Member’s Favorite Effect & Trade Night

One time per year members ( and visitors too) are invited to show us at least one of their favorite effects. Well, this Saturday at Ring 96 we will again present this opportunity to magicians.

This is a chance for you to share some of your special magic with others in the Ring. In the past, we have seen some great magic Remember, this is not Show & Tell. You will not be asked to share your secret(s) tonight.

The second part of the evening is Trade Night. You may bring some thing to trade. This can be a book, DVD, trick or any other prop you have stored away and not using.

February ReportBill Pearce gave a

moving tribute on the recent death of Aldo Columbini.

Chad Scott had his second reading on his way to Ring 96 membership. After an absence of many years Jim Militello initiated reinstatement to Ring 96.

President Bill Hunter concluded the business portion of our meeting and we shortly began the evening’s program which was a lecture by Jon Armstrong.

There were thirty-one enthusiastic members and guest for his lecture. Many of us were well aware of the outstanding magic

that Jon performs. He started his lecture by telling us that although he has often heard that lay people don’t really like card tricks ( at least not multiple card tricks) that is not his personal experience. He believes that that people in general and magicians specifically do not like “bad” card tricks but respond quite well to tricks that entertain. The key word is “entertainment”. Cards tricks presented as a puzzle to be figured out by audience members may be clever but they most certainly do not offer entertainment value to most people.

Jon did not limit his lecture to only card trick but spent a considerable time providing information as basic as how to have a spectator select a card for maximum effect. He interjected tips like this throughout his entire lecture, which affirmed why Jon is considered a master card magician. He let us know that he made a decision early in his career to study and devote a good part of his life to learning as much as he could about card magic. It be evident that his work paid off for him.

He went on to perform a variety of magic effects for us which focused mostly on card magic but not exclusively. Chris Fleming ably assisted him with most of the effects. Jon is well known for tricks he performs with what he calls his “Educated Tiny Plunger”. He was able to keep our interest with the tiny plunger and most importantly, kept us completely entertained.

Later in the evening he performed an effect he attributed to Fawcett Ross called Follow the Leader. Jon mentioned he made modifications to the effect, such as using two Spot Light Close-up pads, one red and one black. Amazingly, as Jon dealt out the cards, all the red cards ended on the red pad and all the black cards on the black pad. It was visual, it was unbelievable and it was extremely entertaining.

It was a great lecture and Jon got the applause he deserved when he finished.
