The Banana Festival activities are coming thick and fast! Last weekend (Saturday July 13) we had a Cake Stall

with our usual Sausage Sizzle outside Mitre 10 in Wollumbin Street. It was a great success with virtually all sold

out. On Sunday we had a Car Observation Rally to Kyogle and Border Ranges National Park, and this also was a

great success with ten cars containing around 28 people taking part. All very good and social events, and all

supported well by our members, Tammy and her family and the members of Story Dogs, Tammy‘s chosen charity.

This weekend is not so hectic, just a Tenpin Bowling night at Tweed Tenpin, to give those teams who ―should have

won‖ a chance to try again. Then on Saturday July 27 (note, not this Saturday) we will do another Cake Stall with

our Sausage Sizzle. Thank you to all who donated cakes and other items last time, we hope you will do it all again.

And don‘t forget the Games Night at

Jack‘s place on August 3, lots of fun,

and a new exciting event on Sunday

August 11 at Judy Mason‘s—High

District Office Bearers FROM WHERE I SIT by David

Back to normal numbers last week 16th July, and a very enjoyable meeting it was. We welcomed Warren O'Brien, Anthony Idle (who had sold a whole book of Motor Cycle Raffle Tickets - something which takes Michael, Denis and me a day or so to achieve when we're really concentrating on the matter - so well done Anthony), Cathie Heffernan, and our Presenter for the evening, Simone Wong, District Youth Services Officer. She gave a good presentation, covered all the bases of RYLA RYTeS MUNA etc, and spent some time on YEP - possibly we can join with the other two Clubs to send one out and receive one student in?

We welcomed Jack Heffernan back from Norfolk Island.

One member voiced an opinion regarding Grace last Tuesday - Judy Mason felt that we should recognise the essential Christian background in this Country. I have heard nothing more against the idea of abandoning the Grace. Similarly, Denis Hallworth suggested that the Four Way Test isn't ideal either. Several members agreed with abandoning the Grace, but declined to comment further. Anni Brownjohn introduced an International Toast, toasting the RC of Singapore. This was good as she gave us a short run-down on the Club. We shall pursue this line for a while, while keeping all options open. This illustrates my principles in action: if you have ANYTHING to say, any suggestions to offer, be assured that my door is always open: I want to hear.

Tammy Dundon had a cake stall on Saturday, which did very well, and we thank all those ladies (and a few gentlemen) who contributed cakes. What with $150 donated out of the Sausage Sizzle takings that morning, she made about $500, and a further $200-odd on the Sunday which was a very successful Car Observation Rally.

We are still raffling a motor cycle! Over $600 so far. See us for access to the Banana Festival Office, to put the motor cycle on show and garner some ticket sales.

Next week we go walkabout for the first time this year, and we dine on Wednesday night at the Kathmandu Kitchen at Kingscliff.

In all these projects, and others as we go, this small Club is Leading the Way, to ENGAGE ROTARY AND CHANGE LIVES. Let's keep it going.

Some of the team at the first Cake Stall and Sausage Sizzle on Saturday July 13.

The morning was very successful and raised $360 from cake sales and $150 from

sausage sizzle, all going toward our Banana Festival Queen‘s charity, Story Dogs.

Thought of the day

"Not only is there no God, but try finding a plumber on Sunday."

- Woody Allen (1935-)

THE OBJECT OF

ROTARY

To encourage and foster

the ideal of service as a

basis of worthy enterprise

and, in particular, to

encourage and foster

1 The development of

acquaintance as an

opportunity for service

2 High ethical standards

i n b u s i n e s s a n d

p r o f e s s i o n s ; t h e

recognition of worthiness

of all useful occupations;

and the dignifying by each

Rotarian of his occupation

as an opportunity to serve

society

3 The application of the

ideal of service by every

Rotarian to his personal,

business and community

life

4 The advancement of

i n t e r n a t i o n a l

understanding, goodwill

and peace through a world

fellowship of business and

professional men united in

the ideal of service

NOTES

of the things

we think, say or do.

1 Is it the TRUTH ?

2 Is it FAIR to all

concerned ?

3 Will it build GOODWILL

and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS ?

4 Will it be BENEFICIAL to

all concerned ?

VALE With sadness we advise members that Past District Governor George Lake, the

District Governor at the Charter of our club, passed away on Saturday July 13.

George was certainly a character of our District, and I am sure we all have fond

memories of George. This District has been built on the strengths of people such as

George, and we are very proud and honoured to have had him serve Rotary for

such a long time. George has touched many people‘s lives over the years, and we

thank him for his Service Above Self.

END POLIO NOW Here are five numbers you should know about

the fight against polio and how you can help win

it.

1. 99 percent reduction in polio cases: In the

past 25 years, the number of polio cases has

dropped by more than 99 percent, from an

estimated 350,000 cases in 1988 to just 223 last

year – the lowest number ever.

2. 10 million walking: Since the Global Polio

Eradication Initiative launched, immunization

against polio has saved more than 10 million

children from paralysis according to the World

Health Organization.

3. Only 3 endemic countries: Polio remains endemic in just three countries –

Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. This means that transmission of the disease has

never been stopped in these countries. Until this happens, other countries are at risk

of importing this highly contagious disease.

4. Failure could result in up to 200,000 new cases annually: As long as polio

remains anywhere, it‘s a threat everywhere. According to the World Health

Organization, failure to eradicate polio could, within 10 years, result in as many as

200,000 new cases worldwide every year.

5. $40 billion - $50 billion in savings: Economic models estimate that ending polio

would save between US$40 billion to US$50 billion over the 20 years following

eradication.

We are closer than ever to ridding the world of polio, but finishing the job will

require resources and commitment.

Recommit to promise made to the children of the world over 27 years ago. END

POLIO NOW!

Child Protection Matters At our meeting last week, Simone Wong discussed many Rotary projects relating to Youth programs.

As part of that discussion the matter of the new Working With Children Check was mentioned, and although

some members had some information there was great uncertainty of the requirements relating to Rotarians

who volunteer to help on the various Rotary youth programs. Below is the web page of the Office of the

Children‘s Guardian with details of the new system. The next page shows the phase-in schedule, which for

Rotary is 1st Jan to 31st Dec 2015. More details are shown on the web site.

The woman applying for a job in a

lemon orchard in Orange, seemed to

be far too qualified for the job; given

her arts and education degrees from

Sydney University and her job as a

social worker and school teacher.

The foreman frowned and said, I

have to ask you this: "Have you had

any actual experience in picking

lemons?"

"Well, as a matter of fact, I have!"

"I've been divorced three times,

owned two Fords, supported the

Wallabies, and I voted for Kevin."

Two ministers are discussing their

lives in the church, and one of them

says, "I never slept with my wife until

after we were married. How about

you?" the second preacher thinks for a

second, scratches his head, and says,

"I'm not sure, what was her maiden

name?"

In the backwoods of Arkansas, Mr.

Stewart's wife went into labor in the

middle of the night. The doctor was

called in to assist in the delivery.

To keep the nervous father-to-be

busy, the doctor handed him a lantern

and said, "Here, you hold this high so

I can see what I'm doing." Soon, a

baby boy was brought into the world.

"Don't be in a rush to put the lantern

down. I think there's yet another wee

one to come." Sure enough, within

minutes he had delivered another

baby.

"Now don't be in a great hurry to be

putting down that lantern, young man.

It seems there's yet another!" cried the

doctor.

The new father scratched his head in

bewilderment and asked the doctor.

"Do ya think it's the light that's

attractin' them?"

There was a lawyer and he was just

waking up from anesthesia after

surgery, and his wife was sitting by

his side. His eyes fluttered open and

he said, ―You're beautiful!‖ and then

he fell asleep again. His wife had

never heard him say that so she stayed

by his side. A couple minutes later his

eyes fluttered open and he said

―You're cute!‖ Well, the wife was

dissapointed because instead of

―beautiful‖ it was ―cute.‖ She said

―What happened to ‗beautiful‘? His

reply was ―The drugs are wearing

off!‖

A Welshman, an Englishman and a

Irishman were being chased by

Farmer Giles with a shotgun. After

10 minutes of running they spotted a

barn and ran inside.

Once inside they each hid in a old

sack against the barn wall. The

farmer went into the barn but did not

see where they went, he was about to

turn back when he saw three

suspicious looking sacks. He walked

forward and prodded the first sack

with his gun. The Englishman inside

said... ''Meow'.'

"Just cats," he thought.

He then prodded the second sack.

The Welshman, hearing how the

Englishman got off said... ''Woof'.'

"Just dogs," he thought.

As he walked towards the last sack,

the Irishman worked out what he

was going to say. As soon as the

farmer prodded his sack he said...

''Potatoes!''

The Club Song

We‘ve come to introduce you to the Murwillumbah Central boys,

The way you know that we‘re around is when you hear the noise,

There‘s tenors, basses, inbetweens, and some just here for show,

But all the same we‘ll sing to you, so boys just ‗Let ‗er go‘.

When Governor Georgie, gave us our charter,

He kissed our Rotaryannes to make it right,

We‘ve come to greet you, because we‘re after,

All the fun and fellowship that‘s going tonight.

So put it there!
