punta Mesco, there is Levanto, a small town with a very large welcome mat, green area and gardens. The Church of Saint Andrew, castle, medieval loggia, cultural material museum and the hillside dotted with small villages that overlook the wide beach – loved by surfers. Bonassola follows with its castle, church, Oratories and houses along the inlet that look onto the crystal clear water. Framura, between cliffs and small harbors, hamlets that dot the hillsides, remains a curiosity for all visitors to discover. Deiva Marina has ample sandy beaches and excellent tourist facilities and it is here were the Pro-vince of La Spezia ends. Cozy restaurants with typical local food, salted anchovies from Monterosso, “Gattafi n” at Levanto (fritters with wild herbs), seafood dishes and excellent extra virgin olive oil DOP, and wines DOC of the Cinque Terre with its fi ne wine “sciacchetrà” and DOC wines of Colli di Levanto are always there.

Leaving La Spezia, along the Via Aurelia, there is Riccò del Golfo with sandstone doorways, churches with char-acteristic depicted slate.The historic center of Pignone is easily reached here there are traces of its past, pilgrimages and commerce, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, sixteenth-century bridge, loggia, and not far there is the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Ponte. This village has conserved its vocation in high quality agriculture as beans, onions, potatoes, corn, salami and sausages - indications are inserted in the Regional Geography of products for excellence.Although the Sanctuary of Soviore at Monterosso and the Cinque Terre are very near, it is also inviting to continue into the valley toward Beverino, then Borghetto Vara and toward Pass of the Bracco to Carrodano and Mattarana. this place in 1789 of a peasant family, patron saint of the Vara Valley and a sol-emn feast is celebrated on 2 June. Nicolò Paganini’s house is in Carro, and in his honor “Il Festival Paganiniano” is held during the summer months, with concerts by artists of high esteem and performed in the small hamlets, churches, impor-tant buildings of the territory. The journey continues to Brugnato, built around the two-aisled Cathedral, and the Bishop’s palace is today the Diocesan Museum which contains an archaeological section and a collection of votary objects, fur-nishings, antique missals, and liturgical vestments.Rocchetta Vara isn’t very far and then up to Veppo and Suvero with an impor-tant Castle of Malaspina, an ensemble of incredible stately pine wood trees of the Apennines. The itinerary of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri passes and reaches the Pass of Casoni with a breathtaking and unforgettable view of the valley and Luni-giana. A number of itineraries of varied landscapes and historic villages lead to La Spezia in the Magra Valley, following the upward climb of Buonviaggio visitors encounter Valeri-ano and Vezzano Ligure, medieval villages, overlooking the Magra River. ancient medieval market place which maintains its commercial vocation through its tangled medieval streets with a summer program “La cucina d’Sa Steu” and a feast in August in the hamlet of Ponzano, in honor of “La scherpada” a typical dish (vegetable pie with cheese cooked on an open fi re with earthenware disks).The Via Francigena have many tracks but some arrive at Sarzana, with it churches, pal-aces and squares and two fortifi cations; Firmafede, today center of exhibitions and events, Sarzanello on high ground overlooks the valley. The Cathedral constitutes a veri-table artistic mosaic of architecture and contains priceless paintings by Fiasella, known as “Il Sarzana” (1600), two ambons by Riccomanno, a “San Gerolamo” by Andrea della Robbia and a “Crucifi xion” from the Lucca school by Mastro Guglielmo (1138) which is the oldest painting on wood in the world. Sarazana is a must with its numerous Ora-tories, one of which is also a Diocesan Museum which exposes a collection of silver, depicted slates, sacred furnishings, sculptures and paintings.The town is famous for a great number of artisans and antiques and restoration work-shops. in August, which is an exhibition of antiques laid out along the streets of the town. On the opposite side of the river there is Arcola with its many-towered castle (municipality offi ces today) and its pentagonal tower, Trebiano was the Bishop residence. The River Magra fl ows tranquilly towards the sea and here Bocca di Magra lies with its elegant and hospitable localities towards the sea along the Caprione promontory.Fiumaretta on the opposite bank stretches along a golden sandy beach towards the open sea and Tuscany marked by hotels, campsites and small harbors while Ame-glia, with its castle and Church (XVI century), dominates from high the flatland. Castelnuovo Magra, on the border with Carrara quite defined with the remains of the Malaspina castle where Dante signed the peace treaty with the Bishop of Luni, Antonio da Camilla (1306). The fine parish church preserves Brueghel’s “Road to the Cross”. The impressive eighteenth century town hall houses the first Public Vintage Wines Center of the Lunigiana which promote all the DOC, IGT and products of excellence of the territory (local and regional); a point of interest is the ancient “oil basins” carved from Carrara marble. narrow streets and White Sanctuary and the Madanno of Mirteto, a favourite des-tination for pilgrims near Nicola, ancient hamlet, built on a hill top. In front of the sea there is an archaeological site of the ancient roman city of Luni with its Roman Amphitheatre, the Basilica, the ruins, theatre, temples and the museum which exposes several religious archi-tecture, epigraphic section and private structures Lunese. day in the green “a due passi dal mare” (a hop and a skip from the seaside). A number of wide beaches which are equipped for water sports there is also entertainment in the evenings. Typi-cal dishes of the Magra Valley are; tes-taroli, panigacci, herb pies and a spe-cial cake “spongata”. Fish and seafood dishes are a must with local oil and coupled with one of the local wines from which there is a large selection; DOC dei Colli di Luni suggests the well-known Vermentino with its golden straw color and fruited bouquet is to be enjoyed.
