Spirit of Ireland Media Pack 2010

TRANSCRIPT

Media Pack

For Irish immigrants in the 1800’s America was the land of dreams. Early immigrant letters described America as a land of abundance and urged others to follow them through the “Golden Door.” From 1830 to 1914 almost five million Irish headed for the land of opportunity. Many others made the same journey however the Irish were unique among immigrants. They fiercely loved America but never gave up their allegiance to Ireland. They loved America and gladly fought in her wars forming among other groups, the famous Irish Bri-gade. This unique experience formed an inextricable link between Ireland and America and today according to CNN a staggering 40 million Americans claim Irish Heritage.

Our two nations benefit greatly from a shared heritage and a strong sense of culture. There have been Irish American presidents and strong support for Ireland from the Whitehouse, reinforced by Bill Clinton’s visit to Ireland fifteen years ago and in 2011 the hugely successful visit of President Obama who sums up the special relationship perfectly “an American doesn’t really require Irish blood to understand that ours is a proud, enduring, centuries-old relationship; that we are bound by history and friendship and shared values. “

The Spirit of Ireland magazine is a celebration of Irish American success, craft and culture. No matter what side of the Atlantic we reside in, for the many millions of Irish living away from Irish soil, there’s no place like home.
