We have more than 30 members in IISc chapter. Membership drives to enrol new students were
conducted. With lot of new students interested to join and another few interested in renewing
their old SPIE memberships, we can proudly say that our strength is best in recent years. We
plan to enrol more students through promotional events.
Chapter Meetings: Some of the executive committee meetings were held on:
• Executive committee meeting on 9 January 2018
• New office members assumed charge
• Executive committee meeting on 16 January 2018
• To decide on financial planning and activities of the year
• Executive committee meeting on 10 April 2018
• To decide on SOAP 2018 and form the organising sub-committee
Chapter Activities:
To increase the involvement of the student members, we have a webpage for the Applied
Photonics Initiative, (API) IISc.
https://sites.google.com/site/appliedphotonicsiisc/spie-chapter.
A facebook group is managed, https://www.facebook.com/groups/spieosaiisc/ (Optics-
Groups-IISc) where all students working in the Optics and Photonics related areas can
coordinate and plan meetups etc. Updates on chapter events and other activities are regularly
posted online. An outlook group also has been created. [email protected]
As per the previous report many activities in the areas of Quantum optics, Nonlinear Optics
and Nanophotonics were conducted. Following are the activities conducted and co-ordinated
by the SPIE-IISc student chapter in the year 2018. The members of the chapter have actively
contributed their time and effort in the organization and functioning of these activities.
Technical Activities
➢ International Day of Light 2018
The International day of Light was celebrated on May 16, 2018 by SPIE IISc chapter.
The SPIE IISc chapter along with OSA and IEEE Photonics Society Chapters of IISc
decided to celebrate the day in the memory of Prof. A Selvarajan, a very illustrious
personality in the field of Photonics in Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and India.
Prof. A Selvarajan (1938-2017) was a faculty in Electrical Communication Engineering
Department of IISc from 1972 to 2000 and the Chairman of the ECE Department from
1995-1999. As the department chairman he was instrumental in leading the department
to Photonics era. He established the Photonics Research Laboratory in ECE and has the
distinction of developing and nurturing one of the very few groups in India working in
both theoretical and experimental areas of photonics. He was member of SPIE, OSA
and various professional bodies and played the key role in starting a biannual
international conference on Photonics in India, in 1991 and 1994, which is now
considered as the biggest and most prestigious photonics conference of the country.
He has held visiting positions in University of Uppsala, Sweden (1969-70), University
of Arizona, USA (1977-79), Technical university of Denmark (1986), University
College, London (1987) and International Center for Theoretical Physics, Italy (1991,
1993). In 2015, Prof. Selvarajan along with his wife donated a sum of Two Million
Rupees to ECE Department to conduct research in Photonics.
Prof. A Selvarajan Memorial Lecture was given by Prof. Bishnu Pal (SPIE Fellow,
Bennette University) on the topic “Progress and Challenges in Fiber Optics and Optical
Communication”. He was also awarded Prof. Selvarajan Memorial Award 2017 for his
contribution to the field of optics and photonics. A photo exhibition was also conducted
as part of the celebration.
➢ Summer School (25-28 July 2018)
Summer school in Optics And Photonics (SOAP) has successfully completed two
editions in July 2018. The event is now our flagship program comprised of tutorials,
demos, lab visits, open talks, student posters and what not!
Summer School in Optics And Photonics (SOAP) 2018 http://www.iisc-soap.co.in/
Venue: Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall, Dept. of ECE, IISc
Summer school in Optics and Photonics was organized by Applied Photonics Initiative
(API), Indian Institute of Science. As the significant part of API, SPIE members had
put diligent effort in the organisation of the program.
This summer school was meant for graduate students, research scholars, post docs and
faculty members currently doing research or plan to do research in the area of optics
and photonics. The school brought together the experts in the field from India and
abroad and provide a platform for interaction with them and networking. Talks were
organised such that 4 hours each of basic and advanced lecturers in three focussed
topics were covered. SPIE Visiting Lecture was organised as part of SOAP. Selected
lectures including SPIE lectures were live telecasted inside IISc campus through LAN.
External participants also got chance to visit IISc labs and the class-100 clean room,
nano fabrication and characterisation facilities at the Centre for Nano Science and
Engineering. Hands on training sessions were conducted for participants in software
and hardware of optical engineering. This included software demo sessions conducted
by PR Lightcom and Lumerical and lab sessions conducted by Fiber Optica and Eagle
Photonics. The student poster session was also conducted as part of SOAP 2018 where
participants across India presented their research work. They were evaluated by IISc
faculty and were given feedback. The Best poster selected by the panel were awarded
cash prize. The new feature of SOAP 2018 was open invited talks where students and
early career professionals were given a chance to give talks before the IISc audience.
The session was open such that interested persons could contact the organisers for
giving talks, and a panel of faculty selected and invited a couple of experts among them
to give talks. Priority was given to early career professionals and certificates were also
given to them. On the third day there was a cultural programme followed by the
networking dinner
No. of speakers: 13; Total lecture hours: 19;

Planned Activities
We have planned Summer school in Optics and Photonics (SOAP 2019), focusing on the topics
(not restricted to) quantum optics and optical communication. This year’s SOAP will feature
industry speakers talking about industry and academia. We intend to use SPIE Visiting lecture
programme towards it.
Various technical workshops are also planned.
Last year we could not visit schools for optics outreach activities due to various reasons. This
will be rectified this year. We have also planned more technical talks at various Educational
Institutions as outreach activity. A team of volunteers are ready for this.
The career guidane program for students in optics and photonics initiated last year will be taken
forward in association with the Placement Cell of the Institute.
