    A Word from Farrell. . .

    Dear Woodmont,

This is my shout-out to our amazing Spire bookstore! Here's a little secret! After the 9:30 service, exit through the side doors into our Fellowship Hall, grab a cup of green tea, and then enjoy a few

blessed moments perusing the book shelves of our very own Woodmont bookstore! Faye Tevebaugh and Willie Bandyknow their books well and would be delighted to introduce you to a good read or order something of your choosing! They also love recommendations! In this spirit, I offer you my favorite daily devotionals. Each of these remain in astack on my bedside table and have turned into faithful friends!

1.A Diary of Private Prayer by John Baillie:

This is a special little book of morning and evening prayers that are written as direct conversations with God. Don't befrightened off by the formal language. The words invite you into a deeper relationship with God. I love the book-endidea of this devotional; opening and closing of my day with God.

2.Listening to Your Life by Frederick Buechner:

This devotional is a collection of the best meditations from one of my favorite theologians. Buechner has a creative

way of looking at life and faith. He always encourages me to look for God in my day to day living. On January 1st, hewrites, There is no event so commonplace but that God is present within it, always hidden, always leaving you roomto recognize him or not to recognize him. Listen to your life!

    3. Streams in the Desert by L.B. Cowen:I was given this devotional by a friend during the year my son was treated for cancer and it continues to speak to medeeply. Each day begins with a scripture and then a short, yet thought-provoking meditation. I have ear-marked andscribbled all over this book!

4.Bread for the Journey by Henri Nouwen

It doesn't get much better than Nouwen for me! He covers everything; love, peace, healing, death, communion, friendship, prayer, and the list goes on! The meditations are short and manna for the spirit!

    5. Bread and Wine, Readings for Lent and EasterThis is not a daily devotional but a collection of readings by the greats like C.S. Lewis, Madeleine LEngle, HenriNouwen, and Barbara Brown Taylor. A brilliant way to fully engage your mind and your heart this Easter season!

I buy books! Nothing makes me happier than a stack of books on my bedside table, or adding another book to mybook-shelf collection!

Lets meet this Sunday at Spire Books!

    Love,Farrell

A Word from Kent. . .God is Pure Love

The Woodmont Youth had a fantastic weekend at Bethany Hills on our Winter Retreat. Fun-filled,relationship-building fellowship and love-focused spiritual formation in one of the most beautiful settingsaround these parts who could ask for more?! Thank you to all of you who encouraged us through prayerand supported us in so many other ways. Praise be to our God who was present in transformational ways in each one of olives!

The scriptural focus for the weekend was 1 John, with the main theme centered around 1 John 4:18 There is no fearlove. But perfect love drives out fear. One spiritual insight that became increasingly clear to us was that fear is at the rootso many of the insecurities that teenagers struggle with every day. Whether it involves relationships, academic, athletic, anor other extracurricular performance, keeping up with the vast number of necessary activities that consume ones time, ormuch else fear pervades. Teen angst lives on.

However, perfect love the love of God in Jesus Christ drives out these fears. Gods love casts away all insecuritiesknow this for a fact, just as many of you likely also know. I have experienced Gods perfect love. Not that I am perfect (from it) but that Gods love for me, for all of us, is perfect. And when we allow Gods love to embrace us in a way tconsumes, all angst, insecurity, and fear will be driven out.

A Word from Justin . . .Doing Life Together

On Monday, January 16, 2012, I awoke more eager to go to work than I had in some time. This was myfirst official day as a minister at Woodmont Christian Church. Brimming with nervous excitement, I droveearly in the morning to 3601 Hillsboro Road. All the way, I asked God to bless and guide me, strengthen and sustain mprepare and equip me to join you in serving the Lord.

Small groups have always been integral to my walk with the Lord. As I grew-up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, I wa part of a small group. Stewart and Stuart, two members of that group, are friends to this day. As I went to college at tUniversity of Richmond, I was a part of a small group. Joe and Derek, two members of that group, are friends to this day. AI prepared for the pastorate at Princeton Theological Seminary, I was a part of a small group. Henry and Kent, two membeof that group, are friends to this day.

Even now, squarely in adulthood, I treasure the experience of being in a small group of Christians that meets regularlTogether, we study Scripture, pray, worship, and serve. We rejoice and sorrow with each other. We laugh with each other times of plenty and support each other in times of want. In short, we simply do life together. It is such a joy that Imcompelled to say that being in a small group is one of the best decisions one could ever make.

I wonder if you have tasted the sweetness of Christian fellowship. Do you know the joy of having a true and trusted frien

in faith? Do you know the relief of having someone you can really depend on as near as your telephone? Do you know thwarmth of a meal delivered to you upon returning from the hospital? Do you know the strength of a friends arm around yoin a season of sorrow? Do you know the pleasure of having fellow pilgrims on this Christian journey? God did not design to live apart from intimate community. So, in the time ahead, if you are not already, I ask you to prayerfully consider joinina small group of Christians and know the joy of doing life together.

One of the main reasons why I awoke on Monday, January 16, 2012, was to begin playing a role in making WoodmoChristian Church not just a church with small groups, but a church of small groups. I realize - and hope that you dtoo - that this is far beyond my human cunning and craft. If it is done at all, it must be by the transforming power of the HolSpirit. So, I ask you to join me in singing and praying the words of that triumphant hymn: Blessed be the tie that binds ouhearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above!

    ~Justin

(God is Pure Love... continued form page 3)

This is not an instantaneous process. And it certainlycomes and goes, just as we wander to and fro from Godsembrace. But it is a reality that is best illustrated, in myhumble opinion, by the Parable of the Loving Father. When the prodigal son - who had chased after the world, found rejection, and ended up in the muckety muck of theworld was still a long way off, the father saw him, tookoff running, and embraced him with hugs and kisses. Itwas party time! This is our God who loves you and me.And it is this love that drives out all fear.

I shared a story with the youth this weekend about ourGod who is love. When I worked at a homeless mission, there was a man there named Perry. Perry was quitedifficult to deal with. He was quite sick suffering fromcancer, AIDS, mental illness, substance abuse and his poor life choices had alienated him from those aroundhim, especially family and friends. Perry had chased afterthe world and the world had rejected him. However, there were moments when Gods light shone through hisdarkness and the goodness within broke through. WhenPerry ended up in the hospital for the last time, he wascompletely alone. In fact, on his hospital form he putdown the homeless mission as his emergency contact. Sowhen the end was in sight, I was called to visit.Reluctantly, I went to his bedside, and eventuallysomehow got up the courage to ask him, Perry, are youready? You know, in that moment I was more fearfulthan he was, because he looked straight in my eye andsaid, Pastor Kent, God is pure love. God is pure love. There was no fear in this all-consuming pure love of God,

only loving acceptance and the confidence of eternal life.

May we be a love-consumed people! Allow God toembrace you with kisses and throw a party for you. Livein peace, all fears driven out, secure in Gods pure Love.We love because God first loved us. Hallelujah!

    Construction Coming

The board has recentlyapproved moving forward on anew construction project. The roofthat runs between the bridge andthe sanctuary unfortunately drainsdirectly onto the concrete ledge

and outer walkways. This water ends up damaging thewalls and doors with potential for more extensive damageto other structures. Damage has been manageable up tothis point.

The plan is to extend the roof so that the rain willdrain onto the ground rather than into the building. TheProperty committee has thoroughly investigated thisproblem. We feel that now is the time to move forwardwith the construction. This project will be financedthrough the property reserve fund. No money will beborrowed to complete this task.

Our hope is that the construction will be completed ina reasonable period of time. Significant effort has beendirected maintaining the structural integrity and beauty ofour property.

    ~Porter Meadors

8000 miles for 8000 kids! Thank you Woodmont.

When the Woodmont Group traveled to Guatemalalast summer, we had the privilege of joining thecelebratory steps to complete the 8000 mile walkmade by CFCA founder (age 75!) and staff. 8000miles, with the goal of shedding light on families inpoverty. The walk inspired an effort to find sponsorsfor 8000 children, one child for every mile walked.

Through the rain, we rode, we walked and finally, weran up the final hill to the CFCA center. It is anunderstatement to say that it was a huge day of celebration in the city of San Lucas.

At the time, about 1600 children and aging adults had been sponsored during the time frame of the walk. Wewondered how they would ever make it to 8000, and we were a part of the solution. Thank you Woodmont forhelping spread the Love to these people in need.

Woodmont has focused its sights on Guatemala, but CFCA works in 22 countries and helps over 300,000 childrenand aging worldwide. You can learn more about CFCA, the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, atcfcausa.org and you can Like CFCA on Facebook.

    Muchas gracias, many thanks!
