The Cause1,000 Cranes Fundraising InitiativeIn Japanese culture, cranes are seen as symbols of longevity, good luck, happiness, love and fi delity. It has become a popular subject of origami with the myth that folding 1,000 origami cranes will make a wish you make come true.

At Tonari Gumi we have over 300 volunteers whose spirit embody that of the crane. Their hands are like the wings of the cranes – protecting, caring for and bringing happiness to the lives our Japanese Canadian and new immigrant seniors.

Our volunteers and staff have been reaching out to help our seniors remain independent and healthy since 1974. For decades, Japanese Canadians and new immigrant seniors have come to rely on Tonari Gumi as a home-away-from home, a place to meet friends, and a place to fi nd support.

Thanks to the funds earned through events such as Spirits of Japan, Tonari Gumi is able to provide services in both Japanese and English to the homebound and those experiencing early stages of dementia, to deliver Japanese meals-on-wheels, to visit those who are isolated and alone in various seniors facilities, to assist those experiencing elder abuse and to help those marginalized due to language and culture.

Your Sponsorship will help:• Do something to help our seniors now • Link your name and company with the many hundreds who are working together to build a more caring and supportive community.

Children around the world know the story of Sadako Sasaki, a 12-year-old in Japan with the goal of folding 1,000 cranes in her hospital in hope of surviving radiation sickness, resulting from exposure to radiation from the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in August, 1945. After folding 644 cranes, she passed away on October 25, 1955. In her honour, her classmates folded the remaining cranes.
