SMA Solar factory proves its zero carbon green credentials

SMA Solar Technology’s Solar Works 1 factory in Kassel is the world’s largest zero carbon solar PV inverter manufacturing facility

THE SOLAR energy industry

is in high gear and at Solar

Power International 2013 (SPI

’13), October 21-24, McCormick Place,

Chicago, Illinois, participants can plug

into the technologies, personal con-

nections and professional insights that

give rise to new business and learning

opportunities.

Widely regarded as the can’t-miss

industry event of the year, SPI draws

over 15,000 professionals in solar

energy and related fi elds, from 75+

countries. One in six attendees comes

to this global event from outside the

United States. Attendees include

manufacturers, installers and contrac-

tors, distributors, engineering fi rms,

utilities, government representatives

and policy makers, investors and

fi nanciers, architects, builders and

developers—anyone who needs to stay

on top of the latest developments in

solar energy.

Nearly 700 companies represent-

ing the entire solar industry spectrum

exhibit on 300,000 net square feet of

space. Exhibits highlight the lat-

est in PV cells and modules; balance

of systems; material and equipment

suppliers; distributors; integrators;

Greenlight for

New Zealand’s

largest wind farm

GENESIS ENERGY has

received consents to build what

could be New Zealand’s largest

wind farm at Castle Hill, located on

the North Island. The Environment

Court consented following several

months of discussion between Genesis

Energy and local community groups.

The wind farm, which is north of

Masterton and east of Eketahuna, will

comprise up to 286 turbines of up to

860MW in total. “Working closely with

the local community over the past year

has delivered an outstanding result

and having sustainable energy options

of this scale is essential for the future

of New Zealand’senergy generation,”

said Genesis Energy’s chief executive

Albert Brantley.

The development period includes

a 10-year lapse period and a 10-year

construction period. The company has

no immediate plans to start construc-

tion. “These consents are about being

prepared for the future. They will

provide Genesis Energy the ability to

respond to the changing needs of New

Zealanders, our customers, when we

need to,” said Brantley.

PHOTOVOLTAIC INVERTERS

from SMA Solar Technology AG can now offi cially claim to

be manufactured in a zero carbon,

“scope 2”, European manufacturing

facility following an independent audit.

Independent verifi er CICS assessed

the carbon footprint of the company’s

state of the art manufacturing facility

in Germany in April this year. The

audit concluded the factory produces

zero scope 2 carbon emissions (i.e.

those generated by the building and its

manufacturing/production processes)

thanks to a cutting edge combination

of energy effi ciency measures and

renewable energy sources.

The factory is now certifi ed to

the globally recognised ISO 14064-

1:2006 standard covering the scope 2

greenhouse gas emissions. It means

the Solar Works 1 factory in Kassel is

the world’s largest zero carbon solar

PV inverter manufacturing facility to

this scope and boundary.

SPI set to showcase full

spectrum of technology

installers and solar service providers;

thermal solar technologies; concen-

trating solar power (CSP) and solar

thermal electric and concentrating PV

(CPV); publications; and an additional

array of products and services.

SPI presents a full range of op-

portunities to make connections in

Chicago and throughout the solar

energy industry. Build your network

face to face in SPI’s general sessions,

conference sessions, receptions and

training workshops—or as you explore

the dynamic exhibit fl oor.

market through SEIA’s and SEPA’s
