Jacksonville, FL − Spinnaker print has decided to go glossy. The news publication
announced that, starting in September, the Spinnaker will be printed as a magazine and will
focus on narrative storytelling for the features that appear on its pages.
But you don’t have to wait to get your news and entertainment — the Spinnaker also is
now a daily news operation and stories will be regularly posted to UNFSpinnaker.com.
Editor in Chief Jacob Harn said, “The current media trend is to go digital-first. But print
is still alive and well on college campuses. These decisions will elevate our platforms’ products.”
The Spinnaker has come a long way from its original product in 1974, which was then
called the Halyard. With UNF’s President Thomas Carpenter’s interim support in 1977, and a
demand from the student body for a free press, the newspaper officially restarted as the
Spinnaker August 17 that same year. And in 1995, Spinnaker started its website.
In the summer of 2009 the Spinnaker’s staff decided to switch from the traditional
broadsheet format to the more magazine-styled tabloid newspaper. And the Spinnaker’s current
staff will take the print product to the next level in quality.
Deliberation over the decision included market research, analyzing media trends, and
conducting a campus wide survey, which gathered the opinions of over 500 students,
faculty/staff, and alumni.
The last issue as a tabloid newspaper will be released the first week of UNF’s fall
semester, followed by the first magazine Sept. 4.
