More than 2 years have passed since the first edition of Spin! came out and not once has the editorial staff stopped work-

ing. The great efforts and dedication of the team have brought the journal to improve number after number so here we are now: SPIN! 10 . Many people have been working behind the scenes of Spin! writing, editing, coordinating, supporting for the past years and everyone’s to thank. But this article isn’t about thanking the “Spin!” team, it’s about you. Yes you, the readers. To everyone who has been enjoying our pages, we say thank you and to those who are reading spin! for the first time we say, here are ten reasons why you should start. - EMILY SABET 5E & PHOTO BY ELISA CARUCCI 4D

5. News from the world- the Spin! journalists keep you up-dated on events and stories from outside school, even though you probably already read newspa-pers for that matter.

1. The articles are written in different lan-guages – try challenging yourself by reading in French, English, Italian, German and Chi-nese! We’re sure you’ll love it once you get used to it. After all, we really are an interna-tional school.

7. Support the team- by reading “Spin!” you are encouraging the editorial staff to continue work-ing hard to make it happen. It’s always great to know our classmates read the journal and share it with others!

6. Check out the pho-tographs and illustra-tions – even though they look neater on the online version of the journal. As a team we always try to pair each article to some-thing visual, which makes “Spin!” even a better read.

4. Tell us your opinion – if you think “Spin!” should look different, surely you need to have an idea of how it is at the moment. We are open to all suggestions and new entries are wel-come! Give constructive criticism on how to improve the journal and we’ll be grateful.

2. You can read about school events and initiatives – we all know how important it is to be updated and informed about what’s going on in school. So many projects happen at the same time, it can be hard to keep track of everything.

8. Fight boredom, play games – most numbers of “Spin!” in-clude a selection of games on the last page. Have fun with su-dokus, crossed words, riddles, wordsearchs and many more. If teachers see you distracted by the school journal during class, they won’t be that angry after all.

SCHOOL TRIPLA SCUOLA IN BIANCO

La settimana del 13 Gennaio le classi prime (eccetto la B) si sono recate per tre giorni in gita a Limone, Pie-

monte. La 1E e la 1D sono state coinvolte nel primo turno disponibile e raggiunte il mercoledì dalle sezioni C ed A e hanno avuto la possibilità di sciare con loro per una giornata.Le classi sono state ac-compagnate dalle profes-soresse Nex, Rasi, Aprà e Gandini, anche loro partecipi all’attività. I tre giorni sono stati riempiti da varie lezioni di sci e noi ragazzi siamo stati divisi in tre gruppi: principianti, medi ed esperti. Le due serate invece sono state trascorse or-ganizzando due differenti attività: la prima, una lezione

sugli sci e sull’adeguato equipaggiamento; nella seconda serata invece è stata organizzata una ciaspolata. Forniti di ciaspole, noi ragazzi abbiamo percorso una pista in-nevata e, al termine della camminata, sono stati offerti the caldo e panettone. Si sono tutti divertiti, ma, per esserne veramente certi, ho posto qualche domanda ai ragazzi che sono venuti in gita, per sentire il loro parere. A entrambe le domande la maggioranza dei partecipanti ha risposto allo stesso modo:

Come avete trovato le piste?Ci siamo tutti divertiti; gli istruttori erano disponibili e le piste adeguate per il nostro livello.Anche chi non ha mai sciato ha trovato l’attività, nono-stante le difficoltà, molto divertente, tralasciando la sco-modità e il dolore provocati dagli scarponi, non essen-doci abituati.

Vi è piaciuta la ciaspolata? Come l’avete trovata?Ascoltando i pareri dei ragazzi ho capito che la ciaspo-lata, seppure fosse una bella iniziativa, non a tutti è pia-ciuta. Questo perché si era molto stanchi, affaticati (spe-cie chi non aveva mai sciato) ed anche l’ora era tarda. Eppure i fumogeni tricolori (rossi, bianchi e verdi) sono stati una sorpresa così com’è stato piacevole il the caldo a fine camminata.

L’iniziativa presa dalla scuola è stata molto interessante e il messaggio era solo uno: i gruppi non sono di lavoro, ma di unione e aiuto; questo è quello che dovevamo im-parare. - ESTER ZIARATI 1E

On the Conference:We are in the middle of the desert. Skyscrapers shooting into a cloud-less sky, artificial islands emerging near the shore you cannot tread on, as it is forbidden; we are in the land of modern day slavery but also of Al-Jazeera. We are here to talk about social progress through sport activity (the sheikh is keen on sport). The 3 day long conference we are attending is called Doha Goals and brings together ath-letes, students, ministers for sport and education and sport association’s presidents. The event is mainly divided into three parts: interviews, debates and round tables. In the first two cases the students are allowed to assist and make occasional questions; in the last case you get the chance to sit at a table with athletes and experts on the field, to work out possible solutions to common problems. Some of the topics were: how to fight corruption in sport, how to use sport to reintegrate former inmates into society, how to use the budget for big sport events, such as the Olym-pic Games, while think-ing about the positive and negative long term effects it can have on the host city.

On the Culture:The very first impression about Qa-tar ended up to be the leitmotiv of the whole experience, as it frequently

happens: we were travelling by bus and nobody was in the streets, or quite so. Indeed, roads were liter-ally covered by blue suits, containing men, workers. I, Vale, said : “Ragazzi, guardate, qua lavorano tutti”. Everybody instinctively laughed, but, truth be told,in, five days we saw a skyscraper grown of 3 floors and suspicious noise at night. Women in complete burqas wearing Swarovski-covered pink heels, little girls hav-ing to dress to have a swim in the hotel’s mixed pri-vate pool; images we don’t see everyday, that remain stuck on our minds, just like the bitter-sweet contrast of colours of the couples walking down the streets: the man in white, the woman in black, standing side by side.

Scendo dal pullman. Attraverso la strada e inizio ad avviarmi verso la passerella che mi porta dall’altra

parte del Po. Molti pensieri mi attraversano la testa, tutti insieme, e, per aggiungerne uno - sperando che gli al-tri finiscano - attacco le cuffiette al telefono e inizio ad ascoltare la musica. Comincio ad attraversare il ponte facendo attenzione, come sempre, quando arrivo a metà strada così, in caso di emergenza, so da che parte correre. Arrivo oltre al palo che segna il cambio di via d’emergenza e vedo una coppia con un bambino di circa un anno. Ormai loro non sono molto giovani, ma si tengono per mano e si guar-dano come se si fossero appena trovati. Non so esat-tamente perché, ma inspiegabilmente quella coppia ha attirato la mia attenzione.Passati loro, vedo due bambini, probabilmente appena tornati dal parco giochi, con le rispettive mamme che li seguono. I due piccoli ridono come solo i bimbi riescono a fare, saltano e, infine, si fermano e si guardano per un secondo. Dopo uno dei due sfiora la guancia dell’altro con le labbra e, subito, il gioco così divertente di prima riprende.Mi giro per guardare dietro ai due piccini che stanno trot-terellando via, quando sfioro per sbaglio la giacca di una signora anziana, accompagnata da un suo coetaneo. Le mani del signore sono ambedue invisibili: una porta il carrello della spesa e l’altra… Guardo nuovamente per vedere se la mano dell’anziano sia veramente nella tasca del cappotto della sua dama. È così: probabilmente sia

per il freddo sia per mostrare affetto verso l’altro, i due hanno unito le mani in una tasca calda in una giornata in cui sembra che tutti siano comignoli. Improvvisamente sento freddo e mi giro verso il sole che sta tramontando. Vedo tutti i lucchetti con sopra inciso scritte come F+S=amore. Giovani fidanzati che in un tempo non ben chiaro si sono amati.È strano, ma tutto ciò a cui riesco a pensare sono la quantità di perso-ne che si vogliono bene che ho visto in meno di 3 mi-nuti di canzone, dai più piccoli ai più anziani. Ormai dicono che sulla Terra tutti siano crudeli ma io non credo che ciò sia del tutto vero.San Valentino ol-tre alla festa dei fidanzati dovreb-be essere anche la festa di chi crede nell’amo-re e nell’altro. LA SHOAH OUBLIER OU SE RAPPELER ?

Même si soixante-neuf ans ont passé depuis la libé-ration d’Auschwitz, on se souvient encore de cet

événement important de l’histoire du monde. Nous avons choisi de nous en rappeler parce que jamais plus quelque chose comme la Shoah ne doit arriver, et parce qu’entre 5 et 6 millions de juifs ont trouvé la mort. Souvent, à l’école, on décide de s’en rappeler en regardant des films ou en lisant des textes, et puis on fait toujours une minute de silence.Mais cette année, au Spinelli, on a choisi de célébrer ce jour de mémoire en recevant le groupe de musique “Les Nuages Ensemble”, composé de 4 jeunes filles (Alessandra Osella, Lucia Marino, Anna Paraschici et Elisabetta Bosio) qui jouent du violon, de la contre-basse, de la clarinette et de l’accordéon. Elles jouent de la musique klezmer, typique de la tradition juive.On leur a demandé pourquoi elles jouent cette mu-sique-là. Elles nous ont répondu : “On l’aime beaucoup car c’est une musique joyeuse mais triste en même temps. Peut-être qu’on peut dire qu’elle a deux âmes :

une âme festive et une âme pleine de douleur, de cette population qui n’a jamais connu la paix et la sérénité”. Selon les étudiants, cette forme de mémoire a davan-tage impliqué les jeunes que la vision d’un film. sche Thronfolger Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand ermor-det wird. Man sollte meinen, ein hundert Jahre seien keine ganz lange Zeit. Doch keine eigenen Bekannten sind direkte Zeugen, denn die Personen, die im ersten Weltkrieg gekämpft oder ihn überlebt hatten, sind schon gestorben.

Es ist wichtig, die Un-terschiede zu kennen und zu verstehen, die der erste Weltkrieg mitgebracht hat. Der erste Weltkrieg sollte

eigentlich werden: „der Krieg um die Kriege zu been-den“, aber es war eben nicht so. Zwanzig Jahre später ist der Zweite Weltkrieg ausgebrochen. Die größten Un-terschiede dieser neuen Kriege zu den vorherigen sind viele. Am wichtigsten ist, dass die Bürger vorher nicht

an den Kriegen teilgenommen haben und dass diese Kriege geholfen haben, soziale und politische Rechte zu erreichen.Der Völkerbund und später die UNO haben den Frieden gehalten. Die neuen Generationen haben den Krieg oder die Angst des Kriegs nicht kennen gelernt. Viele alte Leu-te und Erwachsene haben wenig Erinnerung und auch wenig Interesse. Die Personen, die den Leuten erzählen können, ob jener Krieg richtig ist, sind alt oder schon ge-storben. Deswegen haben Jugendliche heutzutage und in der Zukunft nicht mehr die Möglichkeit haben,das zu erfahren.In der Schule wird Geschichte fast immer nur als Daten und Fakten gelehrt. Man soll aber auch lehren, wie die zwei Weltkriege stattfinden konnten und wie es möglich war, dass niemand (oder wenige) dagegen waren. Man soll sich daran erinnern, dass Jugendliche bei der Anga-be des eigenen Alters gelogen haben, um an dem Krieg teilzunehmen.Dieses Jahr wird man für die Mandate der Europäischen Union wählen. Es ist wichtig, dass man an der Wahl teil-nimmt. Chinese New Year, the most important holiday of the Han culture

Also known as the spring festival (春 is a part of the word spring)), the Chinese New Year is a moment to

have fun and celebrate with family and friends. This oc-currence changes date every year: it is always between January 21st and February 19th. This year it was on Jan-

uary 31st.The Chinese New Year includes many different traditions.The traditional knots, usually red (consid-

ered to be, by Chinese people, the luckiest color), are al-ways hung in the houses. They symbolize the close and happy relations between family and friends: they repre-sent “being together”.Outside, on the doors of houses or on tree branches, people hang red pieces of paper with wishes for the New Year.Two people wearing the same costume, dressed as a monster, go around the streets performing the “lion dance”. This monster was thought to come out of his cave every 12 months to scare humans. One day, a boy and an old man fought this beast making loud noises and setting off fireworks. So now, as a tradition, there are

fireworks and people creating a lot of commotion.Food traditions change according to the regions but in the north the most important and typical food is 饺子, dumpling with meat and vegetable stuffing. 饺子 also represent small “packs” stuffed with “luck” and good things for the New Year.With paper and scissors we can also make paper-folding: a typical one represents the 春 character.Also important are the famous lanterns that color the streets of the cities. The Lanterns’ party ends the 春节 (therefore the Chinese New Year), which always lasts two weeks, a time when students don’t attend school and adults don’t go to work.This year is the year of the horse (馬). Canada with Canadian Ben!

Last week, a Canadian guy, named Ben from Nova Scotia came to class 1D to speak about his country.

The class already knew a lot about Canada.It is the 2nd biggest country in the world and is divided

into ten provinces and three territories.It has only 35 million people and it isn’t very densely

populated because it’s a very cold country. In fact, in the winter the temperature can sometimes reach negative 20°C.This cold weather favours winter sports, of which the

most practiced is hockey. One popular team is The Maple Leafs because the maple leaf is one of the symbols of the country. The other sports practiced frequently are skiing

in the Rockies (Rocky Mountains) and ice-skating.The capital of

Canada is Ot-tawa, it is a fed-eral parliamentary democracy, it is bilingual (they speak English and French) and it’s in the northern hemisphere juts above the U.S.A.The most important cities are Toronto (the biggest),

Vancouver where they hosted the Winter Olympics Games in 2010 and Montreal where there is the Rogers Cup tournament.The most popular tourist attraction is Niagara Falls in

the south of the country, near U.S.A.But how did the students find the lesson? Do they want

GRANDI ESORDI SULLA NEVE!Prof e studenti alle gare di sci d’istituto!

La grande passione per la montagna e gli sport inver-nali viene continuamente tramandata dalle prof agli

studenti per farli appassionare alle nostre vette piemon-tesi con competizioni, gite e tanto divertimento!Quest’anno, agli inizi di gennaio, abbiamo gareggiato sulle piste di Bardonecchia-Melezet sotto uno splendido sole.In slalom gigante, nella categoria degli allievi maschili (classi 1° - 2°- 3°) si sono distinti: Perona Alberto, clas-se 2A, con un tempo di 48.42; Bruno Benjamin, classe 1A, con un tempo di 49.42; Provvisiero Sebastiano, della classe 3F, con un tempo di 49.64.Sempre in slalom gigante tra le prime tre classificate della categoria allieve femminile abbiamo due “secondi-ne” e una “terzina”: Obier Irene, classe 2E, con un tem-po di 50.31; Casalotto Cossu Marzia della 3F, con un tempo di 50.58; Colucci Silvia, sempre della 2E, con un tempo di 51.11.Passando ai più grandi, nella categoria maschile juniores (classi 4° - 5°), impresa di Burlando Filippo della classe

5A, con un tempo di 49.32; seguono: Maiolo Enrico, classe 4D, tempo di 49.35; Audino Fi-lippo, classe 5A, con un tempo di 50.44.Ultima categoria, quella femminile juniores. Gran-di prestazioni di: Berruto Eva, classe 4D, con un tempo di 49.13; Perona Alice della classe 4B, con un tempo di 51.81; terza classificata Guida Camilla, clas-se 5B, tempo 52.91.Gli sciatori dello Spinelli sono sportivi, appassionati, con la voglia di partecipare alle iniziative scolastiche e di di-vertirsi tutti insieme sulla neve! Anche “snowbordando” otteniamo buoni risultati: è uno sport che sta attirando molti giovani e speriamo che il prossimo anno gli armati di tavola siano più numerosi! Per ora c’è una sola con-corrente per la categoria allieve femminili: Frison Irene della 3D, con un tempo di 1.23.49. Sono invece accorsi in numero maggiore gli allievi maschili. I primi tre classifi-cati sono Borgogno Filippo della classe 2D, con un tem-po di 1.18.70; Girino Pietro, classe 2A tempo 1.20.89; mente il bronzo è andato a Gattiglia Lorenzo, classe 3E, tempo 1.21.02.Le categorie juniores non hanno avuto molti concorrenti. Nella juniores femminile l’unica partecipante è Ranotti Viola della classe 4B, con un tempo di 1.30.71 e in quel-la maschile l’unico snowborder è Espen Alberto, classe 5E tempo 1.03.90.Un venerdì ricco di emozioni e di passione, divertimento + competizione: è stata la formula perfetta! - CARLOTTA

CAMPESTRE D’ISTITUTOPer gli Spinelliani la voglia di correre non finisce mai...E neanche per le prof!

Ecco il verbo preferito da alcuni studenti dello Spinelli e dalle prof di educazione fisica : correre!

La campestre... Parola che terrorizza i tre quarti degli studenti, ma fa sorridere un piccolo numero di podisti della scuola, che lo scorso mercoledì 8 gennaio hanno gareggiato anche ai Giochi Sportivi Studenteschi del cross al parco della Pellerina. Per pura sfortuna, nono-stante la qualificazione della scuola, i nostri atleti non hanno potuto disputare la finale, poiché le classi prime erano in gita insieme alle prof di ginnastica.Ecco le classifiche della nostra piccola campestre nel cortile della scuola svoltasi alla fine di novembre.Per la categoria degli allievi maschili (classi 1° - 2° - 3°; la gara consisteva in cinque giri di campo), i primi tre clas-sificati sono: Capello Emanuele, classe 1C, tempo 6.35; Monticone Gianluca, classe 2E, tempo 6.38; e Giardi-no Matteo della classe 2A, con un tempo di 6.44.Le allieve femminili dovevano invece correre per quattro

giri di campo. Le classificate sono : Mangialardo Giulia, classe 3D, tempo 5.42, e a pari merito Pairotti Carlot-ta, classe 1D, e Ghiringhelli Eleonora, classe 2C, con un tempo di 6.14.Per i più grandi, gli juniores maschili (classi 4° - 5°; cin-que giri di campo), i primi a tagliare il traguardo sono stati: Navone Carlo, classe 4A, tempo 6.25; Cuniberti Andrea, della classe 5D, con un tempo di 6.26; e Verna Daniele di 4D con un tempo di 6.32.Le uniche due juniores femminili che hanno fatto quattro giri di campo, sono: Gotta Giulia della classe 5C, con un tempo di 5.44; e Berruto Eva della classe 4D, con un tempo di 6.45. Anche in questa competizione, sebbene con un minor numero di atleti, tanta voglia di partecipare e di gareg-giare.Voglia di correre, desiderio di far apprezzare questo sport a più persone possibile. Snowboard cross: troppo pericoloso?

Il 16 febbraio a Sochi sono state disputate le gare di snowboard

cross femminile.Questa disciplina olimpica rela-tivamente nuova appassiona e spaventa tutti gli spettatori. Sfor-

tunatamente sono molti gli infortuni cau-sati da questo sport, in cui gli atleti parto-no in gruppi da sei e cercano di tagliare il

traguardo prima degli avversari. Nella finale della com-petizione femminile un’azzurra, Michela Moioli, è stata gravemente ferita a causa di uno scontro con una con-corrente bulgara. L’atleta si è rotta il legamento crociato del ginocchio sinistro. L’italiana non è l’unica ad essersi infortunata. Durante le prove un’atleta russa è caduta fratturandosi la colonna vertebrale. Negli anni passati ci sono stati anche casi in cui degli atleti sono morti pra-ticando questo sport, come nella Coppa del Mondo del 2002, nella quale Nick Zoricic è morto sul colpo dopo essere atterrato di testa dopo un salto andato male. In questi giorni molti stanno discutendo se valga la pena di continuare a proporre questa disciplina alle Olimpiadi, o se non sia invece troppo pericolosa. Quale sarà l’esi-to di questa discussione? Nowadays it is common to see snowboard half pipe races, in which riders do insane tricks with nume-

rous flips but it wasn’t like this in the past. Snowboard Half pipe is a young Olympic discipline. The first time this discipline appeared in the Olympics was in 1998. Originally the tricks athletes completed were very sim-ple but now they are truly acrobatic movements. This is also due to the methods athletes use to training nowa-days compared to then. In the early 2000s there were very few half pipes but now many competitive athletes have ones made just for them by their sponsors. In order to practice their tricks these athletes also have giant airbags for which to land on if their tricks fail. In the early days of this sport the best athletes could ma-nage to do was switching their front foot with their back foot by turning 180 degrees while in the air. Now one of the many tricks is doing 1080 degree spins while flying 8 meters in the air.Snowboarding tricks are always getting more compli-cated every year and spectators are always excited to see what the athletes will pull off next. - PIETRO VALETTO 1D

sesta Olimpiade in cui gareggia. Il campione ha chiuso al terzo posto la gara individuale di slittino su pista artifi-ciale, subito dopo il tedesco Loch e il russo Demchenko. Mai nessun atleta praticante qualsiasi sport era riuscito prima di lui a vincere in sei anni consecutivi una meda-glia alle Olimpiadi. Per questa ragione egli entra di diritto nella leggenda dello sport mondiale.La prima volta in cui ha vinto i Giochi Olimpici Inverna-li è stato nel 1994 a Lillehammer: da quell’anno, ogni quattro anni, ha aggiunto alla sua collezione una meda-glia in più. Nel 1994 si è aggiudicato il terzo posto come quest’anno e come nel 2010 a Vancouver. Ha ottenuto la medaglia d’argento nel 1998 a Nagano, e il primo posto sul podio l’ha conquistato nel 2002 a Salt Lake City, e nel 2006 in casa, a Torino.In Alto Adige, regione di cui è originario, le reazioni sono state assai positive. Il presidente della Provincia Arno Kompatscher ha affermato: “Un grande esempio per tutti gli sportivi, un modello di serietà e professionalità, una ga-ranzia di successo”. “E’ la conferma di un talento e di un impegno eccezionali, che ne fanno un campione unico”, ha sottolineato inoltre l’assessore provinciale. THE BUTLERUN MAGGIORDOMO ALLA CASA BIANCA

La stagione cinematografica di quest’inverno, bi-sogna dirlo, non è niente male: se si vuole vede-

re un buon film, c’è solo l’imbarazzo della scelta.Io, personalmente, ho apprezzato particolarmente “The Butler” di Lee Daniels.Il film ripercorre le tappe della conquista dei diritti civili della popolazione di colore statunitense, attraverso gli occhi di Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), maggiordomo alla Casa Bianca dal 1957 al 1986. Tale avvenimenti sono presi in considerazione anche dal punto di vista del figlio di Cecil, Louis (David Oyelowo), che aderirà a vari movimenti di protesta, quali quelli ispirati da Mar-tin Luther King. L’aspetto più interessante di questa pellicola, a mio avviso, è proprio il rapporto tra Cecil e suo figlio, la differente visione che hanno del loro pa-ese e del suo governo, l’apparente sottomissione del più anziano alle discriminazioni razziali contro l’auda-ce lotta del più giovane. Consiglio questo film a chiun-que abbia due ore del proprio tempo da dedicarvi: non è una v i s i o n e leggera, di sicuro non si tratta di cinema di puro intratteni-mento, ma credo ci sia una certa p rofo n di-tà in esso.
